Ryan Gosling Drives Away With Three MTV Movie Award Noms

The actor’s busy 2011 could earn him a trio of Golden Popcorn statuettes. By Amy Wilkinson Ryan Gosling in “Drive” Photo: Bold Films In between brokering peace in New York’s East Village , suffering a snub at the hands of the People ‘s Sexiest Man Alive nomination committee and giggling over his own Internet meme , Ryan Gosling somehow found time to release three well-received films in 2011. So it should come as no surprise that the actor acquired a number of nods Monday when the 2012 MTV Movie Awards nominations were announced. The 31-year-old racked up three nominations: Best Male Performance and Best Gut-Wrenching Performance for the action flick “Drive” and Best Kiss (along with co-star Emma Stone) for the romantic comedy “Crazy, Stupid, Love.” Gosling’s other 2011 film, “The Ides of March,” was not nominated. Gosling is no stranger to MTV’s Golden Popcorn, having won a statuette in 2005 for Best Kiss with his “Notebook” co-star (and former girlfriend) Rachel McAdams. Their onstage re-creation of the smoldering smooch is still one of the Movie Award ceremony’s most memorable moments. This year, however, Gosling and Best Kiss co-nominee Stone face stiff competition in the form of “Twilight” lovebirds Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson, who’ve won the honor three years running. Elsewhere, Gosling will face Bryce Dallas Howard (“The Help”), Channing Tatum and Rob Riggle (“21 Jump Street”), Tom Cruise (“Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol”), and the women of “Bridesmaids” for Best Gut-Wrenching Performance, while Daniel Radcliffe (“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2”), Joseph Gordon-Levitt (“50/50”), Josh Hutcherson (“The Hunger Games”) and Channing Tatum (“The Vow”) will be his competition for Best Male Performance. Weekend Receipts: Think Like a Man Thinks Like a Champ

After nearly a month in first place, The Hunger Games surrendered its banner to another big-league bestseller-adaptation — and not the one that you (or I, for that matter) were expecting. Your eye-opening Weekend Receipts are here. 1. Think Like a Man Gross: $33,000,000 (new) Screens: 2,015 (PSA $16,377) Weeks: 1 Author Steve Harvey’s comic self-help literary phenomenon became director Tim Story’s comic cinematic-infomercial phenomenon over the weekend, soundly shutting down the Nicholas Sparks adaptation The Lucky One . Or maybe “shutting down” is being kind: Any time you can open on a third fewer screens and earn a third more opening-weekend loot — and more than double the per-screen average — than your closest competition, that’s just an ass-kicking. 2. The Lucky One Gross: $22,805,000 (new) Screens: 3,155 (PSA: $7,228) Weeks: 1 And the thing is, these aren’t especially horrible numbers for the Zac Efron potboiler: As the second-best opening for a Sparks movie to date, it would factor strongly overall into the film’s Sparks Quotient . It would also suggest that Zac Efron couldn’t open a packet of cheese let alone a movie full of the stuff. 3. The Hunger Games Gross: $14,500,000 ($356,900,000) Screens: 3,752 (PSA $3,865) Weeks: 5 (Change: -31.3%) God, third place? After five weeks ? Slackers. 4. Chimpanzee Gross: $10,205,000 (new) Screens: 1,563 (PSA: $6,529) Weeks: 1 Now that’s a fine way for Rich Ross to leave Disney : Fourth place on a nature documentary. The guy couldn’t wait two weeks for The Avengers ? I mean, I know they’d moved his personal parking space to a gas station around the corner from the studio, but still. Have some pride, son. 5. The Three Stooges Gross: $9,200,000 ($29,355,000) Screens: 3,482 (PSA $2,642) Weeks: 2 (Change: -45.9%) Someone had to finish fifth. [Figures via Box Office Mojo ] Follow S.T. Brad Bird, Christopher Nolan Stay on IMAX Warpath

Where have you read this before ? “In December, Paramount made the unconventional decision to release Ghost Protocol exclusively in IMAX theaters five days before broadening its release. The move, which Mr. Bird advocated, helped catapult the film to the No. 1 spot when it went wide the following week on the way to becoming the highest-grossing Mission Impossible installment yet. For Mr. Bird, the point is that the typical multiplex theater lacks excitement. When he was young, he says ‘if you wanted to see a brand new movie, the only way was to see it perfectly projected in a really big theater with the bulb turned all the way up and an attentive projectionist.'” Adds Christopher Nolan: “These were cameras that had been to the top of Mount Everest, to the bottom of the ocean and into outer space, but people thought we couldn’t make a feature film. It was absurd.” [ WSJ ]

Where Are You Yeezy??? Kanye West Heads To Film In The Middle East, No Camel But There Might Be Some Sheikhs

Cakes and sheikhs? Forget about “Rockin’the Casbah” Yeezy will be ‘rappin’ it instead! The rapper is making plans for his next film project ala “Runaway” set in the glamorous sands of either Abu Dhabi, Dubai or Qatar. Here’s the details: The Observer has learned that Kanye West, the multi-platinum rapper and Twitter super-user recently sent representatives to the Persian Gulf region to scout locations for a short film. The project, which will take a form much like his 30-minute “Runaway”—a hybrid art film and music video starring model Selita E. Banks that premiered on MTV in October, 2010—is to be filmed in March. Sources tell The Observer that Mr. West sent members of his team to meet with film companies and government officials based out of Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and Doha Qatar to explore the idea of a production. A number of local municipal officials and film companies are said to be engaged in what was characterized as a heated bidding war for the contracts involved in bringing Mr. West’s vision to life. “In Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Doha all of the film initiatives are government controlled,” one source involved in the talks explained. “A bidding war is going on between various government entities and private investors to fund the film. There’s pretty intense rivalry here between Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Qatar. They all want to claim the film as their own and take credit for generating the publicity.” Part of the reason for the excitement? The story—plot details of which were not divulged by one source “out of respect for Kanye’s ambition”—was conceived by the rapper explicitly to take place in the Gulf. He is said to have fallen in love with the region after a concert performance last year in Abu Dhabi. Mr. West’s creative team is moving to the region for a few weeks, as part of an effort to create an “authentic” depiction of the culture. They plan to utilize local talent and production crews, and are said to be eager to portray the locales and their cultures in a positive light, mindful of recent productions that ran afoul of local sensibilities (2011′s Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol was cited as one example). “His reps seemed genuinely enthusiastic about creating a piece which highlights the culture accurately,” our source explained. “There’s a lot of preconceived notions and stereotypes about Emiratis and Qataris, which Westerners often play up. They discussed how Kanye is looking to bridge the cultural divide and break misconceptions.” Mr. West also reportedly plans to cast some local royalty, as “many of the Sheikhs like to be flashy and appreciate celebrity notoriety.” Sheikhs eh? Wonder if cakes and harems are included, or if that is the kind of stereotype these guys aren’t feelin? This sounds so exciting. We can’t wait to see Yeezy work his film magic in the Middle East. Underworld: Awakening Wins Weekend Box Office

Kate Beckinsale’s return to the franchise propelled Underworld: Awakening to a big box office win this weekend. George Lucas’ Red Tails came in second in revenue. Those out to see Kate, who plays leather-clad vampire warrior Selene, kick some serious behind managed helped the film bring in $24.3 million its opening weekend. Was it worth it, though? Movie Fanatic’s Underworld: Awakening review is mixed, but in strictly financial terms, it easily topped Red Tails ‘ $19.4 million haul. Underworld Awakening Trailer Mark Wahlberg’s Contraband grossed $12.2 million, causing it to fall from first to third in the box office. Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close pulled in $10.5 million. Nos. 5-10: Haywire ($9.0 million), Beauty & the Beast 3D ($8.6 million), Joyful Noise ($6.1 million) , Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol ($5.5 million) , Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows ($4.8 million) , The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo ($3.8 million).

‘The Devil Inside’ Defies Expectations At Box Office

Horror flick was the weekend’s frontrunner with $34.5 million debut. By Ryan J. Downey Suzan Crowley and Isabella Rossi in “The Devil Inside” Photo: Paramount Pictures Box office prognosticators, beware: “The Devil Inside” defied all industry expectations with its $34.5 million debut this weekend. That’s more than double where most estimates put the film just a few days ago. And despite overwhelmingly negative reviews, the supernatural horror thriller earned more than 34 times its estimated production budget of less than $1 million. Even some horror-centric sites like Fearnet and Horror.com were among the whopping 93 percent of film critics who panned “The Devil Inside,” according to film review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. Twitter accounts were ablaze over the weekend with reports of audiences vociferously booing the film’s ending. Moviegoers on average gave the film an “F,” according to CinemaScore. Drew McWeeny of Hitfix called it “an insidious kind of terrible movie, simply low-grade bad for most of its thankfully brief running time before offering up an ending so openly contemptuous of the audience as to feel like a prank.” Perhaps the devil is in the details: “Devil” made 49 percent of its weekend total on Friday and was the only new wide release in theaters, with the exception of the acclaimed drama “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.” The Cold War era espionage tale, which expanded to 809 locations, had the weekend’s second-best per-screen average, just behind “Devil” at 2,285 locations. Nevertheless, the Paramount-distributed “Devil” had the third-biggest January opening ever, just behind 2008’s “Cloverfield” and the 1997 re-release of the first “Star Wars.” “Devil” was acquired by the Paramount imprint Insurge, which was created after the success of the first “Paranormal Activity” in 2009. Paramount was the studio behind the weekend’s second biggest movie of the weekend as well. “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol” is the best-reviewed film of the Tom Cruise franchise and dropped a respectable 30 percent after a nice run at the top of the heap. “Ghost Protocol” earned $20.5 million for a total of $170.2 million, which should put it past the first “M:I” movie in a few days. “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows” made $14 million in its fourth week of release to come in at #3. The sequel was #1 at the box office in other parts of the world and has made a total of $157.4 million domestically. “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” had the best hold of any of the previously wide-released movies over the weekend, dropping just 24 percent. “Dragon Tattoo” was #4 with $11.3 million for a $76.8 million three-week total. The animated “Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked” rounded out the top five with $9.5 million for a four-week total of $111.5 million. What did you think of “The Devil Inside”? Benedict Cumberbatch Is Star Trek 2’s Villain

Here’s cause for excitement for J.J. Abrams ’s Star Trek sequel , set to debut May 2013: British actor Benedict Cumberbatch has signed on to join returning cast members Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, and Co. Better news: He’s reportedly playing the villain. If your first thought is “Benewhat Cumberwho?” see why you should take this as very good news after the jump. Thirty five year-old Cumberbatch has been active in theater, TV, and film for a decade, but had a banner last few years with roles in The Whistleblower , BBC’s Sherlock , and this awards season’s Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and War Horse . His acerbic take on Sherlock Holmes is probably his best known and best loved work of late, but his turn as Gary Oldman ’s skeptical but loyal right hand man in Tinker Tailor is another recent highlight; next year he’ll pull double duty in The Hobbit voicing the dragon Smaug and the Necromancer for Peter Jackson. (If you were lucky/smart enough to catch last year’s brilliant British satire Four Lions , you might recall Cumberbatch’s cameo as a frustrated negotiator trying in vain to break through to a bunch of inept terrorists.) There’s a somewhat delicate, dangerous edge to Cumberbatch that could play well against the all-American machismo of Pine’s Kirk in Star Trek 2 , though details on Cumberbatch’s character have yet to be revealed. And look! Tinker Tailor co-star Tom Hardy , another Brit breakout, had this to say of Cumberbatch’s acting prowess from back when they starred in the 2007 BBC biopic Stuart: A Life Backwards . So take it from fellow one-time Trek villain Hardy ( Star Trek Nemesis ) and the growing legion of stateside Cumberbatch fanatics: This casting sounds like a promising move on Abrams’ part. What say you, Trekkers? [ Deadline , Variety ]

Jeremy Renner Escapes Crazy Thailand Stabbing Brawl Without Using Bourne Skills

According to the Phuket Gazette, Bourne Legacy star Jeremy Renner was maybe-sorta (okay not really) involved in an insane-sounding bar brawl this week in Thailand in which an associate was attacked and stabbed by a host of bar employees. Oh, I’m sorry: Bar employees wielding knives and a freaking homemade battle axe . But fear not! It seems Renner, most recently seen in Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol and currently in Thailand shooting his Bourne flick, hightailed it out and escaped unscathed . Wish we could say the same about his reported acquaintance, one Vorasit Issara, who took injuries to his stomach and neck in the melee. [ Phuket Gazette , ETonline ]

Jeremy Renner ‘Not Injured’ In Bar Fight

A rep disputes a report to MTV News that the ‘Mission Impossible’ actor was injured in Thailand. By Jocelyn Vena Jeremy Renner Photo: Getty Images “Mission Impossible – Ghost Protocol” star Jeremy Renner is just fine. Despite previous reports, the actor’s rep confirmed to MTV News that he was not injured in a bar fight in Thailand. “Jeremy was there [but] was not involved,” a rep for the actor told MTV News. “When a fight broke out, he exited [and] was not injured.” The Phuket Gazette reports that Renner had been hanging out at the Rachada Pub in Phuket Town when six employees stabbed and injured two local men, Sri Panwa Resort General Manager Vorasit Issara and Maj Gen Chonasit, early Wednesday. The newspaper further reports that Renner had been in their company, along with Vorasit’s driver, Noppadon Preechawai, and several other friends. The Gazette originally reported that Renner had been injured in the scuffle. Prior to arriving at Rachada Pub, the group had also been spotted at two other local hotspots, KorTorMor Pub and another club near Royal Phuket City Hotel. The six men are currently being held by local authorities and addressed the media at a press conference on Thursday. The pub where the incident occurred has since been shut down for six months because it violated a local curfew. Renner has been in Manila, Philippines filming “The Bourne Legacy,” the actor’s rep said. He recently opened up to MTV News about filming “Legacy” and filling in the spot left vacant by the franchise’s longtime star, Matt Damon. “He’s always been so complimentary to me from the moment I met him. Such a great guy,” Renner said. “He’s a very, very complimentary, loving dude.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Bourne Legacy.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

New Year’s Weekend Receipts: 2011 Ends with a Box Office Boost

It was a buoyant holiday frame for the last releases of 2011, with audiences turning out in droves (and likely family-loaded minivans) to boost just about every film in theaters. Biggest congrats are in order for Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol , which is indeed set to make in 17 days what Mission: Impossible III made in its entire theatrical run. And, look! A bunch more people caught the timely holiday spirit and bought a Zoo this week, along with a War Horse and, uh, Garry Marshall’s New Year’s Eve . Enjoy it while it lasts, Garry. Auld lang syne, 2011. Your holiday weekend receipts after the jump! 1. Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol Gross: $31,250,000 ($134,139,000 ) Screens: 3,455 (PSA $9,045) Weeks: 3 (Change: +5.9%) Tom Cruise’s latest spy outing dominates yet again. Pop the champagne and commence the couch-jumping! (I know, I know. That joke is so 2005.) 2. Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows Gross: $22,095,000 ($132,100,000) Screens: 3,703 (PSA $5,967) Weeks: 3 (Change: +9.1%) Sherlock 2 may not have the flashy buzz that MI:4 has enjoyed, and it’s trailed behind Ghotocol all these weeks, but consider: its domestic tally is only $2 million behind that of the box office champ. Pat on the back, good sirs! 3. Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked Gross: $18,250,000 ($94,609,000) Screens: 3,724 (PSA $4,901) Weeks: 3 (Change: +45%) Chipwrecked is on track to cross $100 million this week. Look at what you’ve done, America. 4. War Horse Gross: $16,940,000 ($42,969,000) Screens: 2,547 (PSA $6,651) Weeks: 2 (Change: +125.4%) At least one of Spielberg’s two new jams is picking up speed, and how : War Horse ‘s whopping increase, up 125.4 percent from last week, only solidifies those designs on the Oscars. And what a no brainer, anyway — what movie screams “Take the aunts and uncles and cousins and gramps to the movies since you’re still stuck at home after Christmas” like a movie that combines Spielbergian sentiment, old-timey war, and a horse? 5. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo Gross: $16,300,000 ($57,100,000) Screens: 2,914 (PSA: $5,594) Weeks: 2 (Change: +27.8%) …unless Fincher + goth punk intrigue + the Yeah Yeah Yeahs + a little rape ‘n’ revenge in the icy climes of Sweden is more your family’s style. In which case, can I come visit next Christmas? 6. We Bought a Zoo Gross: $14,300,000 ($41,787,000) Screens: 3,163 (PSA: $4,521) Weeks: 2 (Change: +52.8) Great! The new Cameron Crowe caught on better this week, probably thanks to those billboards featuring gift-wrapped exotic animals. Just another irresponsible message for audiences to eat up to add to the pile. 7. The Adventures of Tintin Gross: $12,000,000 ($47,841,000) Screens: 3,087 (PSA: $3,887) Weeks: 2 (Change: +23.6%) One out of two ain’t bad, I suppose… especially when the foreign box office is carrying the Belgian boy detective adventure to the tune of $239 million and counting. 8. New Year’s Eve Gross: $6,741,000 ($46,372,000) Screens: 2,225 (PSA: $3,030) Weeks: 4 (Change: +103.7%) Of course there were people who went to the multiplex this week, skimmed past the War Horses and Girls with the Dragon Tattoos , and the Mission: Impossibles , and thought “Y’know what? LET’S GO SEE THAT ONE ABOUT NEW YEAR’S EVE!” Of course. Just die already, movie. 9. The Darkest Hour Gross: $4,300,000 ($13,200,000) Screens: 2,327 (PSA: $1,848) Weeks: 2 (Change: +43.3%) Summit farted a new action-packed adventure into theaters this Christmas with nary a peep of marketing, so we can assume anyone who went to see The Darkest Hour — a movie about killer aliens who look like lightbulbs or light or something — were just playing movie roulette when they bought their tickets. It’ll be out of the top 10 by next week, and out of our collective consciousness even sooner. I guess when you have all that Twilight money you can create your own pre-dumping ground frame before the January dumping grounds even begin? 10. The Descendants Gross: $3,650,000 ($39,675,000) Screens: 758 (PSA: $4,815) Weeks: 7 (Change: +76%) Good on the Alexander Payne drama that, in its seventh week, it managed to sneak into the top 10 with a totally decent per-screen average on less than 800 screens to boot. Let’s see if The Descendants can prove its awards season mettle by sticking it out in the coming weeks. [Figures via Box Office Mojo ]
