The Black Eyed Peas Talk will.i.am’s Dancing Skills

Group laughs off frontman’s lack of onstage moves. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Sway Calloway The Black Eyed Peas Photo: Bryan Bedder/ Getty Images While will.i.am used to cut a rug, these days, when he and the rest of the Black Eyed Peas hit the stage, will’s dancing skills are noticeably absent from the show, which usually includes a slew of other eye-catching props like over-the-top costumes and lasers. “I’m the only one dancing now,” apl.de.ap laughed to MTV News when we caught up with the group at Terminal 5 in New York, where they were taping a show set to air Friday at midnight ET on MTV . But will.i.am has a good reason for his recent lack of dancing: competition with himself. “I like to allow the old me to have the crown somewhere, because me versus the old me — I’m a better businessman now than when I was 22, I’m a better producer than I was when I was 23, so I got to let the old me beat me somewhere,” will.i.am said. Fergie, meanwhile, had this explanation: “The pants got tighter.” The MTV special might not show off too much of will’s dancing, but it will feature some of the group’s biggest hits. “Before we had ‘I Gotta Feeling,’ it was like, ‘We know we gotta play “Pump It” and “Let’s Get It Started,” ‘ ” will.i.am explained. “We used to do ‘Let’s Get It Started’ at the end, because that was our big finale, which didn’t really make sense. And for a while, [we did] ‘My Humps’ and then it got to the point where we didn’t want to play ‘My Humps’ no more. You know, ’cause ‘I met a girl down at the disco,’ I just didn’t want to say that no more, lyrically. “It wasn’t like my best lyrically, but it was fun,” he continued. “It wasn’t lyrical miracles, but the beat was rocking, so we throw the beat in there and just let the beat linger, but now ‘I Gotta Feeling’ is like ‘What?’ and when we perform it, in my mind, I’m like, ‘Where did that song come from?’ I can’t believe this is us, and look at all these people singing it like it’s theirs.” Don’t miss the Black Eyed Peas’ performance Friday at midnight ET on MTV. will.i.am Reveals Science To Making Hit Records On ‘The Seven’

Black Eyed Peas producer says ‘if you want a song to be a big #1 smash, then you have to play a Michael Jackson song while you’re making your song.’ By Mawuse Ziegbe will.i.am on “The Seven” Photo: MTV As the mastermind behind inescapable jam “Boom Boom Pow” and record-disintegrating smash “I Gotta Feeling,” will.i.am has been rockin’ bodies — and those are just the hits he’s pulled off for the Black Eyed Peas. The producer/rapper has also powered chart-winners for stars Usher , Estelle and John Legend and has recently turned his hitmaking skills toward fellow MC Nicki Minaj. On Wednesday’s (September 29) episode of MTV’s “The Seven,” will, who teamed up with Minaj for her peppy Pink Friday offering “Check It Out,” broke down his approach to creating chart-busting tracks. He said he mines inspiration from some of music’s most game-changing artists when he puts together a record. “We call it ‘A-B-ing.’ Anything you make, there’s nothing new under the sun. So there’s always an ‘A and B’ to whatever your approach is,” he said. “So if you want a song to be a big #1 smash, then you have to play a Michael Jackson song while you’re making your song.” He said using an artist such as Jackson as a benchmark will usually let a producer know if a track really has that ‘It’ factor. “What you don’t want to do is have a ‘hit record’ and then turn it on and it isn’t as loud as Michael Jackson’s.” Minaj, who experienced will.i.am’s skills firsthand on “Check It Out,” said hopping in the studio with the Peas frontman was a singular experience. “That’s when I knew he was a freaking, next-level … not even a human when he recorded me,” Minaj told “The Seven.” “The word ‘producer’ … means different things depending on who’s using the word. will’s the only producer that produced me. He really sat there and he got this weird sound, and I was like, ‘What?’ ” In addition to drawing an insane performance from will, the Young Money Barbie marveled at his ability to quickly craft the cheery instrumental. “The beat wasn’t even done,” Minaj recalled. “He made the beat on the spot.” Minaj’s awe for will appeared mutual. The Peas lyricist said the hip-hop upstart is way more than just a rapper with a rollicking flow; she’s an artist. “Her being a dope rapper, a dope MC, is just an element of the Nicki factor,” will said. Usher, Katy Perry, B.o.B And More: Who Has The Song Of The Summer?

Lady Gaga and 3OH!3 and Ke$ha are also in MTV News’ 2010 summer-jam race — who gets your vote? By Kyle Anderson Photo: Interscope Records With Memorial Day weekend just around the corner, it’s finally time to get summer started properly. But perhaps more important than the baseball games, barbecues, pool parties and beach trips that will pepper the next few warm-weather months is the singular song that will provide the soundtrack to all those events. It’s time to choose the official summer jam of 2010, and we’re leaving it up to you. There isn’t a lot of science that goes into a great summer song, but you certainly know it when you hear it. It has to be catchy, bright, fun and sound great cranked way, way up in a car with the windows rolled down. Think Rihanna’s “Umbrella” (the jam of 2007), Nelly’s “Hot in Herre” (2002), Pras’ “Ghetto Supastar” (1998) or the Black Eyed Peas’ “I Gotta Feeling” (2009’s entry). For summer 2010, there are five strong nominees that we think are the front-runners for the title. All week, MTV News will be laying out the case for each, and we’ll be throwing the vote to you. At the end of the week, we will have crowned a summer jam that you can play at maximum volume during whatever long-weekend activity you have planned and comfortably call it summertime. Our five nominees are: Lady Gaga ‘s “Alejandro,” B.o.B ‘s “Airplanes” (featuring Eminem and Hayley Williams), 3OH!3 and Ke$ha ‘s “First Kiss,” Usher ‘s “OMG” and Katy Perry ‘s “California Gurls” (featuring Snoop Dogg). Stay tuned to MTV News and the MTV Newsroom blog for much more on these five jams. So pick out your favorite swimsuit, slather on some SPF 30 and get voting, because it’s time for summer jams! Which of our five nominees do you think deserves the title? Sound off in the comments!

Mississippi school stages a fake prom to trick lesbian

Recently Mississippi's Itawamba Agricultural High School canceled prom because Constance McMillen, a lesbian who wanted to dress in a tux and attend it with her girlfriend. To make up for it's negative publicity the town threw two proms and invited Constance, 2 two learning disabled kids to the fake prom with 5 attendees, while the real prom rocked on other side of town. Article below: Constance McMillen just wanted what teenage girls have dreamed about since time immemorial — to go to the prom with the person she's dating. In McMillen's case, that person happens to be another girl. But the possibility of some same-sex jamming to “I Gotta Feeling” didn't sit too well with the folks at Mississippi's Itawamba Agricultural High School. Reasoning that no prom was better than a prom with lesbians, they abruptly canceled the whole affair last month. Cue media frenzy, ACLU lawsuit, Facebook uproar. After an embarrassing glare of attention on Itawamba, it seemed a happy ending was in sight. Last Tuesday, the school agreed to host an off-campus prom and told Constance she could, per her stated intention, bring her date and wear a tux. On Friday night, McMillen and her girlfriend showed up at the Fulton Country Club ready to party. There, she says, she found just seven other revelers, including two learning disabled students. Worse, she claims that her classmates were off doing the Macarena at an alternate event, arranged with the aid and consent of the parents and staff of her school. Speaking to the Advocate this week, McMillen said, “They had two proms and I was only invited to one of them … everyone went to the other one I wasn't invited to.” Link to full story: http://www.salon.com/life/broadsheet/2010/04/06/constance_mcmillen_fake_prom/ added by: navider

Tiger Woods Apology Mash-Ups Include Ke$ha, Robin Thicke

Woods apology mash-ups go viral online after he holds press conference last week. By Jocelyn Vena Tiger Woods Photo: Lori Moffett-Pool/ Getty Images It seems that Tiger Woods’ public apology last week has gone viral — and in ways that he may not have expected. During Woods’ press conference, he addressed the controversy surrounding him, defended his wife Elin and also apologized to his fans and family for his infidelities. And some enterprising individuals have taken his words and mashed them up with tonally complimentary songs. OneRepublic’s “Apologize,” which is about not accepting someone’s apology, weaves back and forth between Woods’ words and lines from the hit song answering him back. While Ke$ha is teaching boys lessons in the video for “Blah Blah Blah,” it seems in

iTunes Sells 10 Billion Songs

Downloader who bought 10 billionth track wins a $10,000 iTunes gift card. By Ryan J. Downey iTunes hits ten billion sold Photo: Apple Black Eyed Peas, Lady Gaga and Katy Perry helped drive sales of tracks on Apple’s iTunes store past the 10 billion mark Wednesday (February 24). And the person who bought the 10 billionth track gets a $10,000 iTunes gift card. The Black Eye Peas’ “I Gotta Feeling” is the most-downloaded song on the store , with “Boom Boom Pow” landing at #3. Lady Gaga is the artist with the most songs toward the top, with “Poker Face” at #2, “Just Dance” at #6 and “Bad Romance” at #22. Other acts with tracks in the top 25 include Coldplay, Kanye West, Taylor Swift, Katy Perry, Kings of Leon, the Fray and Owl City. All of the top 25 tracks were released in the past five years (Ke$ha’s “Tik Tok” is the newest at #10) except for one: “Don’t Stop Believin’.” Classic rockers Journey undoubtedly have “The Sopranos” and “Glee” to thank for renewed interest in the unstoppable song, first recorded in 1981, which landed at #21. In 2006, Apple gave a gift card, 20-inch iMac, 10 60GB iPods and a music-school scholarship set up in the winner’s name to the person who purchased the 1 billionth download. Apple’s iTunes store was known as the iTunes Music Store when it launched less than seven years ago, prior to the addition of videos, movies and TV shows. Onetime MTV News correspondent Iann Robinson helped introduce iTunes in an infomercial that ran in Apple stores and online back in the day. In it, Robinson explained what are now well-known concepts like single-track downloads, full-album purchases, free 30-second previews of songs, burning CDs and transferring to iPods. “These are the people that changed my life with the simple invention of the iPod,” he said in the six-minute-plus video. “Buy a song or a whole album. Either way, you get album art! Awesome!” Related Videos Highlights From iTunes’ Most-Downloaded Songs Of All Time Related Artists Black Eyed Peas Katy Perry Lady Gaga
