Band’s latest seems haunted by their seminal Pinkerton album, in Bigger Than the Sound. By James Montgomery The cover of Weezer’s Hurley Photo: Epitaph There is a moment right near the beginning of Weezer ‘s umpteenth album Hurley when Rivers Cuomo declares: “I’m not kidding anymore.” It’s a fairly loaded statement, considering he’s spent much of the past decade doing what could charitably be described as “joking around,” releasing a string of albums each a little more confounding (and a little less satisfying) than the last. To wit: The last truly solid Weezer album (the so-called Green one) was released nearly four months before 9/11, and since then, Cuomo and company have gone progressively further off the rails. Maladroit featured just two songs that cracked the three-minute mark, and even then it felt too long and convoluted (mostly because Cuomo spends a portion of it taking thinly veiled jabs at his fanbase). Make Believe saw Cuomo unsheathe his arena-rock dreams, which is how we ended up with the talk-box solo on “Beverly Hills.” 2008’s Red Album is probably best known for its cover (on which Cuomo sports a cowboy hat and mustache) and the part where MC Rivers gets busy on the mic. Raditude is most notable for the dog on the cover, the bizarre fascination with partying and the Lil Wayne cameo. It’s been a rather grizzly stretch, and one couldn’t be blamed for thinking that perhaps Cuomo had embarked on some Kaufman-esque anti-comedy spree, mostly because the jokes he was telling were all pretty bad. And while it may seem unfair to rehash the past, there are two reasons I’m doing it here. First, when you’re talking about a band with a star-crossed history like Weezer’s, discussing history is sort of inevitable. It informs every opinion you have about them, for better or worse. And second, because on many levels, Hurley (which drops September 14) is about nothing but the past. It is a very backward-looking thing, full of nostalgia and worry and the kind of itchy buzz that once powered this band. And therein lies the charm. Of course, there’s the first single, “Memories,” which Cuomo himself said would appeal to fans of Weezer’s “super-raw, emotional stuff” (i.e. Pinkerton ) and is full of lines that recall the halcyon days “when Audioslave was still Rage” and the band’s blurry, pre-hiatus period, when journalists prodded and the band “didn’t know what we were doing half of the time.” There’s the whinging guitar work and harmonies of “Ruling Me,” which make it sound very much like a Blue Album B-side. “Unspoken” is, in its best moments, like a really killer demo from one of Cuomo’s Alone albums. And, really, the entire concept of “Smart Girls” — Cuomo awkwardly pining for untouchable beauties (untouchable, in this instance, because they only exist on Twitter) — is what drove the entirety of Pinkerton, when you think about it. And sonically, the majority of Hurley seems haunted by that album. Guitars growl and grow acne, Cuomo pushes his voice to the verge of cracking, and even during its prettier moments — the chiming bells that kick off “Trainwrecks,” the distant piano that opens “Run Away” — there’s a gawky undercurrent to the proceedings. Of course, all that awkwardness does lead to some rather unfortunate moments, most notably on “Where’s My Sex?” which goes over about as well as a song in which a 40-year-old man uses socks as a metaphor for coitus could be expected to, and the aforementioned “Smart Girls,” which sorta recalls the Beatles’ “Back in the U.S.S.R.” if Paul McCartney had bad posture and spent his days tweeting. Overall, though, Hurley succeeds because it’s the record on which Cuomo decides to stop kidding around and tries to recapture some of his old magic. It’s not a perfect album, but it’s certainly better than anything they’ve done in a long, long time. Anyone can have a bad decade, but the past is the past. Unless, of course, the goal is to make history repeat itself. And that’s OK too. Are you excited that Hurley conjures up memories of Pinkerton ? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Weezer

‘At this moment in our career, it feels like we don’t need a major label,’ frontman Rivers Cuomo tells Rolling Stone. By Gil Kaufman Weezer’s Rivers Cuomo Photo: Tim Mosenfelder/ Getty Images Last time around, Weezer went all in on the modern pop game, larding tracks on 2009’s Raditude with guest spots from Lil Wayne and production and writing help from the All-American Rejects, Dr. Luke and Butch Walker. But for their upcoming (September 14) debut for punk stalwart label Epitaph Records, Hurley (alas, not Heavy Mental ), Rivers Cuomo and company are dialing things all the way back to the 1960s. According to Rolling Stone magazine, the band’s eighth studio album is nearly finished and it will have a much different sound than their previous effort. “At this moment in our career, it feels like we don’t need a major label, and the major label culture isn’t inline with our values,” Cuomo said, explaining the switch from the Universal/Interscope label group, where they’d spent almost their entire career. “We like [Epitaph head] Brett Gurewitz and it feels like a smaller and more appropriate operation for what we like doing at the moment.” What they’re doing includes hooking up with notoriously prolific songwriter Ryan Adams and country legend Mac Davis, best known for writing the Elvis hit “In the Ghetto.” Davis was recommended by a mutual friend, and singer Cuomo said they worked on a song called “Time Flies,” which he described as a “classic ’60s pop song with huge crunchy guitars.” As for working with Adams, Cuomo recently told MTV News that the song they collaborated on is inspiring. “It’s a very stirring and emotional and powerful Weezer song,” he said. “He was really inspiring to work with. … He has a lot of wild and crazy energy. It’s gonna be on the Weezer record. He plays lead guitar on it, but it will be on the Weezer record, for sure.” With the hip-hop and teen pop flavors of Raditude pushed to the side, Cuomo said Hurley will instead focus on 1960s-inspired pop songs such as the first single, “Memories,” and the tracks “Ruling Me” and “Hang On,” which he described as sounding like “Frankie Valli but mixed with Metallica guitars.” There is, however, one song that has a thoroughly modern inspiration. “Smart Girls” is an homage to all the young ladies who have been hitting up the married frontman on Twitter lately. “I was really getting into Twitter a year ago, and suddenly there were all these really hot girls that were hitting me on Twitter,” said Cuomo. “I was like, ‘Where’d all these hot girls come from now that I’m totally married?’ ” He compared the song to the Beatles’ “Back in the U.S.S.R.” in that it sounds like someone writing a “cheesy Beach Boys type of song.” The band recently started mixing the album, which should be completed within the next two weeks. What do you think about Weezer going with a ’60s sound for their new album? Tell us in the comments. Related Artists Weezer

Soccer super-fan predicts U.S. will beat Algeria to advance to the next round. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Sasha Hamrogue Rivers Cuomo Photo: Bryan Bedder/ Getty Images Weezer frontman Rivers Cuomo grew up a soccer fan , and his support for the U.S. men’s team is already well-documented. That’s why, though he’d previously written an anthem for the 2006 World Cup team — a group that rather famously underachieved — he decided to pen another one for the 2010 squad. Because this time, things were different. “I tried to make a soccer anthem back in 2006, but it was right after we got knocked out [of the World Cup] in pretty humiliating fashion in the first round, so it came out really kind of sad,” Cuomo told MTV Radio. “And this time around, I was just feeling super optimistic and kind of badass after our performance in the Confederations Cup last year, and especially around this player [Clint] Dempsey, who seems to have this badass attitude and ability to step up and put the ball in the back of the net, even when we’re playing against the giants. So I wrote a song, which hopefully captures some of that confidence and swagger in the face of pretty daunting odds.” The song he ended up writing — the fist-pumping “Represent,” which premiered last week on Weezer’s A.P.E Radio station — most certainly captures that swag. Shoot, in some small way, it probably helped the U.S. team battle to a tie with heavily favored England in its opening match. “After we premiered it, I heard from the U.S. soccer Twitter,” he beamed. “They tweeted at me and said they downloaded the song and put it in the playlist for the pre-game listen, before the U.S./England match.” With that match — and a hard-fought draw with Slovenia — behind them, the U.S. team now stands on the precipice of advancing to the knockout stage of the World Cup, a place the haven’t been since 2002. All they need to do is beat Algeria on Wednesday morning (if they tie, there are a host of other scenarios in which they can still advance, most of which involve stuff like goal differentials ). And, though he’s not exactly the cocky sort, if pressed, Cuomo believes that the U.S. team won’t need to worry about differentials or tiebreakers. The way he sees it, they’ll beat Algeria outright. “I’m not good at making predictions, because you never know what’s going to happen; anything can happen in soccer,” he laughed. “But I guess if I had to bet, I’d say the U.S. is going to win 2-0 and advance to the next round.” What do you think of Rivers’ prediction and his World Cup anthem?
