Now here’s a biopic I can get excited about: Blaxploitation icon Pam Grier is set to see her 2010 autobiography Foxy, My Life in Three Acts , adapted for the screen with Fresh Prince of Bel-Air / Living Single TV vet Eunetta Boone to script. Grier’s story is full of sensational events — just imagine that one Richard Pryor story , reenacted — but also marks a turning point in the portrayal of strong, sexually-empowered women in Hollywood. That said, what young actresses out there can fill Grier’s foxy shoes? I’m curious to see which actresses can even resemble Grier’s legendary physique and unusual features, let alone nail that combination of toughness and vulnerability that made her B-movie heroines so intriguing. Last year Grier spoke with Movieline about her career, her formative pre-fame years, the childhood trauma that made her who she was, and the semi-accidental foray into Hollywood that launched her trailblazing career. On the roots of the fearlessness that came to mark her onscreen persona: “It comes from my personal life. It comes from me experiencing very tragic circumstances when I was six and again at 19, and again at 21, where I finally felt I had to survive, I had to live through these circumstances. That gave me confidence. I fight a little harder, I challenge people… there are things that happened to me personally that I bring to the screen. But also, I wanted to show other women that they, too, won’t lose their femininity or castrate their men by being assertive. It’s okay to be confident… if you’re right. On her first screen credit: “It’s Beyond the Valley of the Dolls ! I went to the set to visit a friend; I was a starving student working six jobs, and I just kind of went with him and the next thing I know they say, ‘Hey, we need more extras!’ They said, ‘We’ll put you in a dress, and you’ll say something.’ That was my first credit. It was Russ Meyer and Beyond the Valley of the Dolls , and I wasn’t even union. I was like, ‘Well, okay.’ I had no intention of being an actor.” On her initial Hollywood aspirations: “I still haven’t been convinced. [Pauses] Just kidding! At the time I wanted to be a camera person. I didn’t feel like I was attractive enough, with the glamour you see on television and the images that were portrayed. And I was a revolutionary, I was into the Black Panthers, being independent, feeding your own, give them a pole they’ll learn how to feed themselves, and all of that. The womanly stuff was foreign to me. I came to Hollywood in a flannel shirt, Timberland boots, and Levis, with a big ‘fro in my family’s hunting jeep with no roof, no doors, no windows. They’d see me hiking up Sunset Plaza Boulevard, it’s a long winding road, because I was used to hiking in Colorado. They said, ‘No one in Los Angeles hikes! What are you, nuts?’ No, it’s just what I do. So I brought all of those differences, a different type of woman. They could dress me up, I clean up well. But that was my first credit. And I didn’t know what I was saying. I didn’t know anything of what to do.” Read the full interview here .

We’ve lost another brother way too soon… Comedian Patrice O’Neal died last night after a long battle with diabetes, having never recovered from a stroke last month that reportedly left him unable to move or speak. Talk show host Opie of the Opie & Anthony Radio Show tweeted this morning, “Yes, it’s true that our pal Patrice O’Neal has passed away. The funniest and best thinker I’ve ever known PERIOD.” O’Neal suffered a stroke in October after a long battle with diabetes. The announcement about his condition was made by a group of his comedian friends and peers on the popular Sirius radio show, but few details have been made known since then at the wishes of his family. O’Neal was best known for his darkly playful sense of humor and for saying exactly what was on his mind. While O’Neal was polarizing voice who was often as disliked as much as he was beloved, he was revered by peers and audiences alike for his fearlessness, a characteristic that was in bold relief during the Sheen Roast. So sad… But we have got to do better, people.

Celebrity fans including former ‘NSYNC singer JC Chasez, tourmate DJ Pauly D and more weigh in on why Brit is still on top. By Jocelyn Vena Britney Spears with Lady Gaga as Jo Calderone at the 2011 VMAs Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images At the 2011 Video Music Awards , Lady Gaga’s alter ego Jo Calderone presented Britney Spears with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award by telling the audience that Spears “taught us all how to be fearless.” And that fearlessness was honored with a dance-heavy tribute to the pop star. Brit’s ever-growing legacy is the reason why she was so deserving of the special award, her celebrity fans and members of her inner circle told MTV News. “She never lets you down,” her longtime choreographer Brian Friedman told MTV News on the VMA black carpet on Sunday night. “She’s definitely not dull. There’s always something crazy coming around the next turn. I think it’s a mix between music, which is always incredible, the dance performance you see on the stage, the iconic videos, the fashion, and then the fact that she can’t be knocked down.” We spotted Kanye West, Lady Gaga, Britney Spears and more hanging out backstage! Those sentiments were mirrored by her pal and former ‘NSYNC member JC Chasez, who noted that even at 30, “She’s actually been around long enough [to have a tribute]. She has a body of work to pull from.” Spears’ former tourmate, DJ Pauly D , also gushed about the singer, who won Best Pop Video for “Till The World Ends.” Find out how Beyonc

Creative director Laurieann Gibson takes MTV News behind Gaga’s ‘performance art.’ By Jocelyn Vena Lady Gaga performs at the 2011 VMAs Photo: Getty Images When Lady Gaga showed up at the 2011 Video Music Awards , she wasn’t Lady Gaga anymore; she was Jo Calderone. Gaga’s creative director, Laurieann Gibson, spoke to MTV News days before the show went live, and she explained why Gaga wanted to stay in character all night long. “The idea of her being a performance artist — and it’s starting the performance on the red carpet and the idea that the performance never ends for her — is the first time I’ve experienced this with an artist,” she said. “I love it. That’s something that is specific to her, and the whole night was the performance, and it was important that Jo was a part of the whole night.” Gaga — or, rather, Calderone — opened the show with a lengthy monologue before launching into Gaga’s “Yo

Laurieann Gibson calls opening performance an opportunity to ‘create a new understanding of music.’ By Kelley L. Carter, with reporting by Christina Garibaldi Lady Gaga Photo: Getty Images So much for giving up the goods. We really tried to get Laurieann Gibson, Lady Gaga’s creative director , to spill her guts about what Mother Monster has planned for her VMA performance on Sunday, but she’s keeping things under wraps — in the best way possible. She jokingly said a few censored (and, considering how much she’s bleeped in the embedded video, obscene) things about what viewers will see. Long story short: She’s not telling. But Gibson did say of Gaga’s opening performance, “I hope that people take the fearlessness away. The notion that you don’t have to follow what is popular and that you can constantly take the opportunity and create a new understanding of music and performing. “It could mean standing under one spotlight,” she continued. “It could mean tons of camels and belly-dancing girls. I don’t know. One is not necessarily better than the other. But it is about the artist. It’s about ‘Who’s the artist?’ So in that one moment, you have to take it and give it all you can.” Gibson is just following suit on the secrecy front: When Gaga talked to MTV News last week, she said she wants to surprise her fans at the VMAs. “I’m really very honored and excited to open the show,” Lady Gaga told MTV News. “But I won’t reveal anything; I want it to be a surprise.” From what Gaga and Gibson revealed, the performance sounds like it will be avant garde, much like her 2009 VMA set, when Gaga took the stage for a blood-soaked “Paparazzi” performance . “It will be a continuation of everything I’ve been doing, and it will be exactly what they want,” Gaga said. “I’m pretty good at knowing what my fans want me to do.” The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live Sunday, August 28, from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT, following the Selena Gomez-hosted pre-show at 8. Clip gives fans an inside view of singer’s life on the road. By Jocelyn Vena Taylor Swift Photo: Noel Vasquez/ Getty Images Taylor Swift loves her fans, and she isn’t shy about giving props to those who have helped make her the award-winning superstar she is today. So it seems fitting that when she put together the video for her song “Fearless” she made sure to give her fans an inside view of what it’s like to go on tour with the pop star. “You guys, this tour has been the best experience of my entire life,” Swift tells her band before they step onstage. The video features behind-the-scenes footage of Swift and her band as they take her sold-out Fearless tour across the country. The video also features footage from the tour itself with fans excitedly showing off signs to the pop star. Although the song is a love letter to the perfect first date, the video is really Swift’s love letter to her fans. It ends with the singer waving goodbye to them as she makes her way off the stage. “I really thought about what that word [‘fearless’] means to me, and I guess, to me, fearless doesn’t mean you’re completely unafraid and it doesn’t mean that you’re bulletproof,” she told MTV News when the Fearless album dropped in late 2008. “It means that you have a lot of fears, but you jump anyway.” On the Web site for her record label, Big Machine Records , she explains what the song means to her. “This is a song about the fearlessness of falling in love. When I wrote ‘Fearless,’ I wasn’t dating anyone. I wasn’t even in the beginning stages of dating anybody. I really was all by myself out on tour and I got this idea for a song about the best first date,” she explained. “I think sometimes when you’re writing love songs, you don’t write them about what you’re going through at the moment, you write about what you wish you had. So this song is about the best first date I haven’t had yet.” Related Photos Star Gazing: Taylor Swift Related Artists Taylor Swift
