‘Game Of Thrones’ Recap: The King Is Dead

Kings die, dragons flourish and wildfire abounds in the latest episode of the HBO fantasy series. By Josh Wigler Gethin Anthony as Renly Baratheon in “Game of Thrones” Photo: HBO Just as the warlocks of Quarth welcome you to the House of the Undying, so too do we welcome you to this week’s “Game of Thrones” recap! Shadow babies are a thing of the past, blue-lipped magic-users lurk about in the distance, and the threat of fire rages everywhere. As always, Westeros remains a wicked and weird place to live, but a place we love visiting every week. Keep reading for this week’s highlights! The King Is Dead The War of Five Kings is down a player. Renly Baratheon, youngest brother of late King Robert, has joined his elder stag in the great beyond, thanks to the powers of Melisandre’s shadow baby, a ruthless but calculated move on warmongering Stannis’ part. Sad though it is to see Renly go, we benefit from his death in a few ways: 1) The Tyrell family is on the defensive, and that’s going to make queen-in-the-making Margaery Tyrell a very interesting player to watch; 2) Loras, meanwhile, is feeling mighty vengeful over his lover’s death, and there’s nothing quite like a Knight of Flowers scorned; 3) It proves that Stannis is willing to go so far as committing fratricide in pursuit of the Iron Throne; 4) Renly’s death pushes Brienne into Catelyn Stark’s camp, the beginning of a great new chapter for both characters; and 5) We got to see a shadow baby assassinate a king. Really, how bad can that be? Fists of Fury Way up north, far beyond the Wall, Jon Snow and his companions finally reach the Fist of the First Men, a stronghold for the men of the Night’s Watch. It’s a site with great historical significance for the ancient order of warriors, both for what’s happened in their long ago past, and for what’s yet to come. Will Jon be around to see these coming events? Perhaps not — he’s taken a dangerous assignment under the guidance of ranger Qhorin Halfhand, a living legend within the Watch, to stealthily ambush and kill Wildlings on their way toward dismantling Mance Rayder’s assembled army of free folk. Mother Of Dragons Far east — really far east, if the opening credits’ map is to be believed — Daenerys Targaryen and her khalasar are resting and eating well in Qarth, the greatest city that ever was or will be. A few new players are brought into the mix this week: the warlocks of the House of the Undying, blue-lipped magicians with unclear purposes; and Quaithe, a masked priestess of Asshai who is bound to resurface from time to time to offer mysterious words regarding Dany’s future. We also gain new insight into Xaro Xhoan Daxos’ interest in Dany — he, like so many men, wants to marry the exiled Westerosi princess and profit from her dragons — while new light is shed on Jorah Mormont’s true feelings for Dany, already obvious to anyone with a brain. As for Dany herself, she’s spending lots of time with her dragons, teaching them to breathe fire onto meat upon her command. Well-trained dragons mean a well-armed army, and Dany’s certainly on her way in that regard. Catching Fire Dragons aren’t the only source of fire in the world of “Thrones.” In King’s Landing, Tyrion Lannister makes the terrible discovery of thousands upon thousands of pots filled with wildfire, a highly flammable substance that could level the capitol of Westeros in one miscalculated move. Apparently, Queen Regent Cersei has commissioned the stuff in anticipation of an attack from Stannis Baratheon and his men. Now, Tyrion has co-opted the order and plans to use the wildfire for his own means. Exactly what he has planned is anyone’s guess, but knowing the Imp’s sharp mind, it’s probably a better plan than whatever his sister was cooking up. Only Death May Pay for Life Death hasn’t swept King’s Landing just yet, but it’s all the rage in Harrenhal, the great castle in the Riverlands where Arya Stark is currently serving as Tywin Lannister’s cup-bearer. There, she runs into the assassin Jaqen H’Ghar for the first time since saving his life some episodes earlier. He claims to owe Arya three lives in return for the lives she saved: his own and his fellow prisoners Rorge and Biter. All she has to do is name the people she wants dead, and the deed is done. A deal that looks too sweet on the surface pans out exactly as articulated, as Arya’s first intended victim — the torturous Tickler — is found in Harrenhal with his head halfway twisted around, thanks to the stealthy work of Jaqen. One down, two to go … In Previous “Game of Thrones” News …

‘Avengers’ Spin-Off For Black Widow? Scarlett Johansson Is In

Actress sees Widow’s relationship with Hawkeye as ‘another movie.’ By Kara Warner Scarlett Johansson in “The Avengers” Photo: Disney/ Marvel There are only a few more days left to wait until “Marvel’s The Avengers” is unleashed upon the masses and moviegoers everywhere get to revel in the superheroic feat of director Joss Whedon in fully fleshing out so many characters in one giant movie. Two of those characters who get significantly more screen time than they’ve had in previous Marvel outings are Black Widow/ Natasha Romanoff (played by Scarlett Johansson) and Hawkeye/ Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner). Although we don’t see their backstory in the film, the two S.H.I.E.L.D. agents have obviously spent a considerable amount of time working together and share a deep connection and mutual respect. When MTV News caught up with Johansson recently, we asked for her thoughts on what direction their relationship might take in future Marvel movies. “I see that as another movie,” Johansson’s co-star Mark Ruffalo answered first. “They do work very well together,” Johansson admitted. “And I do know that Marvel is invested in the S.H.I.E.L.D. world. I do think you need a bit of the fantasy to keep it alive unless you go really dark with it. I’m hoping that if the fans give the nod of approval that there will be a future for Hawkeye and Widow somewhere in that S.H.I.E.L.D. world. Although I’d like to take the Widow story way back,” Johansson added. “To the origins?” Ruffalo asked. “Yeah, it would be fun to do an origin story,” she said. No matter where Black Widow ends up, Johansson has said she’s just happy to have survived the filming of “Avengers.” “We all took a pretty big beating,” she said. “The stunt sequence that I’ve been the most proud of is probably my fight with … ” Johansson stopped abruptly. “Actually, I don’t know if I can say! All I can say is that I had to fight someone else in this film, and they beat the crap out of me in stunt rehearsals. I have to say I could not believe it,” she recalled. “I was like, ‘Can you hold it back, OK? You know, I’m trying to work it out here. I’ve got smaller muscles than you.’ I was dragged across the [floor]. When we finally finished [filming] that scene, I was just happy to be alive.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Marvel’s The Avengers.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com . How Sad is Jeremy Renner? Let Us Count the Ways

In a new interview over at The Hollywood Reporter , Jeremy Renner gets real about his on-the-brink career and personal life — like, so real you’ll want to give him a hug and then buy all the tickets for Bourne just to help him on his humble way towards megamillionaire action hero status. He’s either a calculatedly brilliant PR strategist or a walking country song. Either way, this dog-loving, single dude, does-his-own-stunts part-time house-flipper is sure to endear himself to all four quadrants with this profile-boosting piece. Oh Jeremy Renner, don’t be so sad! This moment in time is what historians years from now might consider a turning point in Renner’s career; hot from his breakout roles in The Hurt Locker and The Town , he landed supporting turns in Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol and the upcoming Avengers , and will soon debut two of his own starring vehicles: 2013’s Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters and this summer’s The Bourne Legacy , taking over from franchise star Matt Damon . All in all, Renner seems like a fairly well-adjusted guy who’s only now having to deal with fame and all that comes with it. But you know what? Renner’s puppy passed away last month, man, and he is so lonely he refers to his loneliness twice in the same interview. Get the Kleenex ready, people. This shit gets dark. For starters, Renner and bars don’t have the best history. He tells the story of how, on Christmas Eve a few years back, when he was with his family in a bar, “This guy chokes me with the scarf I was wearing. He called me a fag ’cause I was wearing a scarf! Then he shoved my sister and I got behind him and I choked him out — put him to sleep.” Without a trace of irony, he adds, “I’m not violent.” Although, he says, “I’d have gone to prison” if he’d been present when a family member recently was raped. Oh. For that matter, Renner’s pals and bars have it pretty bad, too. And what about that much-reported knife fight in Thailand in January? “It was a silly, tragic accident that happened to this guy,” explains Renner, noting that he had gone to Phuket for a break when an acquaintance made a comment and “got attacked in a bar fight at 4 in the morning. He was saying stuff, and 20 people jumped on him. I was in flip-flops. I don’t do bar fights. Did he deserve to get stabbed and almost murdered by 20 people? F– no.” (Six local men were arrested.) Phew. Time out for some unexpected getting-to-know-youness: Jeremy Renner isn’t just a sometimes house-flipper, he also loves macro photography! In other news, Jeremy Renner has had long-term relationships, but both of them ended. Sadface. As to his long-term involvements, he says he had one five-year relationship with a woman while in his 20s and another that ended two years ago after 4-1/2 years… He met that girlfriend, Jes Macallan — who, as her Twitter account reveals, married actor Jason Gray-Stanford (Monk) on March 17 — when she was 23 and working at a film festival in Florida; subsequently, she decided to go into acting. “That was part of the issue,” says Renner. “I was going through the Hurt Locker campaign and she’s like, ‘Where do I get headshots?'” Are we losing the dudes? Here’s a masculine tidbit to keep the male demo: Renner isn’t one of those sissypants action stars — he does his own stunts! (And pays the price.) On Bourne, “I got injured kicking a table and missing and hyper-extending my leg! I had to get an MRI.” He also hurt his arm, which “will be f–ed up for a while. I can’t really grab anything” with one hand. But forget torn muscles and strained ligaments — the most painful thing to endure on-set is probably the loneliness, which Renner blames for his break-down while shooting The Hurt Locker . “Pure loneliness, that’s what it came down to. It was a whole rainbow of good and bad.” Talking about losing his puppy last month, though, brings the tears. Most recently came the death in March of his 8-month-old French bulldog, Franklin, of a heart attack. For a moment, Renner’s eyes go moist because the puppy touches on the singular problem that has most bedeviled him the past two years. Says Renner, “He was my solution for being so lonely.” Goddammit, Renner. You’re gonna make me cry. The Bourne Legacy is in theaters August 3. Let’s buy up all the tickets so Renner doesn’t feel so alone. Let our box office dollars wash over him like a giant group hug. [ THR ]

T.I. Pumps New Album With ‘Intellectual Ignorance’

‘We got a lot of hot, old-school, vintage T.I. records on there,’ T.I. tells MTV News of Trouble Man . By Rob Markman, with reporting by FLX T.I. Photo: MTV News Who records more than 70 songs for his album and estimates that it’s only 75 percent done? T.I. , that’s who. Since his release from prison in September , Tip has been releasing music nonstop. Aside from the slew of remixes he’s done for others (Meek Mill’s “Ima Boss” and 2 Chainz’s “Spend It”) and the mixtape he just dropped on New Year’s Day ( F–k da City Up ), the King of the South is working overtime on his upcoming eighth solo album, Trouble Man . “The album is about 75 percent done. We got a lot of hot, old-school, vintage T.I. records on there,” Tip told MTV News in December while he was in Atlanta promoting his mixtape. “I’m talking like gutter, gangsta, intellectual ignorance, hard-core stadium sh–, but at the same time we got those over-the-top crossover records as well, big features and whatnot that we plan on putting into play.” T.I. started his career with 2001’s I’m Serious , and while his debut album didn’t make a major impact on the charts, songs like the drug-selling ode “Dope Boyz” made him a prominent fixture in Atlanta’s underground. Through the years, T.I. has been able to straddle the line, mixing dirty street anthems with pop hits like “Live Your Life” with Rihanna and “Dead and Gone” with Justin Timberlake. While T.I. maintains Trouble Man will have an overwhelming street appeal, judging from the LP’s features it will have a rhythmic influence and possible pop presence as well. “I got one with Akon, did a few records with Rico Love. Man, I got records with just about everybody,” he said. “We just putting it together, we done did about 70 records. So now we’re in the narrowing-down process. So we’ll narrow them down, we’ll do probably about 15 more.” It’s quite possible that some of the next 15 or so records that Tip records will be with Dr. Dre , whom he collaborated with on F–k da City Up . “We plan on getting back in and coming up with a few more, so you never know what could become of that,” he said. What are you hoping for on T.I.’s next album? Let us know in the comments. Related Artists T.I.

MTV’s Power Of 12 Headed To New Hampshire

Sway Calloway tells CBS’ ‘Early Show’ about MTV’s New Hampshire primary coverage and election-year plans. By Gil Kaufman Sway Calloway on CBS’ “The Early Show” Photo: CBS News MTV News already showed you some of the Power of 12 on Tuesday in Iowa when we spoke to a number of poll-goers about their choices in that first-in-the-nation presidential caucus. And our young voter initiative will continue on next Tuesday as we descend on New Hampshire for the first primary of the season. This time, our correspondent Sway Calloway will be on hand to speak to voters about what issues are on their minds, which candidates are likely to get their vote and what they’re looking for from their leaders as campaign 2012 heats up. Sway dropped in on CBS’ “Early Show” on Friday (January 6) to talk up the initiative, telling reporters Nancy Cordes and Jim Axelrod why the nation’s 45 million millennial (18-29) voters could hold the key to this year’s contest. “They can help set the agenda,” Sway said. “It’s about the individual vote and, collectively, they could change the whole entire election. We’ve seen this in the past, just four year ago. That’s what the Power of 12 is all about.” And that’s the reason, he said, why MTV created the Power of 12 hub as a clearinghouse for information on voting and a resource for young voters to get information and become informed about the issues. A continuation of MTV’s two-decade-plus commitment to political engagement, the Power of 12 initiative is an updated way to engage a new generation in the importance of political participation. “The Power of 12 is about now. It’s about 2012. It’s about this generation who are experiencing a different economic climate, as well as political climate,” Sway explained. “A lot of young Americans are feeling disillusioned, but they’re not disengaged with the political process. We saw the turnout with Occupy Wall Street . But when I go out in the streets and I talk to young potential voters, some of their concerns are student loans, how to pay for college and coming out of college and not having jobs.” It remains to be seen whether young voters will come out to support the remaining Republican candidates in New Hampshire. But in Iowa they showed up loud and proud for libertarian Ron Paul , even if voters under 30 only ended up representing 4 percent of the total vote in the Hawkeye state. Asked whether those voters will turn out for incumbent president Barack Obama they way they did in 2008, Sway said that while Obama still has the highest approval rating among that group for Democrats, “young voters will definitely set the agenda. If the candidates are wise, it would behoove them to tap into this ‘Power of 12’ and utilize this power and talk to this young vote.” Check back here around the clock for up-to-the-minute coverage on the primary caucuses and stick with PowerOf12.org throughout the 2012 presidential election season.
