Friday Box Office: Muppets Chomp at Twilight’s Heels

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn might have held onto the #1 slot during the Thanksgiving frame, but holiday buzz lifted those plucky Muppets to a strong second place showing; with $24.7 million over three days, Jason Segel, Kermit, and Co. should ride the Rainbow Connection all the way to a very nice pile of green by weekend’s end. Meanwhile, Happy Feet Two continues to slide and Aardman Animation’s fellow wintry offering Arthur Christmas opened with a modest $4.5 million Friday. Martin Scorsese’s 3-D fall family flick Hugo , on the other hand, enjoyed a strong debut on a fraction of the screens. Maybe audiences weren’t quite ready to ring in the yuletide cheer?

Friday Box Office: Last Exorcism Is First At Box Office

As the summer shuffles slowly off this seasonal coil, audiences decided they’d most like to see Satan plonk his thorny throne atop the box office. Yes, The Last Exorcism ruled the roost, while the dapper gents from Takers took second place, with Sly, Julia and Will Ferrell bringing up the rear. Your Friday Box Office is here.

Friday Box Office: The Kid Stays in the Picture

Sweep the leg! For the first time this summer a movie actually exceeded expectations at the box office. The Karate Kid — which tracking had opening in the highs 20s/low 30s range — grossed $19 million on Friday alone and could wind up with upwards of $52 million by Sunday night. Will Smith is so famous that even his kid can front a blockbuster. The other ’80s nostalgia piece of the weekend, The A-Team , detonated $9.5 million on Friday and should hit just under $27 million for the three days, good for second place. Is that disappointing? Slightly. But not really considering expectations were in that range. Let’s just say the plan sorta came together and leave it at that. The top-five after the jump.
