‘I Am A Gay Man, I Am A Gay Man, I Am A Gay Man’ Jussie Smollet Covers ‘Out’ Magazine

For your viewing pleasure… Jussie Smollett Covers ‘Out’ Jussie Smollett is a proud gay man and he’s speaking candidly on his sexuality. The “Empire” star recently sat down with “Out” magazine to speak on his journey into stardom and accolades since landing the role of Jamal. He also made a point to confirm ( once again ) that he’s indeed gay—who could possibly fall in love with a woman. He tells OUT: “I am a gay man with an extremely open heart,” he says, easy and assured until he’s asked to elaborate on what that means to him. “God, I’ve never had to talk about this, so I’m trying to find the words. If I had to label myself, I would label myself as a gay man. With that said, I believe that love is the only thing that matters, and I would hope that anybody would leave themselves open — not to gender, but to love. I would hope that people would not close themselves off from what could be if, lo and behold, you meet somebody that just sweeps you off your feet, and you just can’t do anything about it. If we truly believe that we are born this way, then why do we try to stifle the way we were born? If I fall in love down the road with a woman, I’m going to love that woman.” On his words being misconstrued: “I’m sure that those words will be misconstrued,” he says, because if there’s one thing he’s learned this year, it’s how easily that can happen. “But this is a conversation that deserves to be had, because we don’t all understand each other. You’re not going to tell me that loving someone is wrong. That does not mean that heterosexuality is not very real. It does not mean that bisexuality is not very real. It does not mean that homosexuality is not very real. They are all very real. But what I’m saying is, I am a gay man. I am a gay man. I am a gay man. I don’t know how many times I have to say that.” Good for him. What do YOU think about Jussie coming (back) out in “Out”??? Hit the flip for more photos. Michael Muller

Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream: The No-Concept Concept Album

Bigger Than the Sound wonders: Does Perry’s latest mark the death of the album? By James Montgomery Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream Photo: Capitol Records Conventional wisdom these days seems to hold that the album is dead, singles are the lifeblood of the music industry, and people prefer their music as bite-size chunks, in whatever bit rate available and on their phones whenever possible. This is conventional wisdom, of course, because it is probably true. Just look at the carnage on the Billboard albums chart for proof. It would seem that nobody buys albums anymore (unless they have Eminem’s name on them) and that we’re all just a few short years away from the complete extinction of the medium. That is not as farfetched as it might seem. In fact, it’s basically a certainty at this point. Still, perhaps you continue to believe in the power of the long-player, in the majesty of the deep cut. Perhaps you are holding out hope for the return of the 80-minute magnum opus or the darkened-room, double-disc experience. Who’s to say you are wrong? Well, I am. And so is Katy Perry. Because next Tuesday, she’ll release Teenage Dream, 44 minutes of shimmering, pitch-perfect pop music that may very well signify the end of the album as we know it. Sure, it will undoubtedly top the Billboard albums chart and will almost certainly go platinum many times over, but really, Dream is an album in theory only. There is a cover, and a track list and a lengthy list of songwriting credits attached to it, but those things all seem like formalities. This is a collection of singles, a Whitman’s sampler of pop tunes, with seemingly no thought given to cohesion or sequencing. It is a no-concept record; there are no through lines or plot points or so-called “album tracks.” You can listen to it in any order and have roughly the same experience. In fact, it’s almost better that way. This is perhaps the first album in history that lends itself to the shuffle function on your iPod, which is sort of ingenious when you think about it. And none of that is meant to suggest that Teenage Dream isn’t a genuinely rousing success (in parts, it definitely is), but rather, I mention it because it makes writing about Dream as an album rather pointless and unfair. Because as an album, it’s sort of a mess. Sequentially, it jumps from a sweeping ballad (“Firework”) to a song about dudes with big dongs (“Peacock”) to an angry breakup tune (“Circle the Drain”) to a sweetly voiced lament on lost love (“The One That Got Away”). It’s the kind of arranging only R. Kelly is crazy enough to try — check his 2007 album Double Up, on which he follows a song called “Sex Planet” with “Rise Up,” a tribute to those slain in the Virginia Tech shootings — and it’s jarring, to say the least. And then there’s the matter of Perry’s emotional range, which, on the album, seems limited to just two extremes: starry-eyed ing

T.I. Says He’s Basking In B.o.B’s Success

‘All the hard work is paying off,’ Tip says of his Grand Hustle artist and five-time VMA nominee. By Shaheem Reid T.I. and B.o.B Photo: Jamie McCarthy/ Getty Images T.I. says his camp has worked diligently, so it’s OK to celebrate now. On Monday in New York, the King of the South reflected on the success of his Grand Hustle roster member B.o.B. We all know about steadfast and patient. And Bobby Ray had to practice that virtue the past couple of years while he waited for the release of his debut LP. Everything has paid off though, as B.o.B scored two #1 hit singles, critical acclaim for his body of work and most recently, five VMA nominations. “I feel like right now, all the hard work is paying off,” Tip said about Bob. “This is what everybody has been working for. This is [why] we go late nights in the studio, early mornings in the studio. This is the reason we miss days out of our children’s lives — for moments like these. For me not to sit here, reap the benefits and take the pleasure as well as taking the moment to bask in the glory of the success of what we have accomplished … It’s necessary, very necessary.” B.o.B’s “Nothin’ on You” is nominated for a VMA in the Best Pop Category while “Airplanes” is up for four Moonmen: Best Male Video, Best Hip-Hop Video, Best Collaboration and Video of the Year. “It’s very special to me,” the B.o.B said earlier this month. I think it’s a lot more special than the success of the singles, because this reflects the work I’ve put in over the years and the word of mouth I’ve helped create. It’s definitely amazing. I’m trying to find the words to explain it, but I can’t. It’s inexplicable. I’m a real simple man, so, you know, I accept every gift with generosity and gratitude.” What do you think about how Tip supports his Grand Hustle artist B.o.B? Tell us in the comments! The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on September 12 at 9 p.m. ET. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for the winners in general categories, including Best New Artist, from now through September 12. Soulja Boy Starts, Wins Twitter Beef with Chris Brown

For whatever reason, Chris Brown and social media seem to breed hostility. Dude pieced out of Twitter last year after accusing Wal Mart of blackballing him. He’s since returned, but not without another minor flare-up. For some reason, he and Soulja Boy exchanged misspelled, sub-140 character barbs this week. Boasting two-plus million followers, Soulja Boy wrote : “#ListenBitch add @ChrisBrown & @BowWow followers together u still aint half way f**kin wit me lol” Snap . Not one to let a little friendly competition slide without taking the gloves off and trying to kick some a$$, Chris Brown replied “@souljaboytellem yall funny… lol.” But then he continued: Random Twitter feuds are the best. “@souljaboytellem and @bowwow what yall make in a show i make for an hour at an afterparty… jus sayin.” Wait, who dragged poor Bow Wow into this?! Soulja Boy then retaliated (and included Bow Wow once again) seemingly getting the last words: “#ListenBitch if my last tweet offended you then I won.” The Tweeting gauntlet was then thrown down: “lol @bowwow there you go. f**k bank accounts. f**k followers. let’s see who new album sell the most 1st week.” That sound you hear is of IT BEING ON. Soulja Boy has a new album out in July called The DeAndre Way , while Bow Wow has not yet set a release date for his latest effort. And as for Chris Brown? He’s begging fans to stay relevant . That says a lot.

Sri Lanka to Akon: Smack Dat Sexy Chick Somewhere Else!

Akon has postponed an April concert in Sri Lanka after the nation’s government said it planned to deny his visa this week. The problem? A certain “Sexy Chick.” Specifically, a sexy chick who’s feverishly shakin’ dat booty all up in a Buddha statue’s grill in the song of that name by David Guetta featuring Akon. Obviously. More than 200 protestors in the city of Colombo threw rocks at the offices of Capital Maharaja, Akon’s concert promoters, angrily reacting to the video Monday. The mob – some carrying signs that read “Stop Akon Now!!” – broke windows and hit cars parked near the building. Four employees were reportedly injured. “Sexy Chick,” the hit song Akon recorded for Dave Guetta’s One Love album, shows babes dancing all suggestively in front of this Buddha statue by a pool: Images like the screen cap above have “triggered a lot of disappointment among Buddhists all over the world,” a Sri Lankan government spokesman said. Online debate heated up as well. The “We Hate Akon” page on Facebook has more than 12,000 members. That’s both hilarious and sad at the same time. “I was not aware that the statue was even on the set of the video until now,” Akon said. “I would never desecrate anyone’s religion or religious beliefs.” More than 60 percent of Sri Lanka’s population is Buddhist, and “I myself am a spiritual man, so I can understand why they are offended,” Akon added. “But violence is never the answer and I am disheartened.” Akon gets spiritual in his “Sexy Chick” video . In case you’re unclear what song we’re talking about, and feel like getting it stuck in your head for 72 hours (you’re welcome!), it’s the one with this verse: She’s nothing like a girl you’ve ever seen before / Nothing you can compare to your neighborhood hoe I’m tryna find the words to describe this girl … Without being disrespectful! The way that booty movin I can’t take no more / Have to stop what i’m doin so I can pull up close I’m tryna find the words to describe this girl … Without being disrespectful!
