‘2012’ Checklist: 18 Things You’ll Need if the Movie Got Doomsday Right

Depending on your conspiracy theory of choice, the world may end 11 months and change from now, give or take a few days. And just in case all of those qualified real scientists are wrong about the 2012 doomsday being complete hooey, we’ve got filmmaker Roland Emmerich ’s 2009 opus 2012 on hand to guide us for the potential cataclysm ahead. So grab a notepad and jot down the 18 or so essentials you’ll need to start stockpiling if you’re going to be ready to face down ultimate destruction, John Cusack -style. The fictional 2012 opens as the Earth’s core is being heated by a freak solar flare, which accelerates a shifting of the Earth’s crust. The resulting shift triggers earthquakes and tsunamis across the globe, leaving humanity’s only hope in a series of massive arks constructed to hold survivors… just not everyone. But them’s the breaks. Look, none of us know if we’ll make it onto greedy Oliver Platt’s ginormous boat, so it’s best to come prepared. 1. Emergency kit with the essentials – water, non-perishables, batteries, a radio, perhaps a few magazines for light reading 2. Early investments in steel and titanium interests 3. Decent relationships with your baby mama/daddy 4. A Mayan calendar 5. Disaster insurance 6. Beer 7. A limo with tires with good traction for outrunning earthquakes, family in tow 8. Advanced degree(s) in geology, astrophysics, or international relations 9. Mace for keeping the weirdo pirate radio jock you meet in the woods at arm’s length 10. A private airplane to fly your family to China as America crumbles into the sea 11. Flying lessons 12. Small fortune for buying your way onto life-saving arks at one billion euros a ticket, or 13. High level government clearance assuring privilege of being saved (also works in case of Contagion ) 14. Mountaintop real estate in Africa 15. A houseboat 16. Camping gear 17. A submarine or two 18. Swimming lessons, if all else fails Your mileage may vary with the above, but remember what’s really important in times of crisis as we wait to see if Emmerich was the mystical sage I’d like to think of him as: Family. And not wetting the bed. And also looking cool while evading lava and earthquakes and tsunamis. Let’s circle back on 12/21/12 and see where we’re at. Like the Boy Scouts say, be prepared…

This Week: Follow Stephanie Zacharek on Slate’s Movie Club!

The annual critical powwow that is Slate’s Movie Club is currently underway, with that site’s Dana Stevens leading a conversation between a redoubtable quartet also including Michael Phillips, Dan Kois and Movieline’s own Stephanie Zacharek. What’s on the agenda? To date, topics discussed include:

David Cronenberg, Michael Fassbender Bring Their Dangerous Method to NYFF

How does Keira Knightley devour so much scenery in A Dangerous Method yet stay so thin? That was the big question Tuesday at Lincoln Center, where her director David Cronenberg and co-star Michael Fassbender dropped by to meet the press ahead of tonight’s New York Film Festival premiere of Method .

Bad Movies We Love: Australia

Real Steel calls upon Hugh Jackman’s ability to tame and train robots, but this isn’t his first time at the robo-dome. He first conquered a borg named Nicole Kidman in Baz Luhrmann’s failed epic Australia . Ha! Now, now, that’s the first and last Nicole Kidman joke you’ll hear from me because 1) Nicole Kidman is awesome, 2) Rabbit Hole is under-appreciated, and 3) BORGS ARE VINDICTIVE. Let’s reinspect the joys of this looooong movie without ever caring about the story!

Jordana Brewster on Fast Five, Maturing Onscreen and the Chance of a Sixth Fast & Furious Film

Last week, Movieline spoke with with Fast Five star Tyrese Gibson to get the male perspective on being part of such a lucrative, testosterone-driven franchise. Eager to get another take, we reached out to Jordana Brewster, who has played the sole heroine of the car heist series since day one. The Yale graduate eagerly discussed her growing role in Fast Five (which is released on DVD and Blu-ray this week), a potential sixth installment and her own meager knowledge of automobiles.

Kevin Spacey Searches for the Next Big Thing in First Trailer for Father of Invention

If there’s one simple request I have of Kevin Spacey, it’s that he take one movie off from wearing a suit. Mix it up! Grow your hair out! Wear schlubby clothes! Don’t always be so Kevin Spacey-esque, Kevin Spacey, because it’s become a thing and we’re all tired of it. Which is why the new trailer for the indie comedy Father of Invention seems a step in the right direction. Long prison beard and an everyman’s sense of humility? Bring it on, Spaceman.

Fast Five Director Justin Lin Already Has 12 Minutes of Fast Six in the Can

Director Justin Lin had no idea how well his supercharged sequel Fast Five would go on to perform back when he was filming it — but he prepped, shot, and cut a 12-minute sequence for a sixth Fast & Furious film (his next upcoming production) just in case: “I already have a 12-minute sequence done. I did it just as an exercise. I had it done before we were finished with Fast Five , actually. So I wanted to do that just to have it there and to be honest with you, I didn’t know if I was going to do a Fast Six . I didn’t know if people were going to embrace Fast Five and we were going to have an opportunity. But I felt like I really wanted to make sure that the last scene, which I had talked to Vin [Diesel] about countless times — I wanted to make sure that was done.” [ Box Office Magazine ]

Lumet was remembered at the Los Angeles Film Festival this week, and if you didn’t get a chance to participate in that event, Movieline is here to provide a sounding board. In honor of what would have been Lumet’s birthday, celebrate the director’s career ahead.

Weekend Receipts: Fast Five Zooms to Record Opening

Yowza. Fast Five exceeded all projections this weekend with a stunning $83.6 million opening — the best ever for a Universal release, and a nearly 18 percent jump over the debut haul of its 2009 predecessor Fast and Furious . Its competition, meanwhile — including a pair of new, badly underperforming family films — was left behind like so much roadkill. Your weekend receipts are here.
