Bafana continues winning streak 1-0 over Denmark

By Nthambeleni Gabara Pretoria- Bafana Bafana continued their winning streak by beating 36 ranked Denmark 1-nil at the Lucas “Masterpieces” Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville on Saturday. The goal was courtesy of Mamelodi Sundowns striker, Katlego “Killer” Mphela, who has been in fine form since Bafana began their FIFA World Cup preparations. It was Mphela’s 14th goal for the national team. Today’s victory extended Bafana’s winning record to 12 unbeaten matches. It was visible from the beginning of the match that the home team was full of confidence and hungry for a victory. Duo Siphiwe Tshabalala and Kagisho Dikgacoi sent a fantastic cross to unmarked Teko Modise in the box in the 28th minute which showed that the Danish defence had run out of steam, however, the Orlando Pirates playmaker headed the ball wide. Bafana looked good in the first half and kept ball possession and when they controlled the ball in the middle of the park, they continued to dominate, while the visitors lagged behind. In the second half, the Danish players tried to take control but lost focus. Reneilwe Letsholonyane had a chance with the ball after brilliant moves by teammates Tshabalala and Modise and unleashed a grass cutter 28 metres from the box, but Anderson was well-positioned to palm the ball away. In the 76th minute the Danish keeper brilliantly saved a close range shot from Mphela. In the dying minutes of the game, Bafana’s number one goal keeper, Itumeleng Khune denied the Danish team an equalizer. He saved a close range shot, which drew loud applause from the hundreds of fans that were present at the stadium. A delighted Carlos Alberto Parreira who has pledged to make South Africans proud during the World Cup said a win against another World Cup qualifying team shows that his boys are ready for the tournament. “To me this is a special win because we’ve just defeated an experienced side with full of quality players. We played with confidence and personality. The path that we took to prepare the team for the tournament proved to be the right one today. “This is a job well-done for the players and I am happy about their performance and the good results. We are ready to fight for our position at the World Cup. Everybody has to respect us,” he said. The team’s skipper, Aaron Mokoena, said it was a tough match for Bafana, but their victory boosted their morale. Source -BuaNews 2010 World Cup Blog for the Fans

MATCH PREVIEW Six years after winning the right to host the tournament, South Africa kick off the first-ever World Cup on African soil. The nation’s hopes are in the hands of veteran coach Carlos Parreira, who led Brazil to glory in 1994. It will be no easy task. Bafana Bafana are the lowest-ranked country ever to host a World Cup and they are desperate to avoid becoming the first hosts to fail at the opening group stage. Parreira’s team haven’t played a competitive match in over a year, but confidence is growing following an unbeaten run of 12 matches dating back to October 2009, with Denmark their most recent victims. Expectations in Mexico are high that the country’s ‘golden generation’ can produce a historic performance in South Africa. The likes of Andres Guardado, Giovani dos Santos and Carlos Vela are the pick of the bunch, while much is expected of Manchester United-bound striker Javier Hernandez. An enormous amount of preparation has gone into Mexico’s World Cup build-up, with Javier Aguirre’s men playing 12 friendly matches in 2010 alone. Their final warm-up match was a 2-1 victory over world champions Italy, suggesting El Tri’s confidence may not be misplaced. MATCH FACTS Head-to-head – This will be the fourth meeting between these sides. Mexico have won two to South Africa’s one. Their most recent meeting was a 2-1 win for Bafana Bafana in Los Angeles at the 2005 Gold Cup. South Africa – No home nation has lost in seven previous curtain-raisers. The record stands at five victories (Italy in 1934, Brazil 1950, Sweden 1958, Chile 1962 and Germany 2006) and two 0-0 draws (England against Uruguay in 1966 and Mexico versus the Soviet Union in 1970). – South Africa are the second-lowest ranked side in the tournament (83) after North Korea (105). – Parreira is managing at his sixth World Cup after Kuwait (1982), the United Arab Emirates (1990), Saudi Arabia (1998) and Brazil (1994 and 2006). Mexico – No other side has played as many curtain-raisers as Mexico. El Tri will be playing in their fifth opener, having lost three and drawn one. – Mexico are yet to get the better of African opposition at a World Cup in two previous attempts: they lost 3-1 to Tunisia in 1978 and drew 0-0 v Angola in 2006. – Mexico have been eliminated at the last 16-stage at the past four World Cup finals. – El Tri have played 12 warm-up matches in 2010, winning eight and losing twice. The Gates of Hell Just Opened In Guatemala City

No, this image is not Photoshopped. It comes from Guatemala City today, where damage from a tropical storm – including 3 giant sinkholes – has forced 120,000 people to evacuate. Here's how you can help refugees. Over at BoingBoing, Xeni Jardin is doing a great job covering the ongoing crisis, and has pointed to some groups where you can send donations. The primary concern right now is food. Crops have been wiped out, and subsistence farming communities risk starvation. But people also need shelter and medical supplies. From BoingBoing: Guatemala is in a state of crisis today after twin natural calamities struck: First, the Pacaya volcano (just 19 miles from the capital) woke up in a bad mood. Lava flowed, black sand and rock and ash spewed everywhere. A newscaster covering the event, near the volcano, was killed by flying rocks. Then, tropical storm “Agatha” struck, destroying homes, causing floods, and creating tens of thousands of internally displaced. Infrastructure in this country-where the majority live in poverty-is very poor, and ill-equipped to handle such a double blow. As of last night, official numbers on storm: about 30,000 “refugees,” close to 120,000 evacuated, 93 dead and rising. The poorest always suffer the most when events like this happen, and the two events together caused surreal conditions: knee-deep black sand mud, and “instant concrete” which formed when rains met ash, clogging up drains and laying waste to fragile sewage systems. Said a friend on Twitter, “Water and sand everywhere… it's like the beach, only a lot less fun.” http://io9.com/5551931/tropical-storm-agatha-opens-up-massive-horrifying-sinkhol… added by: pjacobs51

How does Mexico treat its illegals?

By Larry Elder We can't infringe upon the right of people to move freely within our territory,” said Mexican President Vicente Fox during President George W. Bush's recent visit. Earlier, Fox said he stood by the statement he previously made to the BBC: “I dare say that in 10 years, the U.S. will be begging, will be pleading with Mexico to send it workers.” Does Mexico practice what it preaches? First, Mexico put its military and police forces on its porous, zigzagged, mountainous, crime-ridden southern border with Guatemala. Chiapas – the South Carolina-sized southern Mexican state that shares the longest border with Guatemala – is Mexico's poorest, most illiterate state. About Chiapas, one United Nations human rights commissioner said, “Mexico is one of the countries where illegal immigrants are highly vulnerable to human rights violations and become victims of degrading sexual exploitation and slavery-like practices, and are denied access to education and health care.” Typically, when Mexican authorities catch illegal aliens, they place them overnight in a detention center, then bus or fly them back to their country of origin. Despite the fact that Mexico militarized its border and deported 203,128 illegal immigrants in 2004, many illegals get through by bribing corrupt military and police. Do Mexicans appreciate the way America has allowed so many poor, Mexican illegals to enter the United States? No. According to a recent Zogby poll, 73 percent of Mexicans call Americans “racist”! When asked whether the United States' wealth comes from freedom and “plenty of opportunity to work,” 70 percent of Americans agreed, while only 22 percent of Mexicans agreed. Sixty-two percent of Mexicans said America became wealthy because “it exploits others' wealth.” While Americans, according to the poll, see Mexicans as hard-working (78 percent), Mexicans think of Americans as racist, intolerant and not very hard-working. Racist? Mexico should look in the mirror. According to the Houston Chronicle's Rachel Graves, around the turn of the 17th century, Mexico imported more African slaves than anywhere else in the New World. As a result, tens of thousands of blacks (no one knows for sure – the Mexican census does not recognize them) live in Mexico, mostly in destitute villages in its poorest states. An estimated 30,000 to 40,000 blacks live in Costa Chica. How do they fare? According to the Houston Chronicle, many are illiterate, struggling to get a decent education for their children from government schools. One Costa Chica missionary says, “The kids here are considered by their teachers to be largely unteachable.” When stopped by the police, Mexican blacks are often instructed to sing the Mexican national anthem to prove their citizenship! If so many Mexicans consider Americans racist, why do polls show that nearly half of Mexico's inhabitants say that their lives would improve if they could work here illegally? Intolerant? America legally accepts about 1 million immigrants per year, with perhaps as many as 12 million people living here illegally, about half of whom come from Mexico. Many estimate that 500,000 or more people enter the country illegally every year. California Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante is Hispanic. So is the man who holds the powerful position of speaker of the California Assembly. Los Angeles, America's second-largest city, has a Hispanic mayor, and of the 54 members of California's congressional delegation, nine are Hispanic. The former governor of California once proposed granting driver's licenses to illegals. And in California, under some circumstances, an illegal alien can apply for the cheaper in-state college tuition. Many predict the Hispanic governor of New Mexico, Bill Richardson, former Clinton Cabinet member, will run for president. Not very hard-working? According to the International Labor Organization, Americans work more than almost anybody in the developed world, including Japan. The average American worked 1,824 hours in 2004, compared with the Spanish at 1,799 and the French at 1,441 hours. The Dutch put in even less – working 25 percent fewer hours than Americans. President Bush, against the wishes of many in his own party as well of half of all Americans, makes the reasonable case for a guest worker program that would allow or provide some sort of legal status for those living here illegally. Latino “activists” do that cause harm by staging protests and waving the Mexican flag and demanding their “rights.” For example, Juan Jose Gutierrez of Latino Movement USA says, “We think that the right thing to do is to grant full rights, full equality, under the laws in the Constitution of the United States, to all immigrants, period.” Americans raise legitimate concerns about the competition illegals pose to unskilled labor, and that illegals cut in front of people already waiting in line to get in the country legally. Americans resent expenditures for illegals on education and health care, and problems posed by some who commit additional crime in America. Illegals' attitude of entitlement helps to explain the growing anger Americans feel toward illegal aliens. Students leaving high schools, waving Mexican flags and chanting “Si se puede” do their “cause” – no favor. http://www.wnd.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=49620 added by: nowherefast
