Exclusive: Adam Sandler’s ‘That’s My Boy’ Trailer Debuts

Sandler is ‘off the rails and cursing every other word’ in new red-band trailer, co-star Andy Samberg teases. By Josh Wigler Adam Sandler in “That’s My Boy” Photo: Columbia Pictures Most movies about long-lost fathers reconnecting with their estranged sons don’t include overweight strippers launching fruit from their you-know-wheres. Then again, most of these movies are not “That’s My Boy,” the new comedy from Adam Sandler and Andy Samberg hitting theaters in June. MTV News has your exclusive first look at the NSFW red-band trailer for “That’s My Boy,” and if there’s one major takeaway, it’s this: There is no sign of the family-friendly, PG-safe Adam Sandler in sight. “It’s a hard R, which is extremely exciting, just in the fact that I don’t know that Sandler has ever done a hard R before, not with Happy Madison,” Samberg told MTV News in an exclusive interview. “The cut that I saw, which I loved, is what I thought the movie was going to be: the Happy Madison sensibility with a much edgier R-rating.” Indeed, we’d say that ending the trailer with a wedding dress covered in vomit and other bodily fluids fits the bill Samberg’s talking about. And if the Lonely Island frontman can be taken at his word, we still haven’t seen anything yet. “Sandler was having a lot of fun, doing stuff he hasn’t done since, really, his early albums, which is when I first became obsessed with him,” the “Saturday Night Live” performer said. “It’s certainly classic Sandler. He’s doing a Boston accent the whole movie; he’s off the rails, cursing every other word. We were dying the whole time we were shooting.” Part of the reason Samberg’s so excited to have been a part of “That’s My Boy” is his longtime status as a Sandler fan. “I’ve been joking that I’ve been carrying around this face my entire life, basically leading up to this moment where somebody says, ‘Hey, there’s this movie where someone has to play Adam Sandler’s kid, but he’s closer in age to Sandler than a normal kid would be,’ ” he laughed. “As soon as I read the script, I knew I wanted to do it. It sat for a while, but right around last fall, I heard that they were maybe thinking of doing it again. I told Sandler I’d love to do it, and he said, ‘We’ll see if we do it!’ And we did it! It was the happiest call.” “That’s My Boy” hits theaters June 15. For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Andy Samberg ‘Psyched’ To Be Adam Sandler’s Son

Trailer for ‘That’s My Boy,’ starring the ‘SNL’ duo, debuts Thursday on MTV.com. By Josh Wigler Andy Samberg and Adam Sandler in “That’s My Boy” Photo: Columbia Pictures Peanut butter and jelly, popcorn and movies, baseball and springtime — all winning combinations that never fail to put a smile on your face. On June 15, 2012, you’ll be able to add another prized combo to that list: Adam Sandler and Andy Samberg. The two “Saturday Night Live” legends are joining forces for a new Happy Madison comedy called “That’s My Boy,” hitting theaters this June. In the film, Sandler stars as a down-on-his luck man trying to reconnect with his estranged family on the week of his son’s (Samberg) wedding. It’s a bizarre setup — after all, Sandler is only 12 years older than Samberg in real life — but, as one would hope, the film offers a reliably ridiculous explanation for the small age gap. If the basic premise and the involvement of actors Sandler and Samberg don’t have you fired up for “That’s My Boy,” just wait: The first official trailer is set to drop on MTV.com on Thursday, and Samberg himself couldn’t be more excited for it. “I never thought I would actually get to be in a movie with Sandler, certainly not playing his son,” Samberg told MTV News ahead of the trailer’s release. “For me, I’ve been such a huge fan of his for so long; I used to listen to ‘Billy Madison’ on audio cassette in my Walkman. I’m a real-deal Sandler fan. I’d definitely put [this experience] up there with being cast on ‘SNL’ or any of the other things I’ve gotten to do — making [Lonely Island] records with my buddies — things I’ve always dreamed of happening but never thought they would. I’m pretty psyched.” As a self-declared “real-deal Sandler fan,” Samberg was far from disappointed when it came to watching the comedy legend do his thing on the “That’s My Boy” set. “Sandler is basically on fire in this movie,” he said. “In real life, he’s about the sweetest dad I’ve ever seen. But in the movie, he’s a bit of a train wreck. If we were making a documentary, it would be called ‘Sweet Loving Dad.’ But I think [‘That’s My Boy’] is going to be a little bit more entertaining and edgy than that.” Stay tuned to MTV News on Thursday for the “That’s My Boy” trailer premiere! And You Thought The Candy Land Movie Couldn’t Get Any Better…

… and by better I mean worse, and by worse I mean now that the licensing deal between Universal and toy company Hasbro has ended, Sony has snatched up the Candy Land board game movie project — you know, the one like ” Lord of The Rings , but set in a world of candy” — as a vehicle for none other than Adam Sandler . Said Columbia prez Doug Belgrad: ” Candy Land is more than just a game. It is a brand that children, parents and grandparents know and love. The world of Candy Land offers an extraordinary canvas upon which to create a fantastical, live-action family adventure film with a larger than life part for Adam. We are thrilled to partner with Hasbro and Happy Madison on this project.” [ THR ]

Weezer’s Hurley: Get Back To The Good Life

Band’s latest seems haunted by their seminal Pinkerton album, in Bigger Than the Sound. By James Montgomery The cover of Weezer’s Hurley Photo: Epitaph There is a moment right near the beginning of Weezer ‘s umpteenth album Hurley when Rivers Cuomo declares: “I’m not kidding anymore.” It’s a fairly loaded statement, considering he’s spent much of the past decade doing what could charitably be described as “joking around,” releasing a string of albums each a little more confounding (and a little less satisfying) than the last. To wit: The last truly solid Weezer album (the so-called Green one) was released nearly four months before 9/11, and since then, Cuomo and company have gone progressively further off the rails. Maladroit featured just two songs that cracked the three-minute mark, and even then it felt too long and convoluted (mostly because Cuomo spends a portion of it taking thinly veiled jabs at his fanbase). Make Believe saw Cuomo unsheathe his arena-rock dreams, which is how we ended up with the talk-box solo on “Beverly Hills.” 2008’s Red Album is probably best known for its cover (on which Cuomo sports a cowboy hat and mustache) and the part where MC Rivers gets busy on the mic. Raditude is most notable for the dog on the cover, the bizarre fascination with partying and the Lil Wayne cameo. It’s been a rather grizzly stretch, and one couldn’t be blamed for thinking that perhaps Cuomo had embarked on some Kaufman-esque anti-comedy spree, mostly because the jokes he was telling were all pretty bad. And while it may seem unfair to rehash the past, there are two reasons I’m doing it here. First, when you’re talking about a band with a star-crossed history like Weezer’s, discussing history is sort of inevitable. It informs every opinion you have about them, for better or worse. And second, because on many levels, Hurley (which drops September 14) is about nothing but the past. It is a very backward-looking thing, full of nostalgia and worry and the kind of itchy buzz that once powered this band. And therein lies the charm. Of course, there’s the first single, “Memories,” which Cuomo himself said would appeal to fans of Weezer’s “super-raw, emotional stuff” (i.e. Pinkerton ) and is full of lines that recall the halcyon days “when Audioslave was still Rage” and the band’s blurry, pre-hiatus period, when journalists prodded and the band “didn’t know what we were doing half of the time.” There’s the whinging guitar work and harmonies of “Ruling Me,” which make it sound very much like a Blue Album B-side. “Unspoken” is, in its best moments, like a really killer demo from one of Cuomo’s Alone albums. And, really, the entire concept of “Smart Girls” — Cuomo awkwardly pining for untouchable beauties (untouchable, in this instance, because they only exist on Twitter) — is what drove the entirety of Pinkerton, when you think about it. And sonically, the majority of Hurley seems haunted by that album. Guitars growl and grow acne, Cuomo pushes his voice to the verge of cracking, and even during its prettier moments — the chiming bells that kick off “Trainwrecks,” the distant piano that opens “Run Away” — there’s a gawky undercurrent to the proceedings. Of course, all that awkwardness does lead to some rather unfortunate moments, most notably on “Where’s My Sex?” which goes over about as well as a song in which a 40-year-old man uses socks as a metaphor for coitus could be expected to, and the aforementioned “Smart Girls,” which sorta recalls the Beatles’ “Back in the U.S.S.R.” if Paul McCartney had bad posture and spent his days tweeting. Overall, though, Hurley succeeds because it’s the record on which Cuomo decides to stop kidding around and tries to recapture some of his old magic. It’s not a perfect album, but it’s certainly better than anything they’ve done in a long, long time. Anyone can have a bad decade, but the past is the past. Unless, of course, the goal is to make history repeat itself. And that’s OK too. Are you excited that Hurley conjures up memories of Pinkerton ? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Weezer

Katie Holmes In Talks For Adam Sandler’s ‘Jack And Jill’ Cast

Sandler plays both title roles in the film; Holmes would play Jack’s wife. By Adam Rosenberg Katie Holmes Photo: Soul Brother/ Getty Images Adam Sandler plays both of the title roles in his upcoming comedy “Jack and Jill,” but he’s making room for one more: Katie Holmes. The “Batman Begins” star is in talks to join the cast as Sandler’s wife, The Hollywood Reporter reveals. The Thanksgiving-set story centers on Jack (Sandler), a family man whose twin sister (also Sandler) pays a holiday visit and then doesn’t leave. In a bizarre twist, the movie also stars Al Pacino … as himself. “Jack and Jill” will be directed by Dennis Dugan, a longtime Sandler cohort. He most recently directed the former “Saturday Night Live” comic in “Grown-Ups,” “You Don’t Mess With the Zohan” and “I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry” but their relationship extends as far back as “Happy Gilmore.” The story comes from an idea and a script from Ben Zook, and Robert Smigel and Steve Koren have both done work on it as well. Sandler is producing the film with his “Happy Madison” partners Jack Giarraputo with Todd Garner. Holmes has led a pretty low-key existence since her 2005 roles in “Batman Begins” and “Thank You for Smoking.” She starred in the 2008 indie comedy “Mad Money” and appeared in one episode of the short-lived sitcom “Eli Stone” that same year. She also has a pair of 2010 indies in her corner: the Kevin Kline/ Paul Dano-starring comedy “The Extra Man,” which was released earlier this summer, and the ensemble drama “The Romantics,” which arrives in September. Holmes has a busy year ahead of her though. In addition to “Jack and Jill,” which is expected to be released next year, she also stars in Guillermo del Toro’s horror remake “Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark” and the upcoming miniseries “The Kennedys,” in which she plays Jackie Kennedy. Holmes is also set for director Dito Montiel’s “Fighting” follow-up, the crime thriller “The Son of No One.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .
