Justin Bieber: Humbled, Awoken by Guatemalan School Building Excursion

Justin Bieber can often come across like a spoiled, entitled brat. Recent cases in point: the singer drunkenly peed into a restaurant mop bucket . He was also carried up The Great Wall of China by his bodyguards. But then you’re reminded that Bieber is really a pretty darn good guy. Even when he keeps his shirt on. Justin spent the weekend in Guatemala City, joining a team from the charity Pencils of Promise and building a school for local, underprivileged children in the area. The funds for the project were raised by his “Believe tour” and Bieber Tweeted that it was an especially “powerful and humbling” experience. Watch the following video for more from Justin, as he recounts why this endeavor woke him up and should serve as a reminder to us all that we’re very, very lucky: Justin Bieber: Woken Up by Trip to Guatemala

U.S. Soccer Team Snubs Troops, Apologizes

The U.S. soccer team is facing considerable backlash for snubbing American troops in Guatemala Monday, but claims it was all a misunderstanding. Team America flew in for a World Cup qualifying match, where troops gathered on the tarmac and cheer them on to victory in Central America. When the guys got off the plane, they walked right to the waiting bus and peaced out, though, without even an acknowledgement or thank you. Some of the troops were understandably insulted. Some soldiers’ friends and family took to Facebook to express their disgust. Among the many choice comments posted after the perceived slight: “What a disgrace that a team that wears American colors can’t take five minutes to acknowledge the soldiers that fight for what those colors represent.” A rep for the team apologized, saying, “The players and staff were simply unsure of the correct protocol in terms of engaging the military members.” “[We] weren’t sure if they were welcoming them or providing security.” Their apology went over well with the troops, supposedly, so that’s good. As for the outcome of the game … we have no earthly idea.

Even before Hugo got solid buzz coming out of [1] the New York Film Festival [2], Martin Scorsese’s whimsical, 3D family film was poised to be a must-see. Now only a month away from release, anticipation is building and Paramount has released a second trailer that, yes, features plenty of fantastic elements but also reveals that Hugo isn’t all about hovering robots and Sacha Baron Cohen chasing kids… Broadcasting platform : YouTube Source : /Film Discovery Date : 24/10/2011 19:43 Number of articles : 2

“Someone has to do something for Guatemala. The government doesn’t do anything,” says a Guatemalan resident Reason.tv calls “Miguel.” In the past few years, the drug war has resulted in more than 40,000 deaths in Mexico and the situation in Guatemala is just as bleak. Last year alone, 5,000 people died in drug-war-related incidents. ‘Predators’: Buffet Dining, By Kurt Loder

Adrien Brody’s on the menu. Adrien Brody and Alice Braga in “Predators” Photo: 20th Century Fox The strapping beastie of the “Predator” franchise remains pretty much the same after 23 years — dread of lock, moist of mandible. It’s the humans in his life who seem to have devolved. In the first film, his chief antagonist was played by that pre-gubernatorial muscle-mountain, Arnold Schwarzenegger. Now, in “Predators,” the crafty alien faces off against the willowy Adrien Brody — not an opponent to strike dread in the heart (or whatever) of any self-respecting behemoth, you’d think. “Predators” is a B movie that knows its job, and does it. Which means, among other things, that making sense is not on its to-do list. The picture opens with a group of people falling from the sky into a jungle. What are they doing here? None of them knows. One minute each of them was sleeping, the next they were plummeting through the clouds. That’s that. Where are they? The group’s lone woman, Isabelle (Alice Braga), looks around suspiciously. “I’ve never seen this jungle,” she says. “And I’ve seen most.” Isabelle hails from Guatemala, where she no doubt saw quite a bit of jungle, but has lately been employed as a sniper by the Israeli Defense Force, whose missions are not often thought to be jungle-related. But whatever. The movie germinated from an unproduced 1994 script by pulp fan Robert Rodriguez (one of the producers here), which was more recently refined by Alex Litvak and Michael Finch. Faced with the challenge of revitalizing a creature that has already been the subject of four previous films (if you count two trans-franchise dalliances with the slobbery Alien), they and director Nimr

Not a sequel and not quite a reboot, Predators sits in that no-man’s land of derivation, where a franchise is plundered mainly for its conceptual cachet, and continuity and reinvention are cast aside as hopelessly old-fashioned. Conceiving of their audience as a chronic video-game player, the filmmakers seem to have figured that fans want only minor variations on the same experience, over and over again. Not that such a calculation is below a franchise born as a goof (the original screenwriters were inspired by a joke that followed the release of Rocky IV : If that franchise were to continue, he’d have to fight an alien) and forced into the indignity of the Predator vs. Alien films. Fans of the original, which had Arnold Schwarzenegger wasting a killer extraterrestrial in Guatemala, have likely grown resigned to disappointment with its descendents; Predators will not change that entirely, but it may summon enough fond memories to sneak by.
