Christian Siriano Made A ‘Bo Derek’ Mistake When Discussing Hair Inspo For His NYFW Show

Source: Victor VIRGILE / Getty Let me start by saying Christian Siriano is an ally for the culture. He’s always leaned into dressing Black Hollywood, whether it was coming to the rescue of Leslie Jones who couldn’t find a designer to dress her on the red carpet, or stylishly shaping the curves (and even placing her on the runway) of Danielle Brooks . At the Orange Is The New Black season finale, many of the women were wearing designs by Siriano. While we praise diversity in fashion , we still have a long way to go. It shouldn’t be a headline that a designer is dressing a curvy or tall Black woman. However, his efforts, have helped to push diversity in the industry and call out designers who are still designing for the same, monolithic customer. Nevertheless, even allies can make mistakes. Source: Victor VIRGILE / Getty Siriano partnered with TRESemmé for hair looks for his NYFW Spring/Summer 2020 show and while they only brought the product, he brought the inspiration. According to WWD , Sirano showed hairstylists a photo of Gigi Hadid in a braided style and dubbed the look the “Gigi Braid.” And while yes, Hadid may have worn this exact hairstyle, when I think of braids, I do not think of white women. There is nothing wrong with Gigi Hadid wearing a braided hairstyle; however, there is a huge problem in the industry (and media) with Blackness only being desired or adored when placed on white bodies. Braids have a long history going back to Africa. Specific braided styles represented class and even occasions while some braided styles were actually maps to freedom during the slave trade . Source: Victor VIRGILE / Getty By simply dubbing one braided ponytail, which Black women have been wearing since they were kids as the “Gigi Braid” is erasure of a community of people. An erasure of history. Erasure is a form of racism that has been embedded in American culture when it comes to Black people. To not even acknowledge the history of something is to say it doesn’t exist. He could have still called it the ‘Gigi Braid’; however, it should have had some historical context. With a platform as large as his, simply adding that braids are historically from Black culture and natural hairstyles have seen a resurgence on the runway and red carpet, would have educated a mass of people who probably aren’t looking for this information on their own. We’ve already been through this with Bo Derek and her braids. “Bo Derek Braids” are not a thing. Bo Derek is a woman who wore braids, but she did not start or create the braided style. The ‘Bo Derek Braids’ nomenclature occurred after the 1979 movie ‘ 10 ‘. If it seems like one is nit picking, fast forward to almost 40 years later to Kim Kardashian (who whether we like it or not, influences culture), called her braids ‘Bo Derek Braids.’ Mis-education is also a form of erasure. With the CFDA placing diversity as a major importance, it’s imperative to know that it goes beyond throwing more Black models on the runway . Fashion is fantasy so inspiration will be taken from a multitude of places; it’s important to correctly site where said inspiration is derived. #BuyBlack: Four Celebs With Haircare Lines You Should Try!

Source: Kevin Mazur / Getty Thankfully in 2019, more and more Black celebs are taking haircare into their own hands. Think about it: Who better than to create products for our hair than us?Especially when we hear story after story of them not having products that need while sitting in the stylist chair on set. These discussions often encourage people with power and influence to create change to do just that. Reality star Kenya Moore made a haircare line that would help women grow strong, healthy hair, while Gabrielle Union created a collection that addressed kinky, curly, coily hair types like her own. More recently, Taraji P Henson announced her own line, along with her pal Tracee Ellis Ross who sent the internet in a frenzy when she announced her new collection Pattern. So, if you’re on the market to sample products specifically designed for you, check out the four amazing Black celebrities that are changing the hair game. Tracee’s been thinking about this line for over 20 years:  “I had logged hours and hours in the trenches with my hair,” she recently told Allure , adding, “Many of us can chronicle the journey of our self-acceptance through the journey of our hair. I think, in all honesty, the timing is perfect.” She’s also tried-and-tested the products herself, testing a whopping 74 different samples before giving them the thumbs up. If “green-friendly” ingredients are important to you, Pattern’s got you!: It’s no secret that a lot of products geared for Black women’s hair are more likely to be filled with toxins and other unsafe products. First Look: The Teaser For ‘Just Mercy’ Starring Michael B. Jordan And Jamie Foxx Just Dropped! [VIDEO]

Source: Courtesy Warner Bros. / Courtesy Warner Bros. Michael B. Jordan And Jamie Foxx Star In ‘Just Mercy’, Trailer Drops 9/4 The official trailer for ‘Just Mercy’ drops this Wednesday, September 4th, but Warner Bros. is already anticipating the film will be huge and is teasing the film today. The project stars Michael B. Jordan as civil rights attorney Bryan Stevenson , whose book inspired the film, and Jamie Foxx as Walter McMillian, the prisoner who changed the trajectory of Stevenson’s career. Check out the visuals below: This one will be POWERFUL, mark our words! Here’s more about Just Mercy : Michael B. Jordan and Oscar winners Jamie Foxx and Brie Larson star in “Just Mercy,” an inspiring drama that brings one of the most important stories of our time to the big screen. Award-winning filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton (“The Glass Castle,” “Short Term 12”) directed the film from a screenplay he co-wrote, based on the award-winning nonfiction bestseller by Bryan Stevenson. A powerful and thought-provoking true story, “Just Mercy” follows young lawyer Bryan Stevenson (Jordan) and his history-making battle for justice. After graduating from Harvard, Bryan had his pick of lucrative jobs. Instead, he heads to Alabama to defend those wrongly condemned or who were not afforded proper representation, with the support of local advocate Eva Ansley (Larson). One of his first, and most incendiary, cases is that of Walter McMillian (Foxx), who, in 1987, was sentenced to die for the notorious murder of an 18-year-old girl, despite a preponderance of evidence proving his innocence and the fact that the only testimony against him came from a criminal with a motive to lie. In the years that follow, Bryan becomes embroiled in a labyrinth of legal and political maneuverings and overt and unabashed racism as he fights for Walter, and others like him, with the odds—and the system—stacked against them. Do Better, Hollywood: Dark Skin Actresses Aren’t Just Slaves & Maids

Read more:

Source: Monica Schipper / Getty The conversation on colorism has so many different layers that it becomes exhausting to try and breakdown for the willfully ignorant. Colorism is a direct result of slavery and its effects trickle down in pretty much every area of human life, from the workplace to entertainment industry — especially when it comes to women. Statistics even show that darker skin women receive harsher prison sentences than their lighter-skinned counterparts.   The worst part about the systemic disease is that poisons, obliterates and deteriorates the self-esteem of young, Black girls, who are ultimately the future of the human race. Media shows us that if you’re a dark skin girl, there’s no way you can play the soft, pretty love interest. To them, and most of America, the only roles fit for highly pigmented Black women are that of slaves and maids. “With my flat nose and dark skin, the only parts that came my way were slaves, maids, and a part simply titled 'African Girl.' (Seriously.)” — Miriam Bale (@mimbale) February 27, 2015 When they need a Black girl to play in a predominantly White film, Hollywood execs go straight to the Zendayas and Amandla Stenberg s. Hell, they even let our dark queen Nina Simone be played by fair skin, dominican actress Zoe Saldana . What’s interesting though is that then it comes to making films about slavery, casting directors have no problem finding and hiring dark skin actresses. So crazy how true that is. They always can find trillions of dark skin actors when it’s a slave movie. All the rest of the movies get one to two dark ppl at a time — Barefruitsoul ⚢ (@SweetZenis) July 25, 2019 Don’t get me wrong, we love all the Zendaya’s and Alexandra Shipps, and all shades of Black are beautiful — but it’s time we show young, darker skin Black girls that they’re story is much deeper and richer than slavery. Show them that they’re deserving of the love, attention and praise that their lighter skin counterparts receive in every facet of human life. Be honest, besides Lupita, how many dark skin actresses can you name from the younger generation? And even Lupita wouldn’t be considered young Hollywood. I’m talking Marsai Martin’s class. All of these would be a better actress for Princess Tiana than Zendaya, I love her but we definitely need more dark skin /brown skin representation pic.twitter.com/yZm6fxwYvT — Queen of Blunts (@Erionanunez143) July 21, 2019 And for those who think dark skin Black women are just nagging and complaining, take a moment to look back at how we’re represented in movies that are seen across the globe. It’s not that we’re bitter or angry. Quite the contrary actually. We’re proud of our sisters like Cynthia Erivo who scored the role of Harriet Tubman , one of the most powerful women in the history of women. But we are revolting against the harsh reality that Hollywood is still uncomfortable showcasing dark skin women on the big screen, unless they’re running from Massa or cleaning up behind his family. Ladies and gents, we must do better. For our little Black girls. Hit me up on Twitter @Misskiyonna to share your thoughts.

Jenelle Evans Accused of Friggin’ HOLDING KAISER UNDER WATER in Shocking New Pic

When the world learned that Jenelle Evans had regained custody of her kids , the most common reactions among longtime Teen Mom 2 viewers were as follows: Shock Disgust. Many theorized that it wouldn’t be long before Jenelle and husband David Eason reminded the world of why they were deemed unfit parents in the first place. And many of those skeptics felt they were proven right when Jenelle posted a photo of herself with son Kaiser on Monday. Not just any photo, mind you. In it, mother and son are taking a dip in the backyard pool, though it looks like Kaiser may not be totally thrilled with this. More than a few people online wondered if he wanted to be there at all … or whether he was in grave danger. Look: Evans deleted the pic almost immediately after her Instagram comments section erupted with negative feedback. Some felt that the Teen Mom 2 terror was coercing her son into engaging in an activity that he wasn’t enjoying. That’s the best-case scenario. Others took their accusations a step further and alleged that Jenelle was holding the poor boy underwater. Why? So that she might snap a photo proving how much “fun” he’s having since being returned to his mother? We honestly have no idea, but people weren’t happy and they let her know about it and then some. “Kaiser looks so grumpy he doesn’t look happy,” wrote one Instagram user, stating the obvious. Of course, that was pretty mild compared to what some of Jenelle Evans’ followers had to say. And it was probably the direct allegations of abuse that led the Carolina Hurricane to take the post down. Among those who were unhappy that she regained custody of her kids was Kaiser’s father, Nathan Griffith. Nathan was reportedly an “absolute wreck” after the court’s decision was handed down in Jenelle’s favor. Jenelle’s mother, Barbara Evans, still has custody of her oldest grandchild, 9-year-old Jace, as she always has. Two-year-old Ensley has been removed from her care and returned to the Easons, per the judge’s decision. “The Columbus County judge did a great injustice to these children,” the elder Evans said at the time. “Jace was very upset and didn’t want to go so I didn’t send him back.” Jenelle, of course, was overjoyed by the decision, and she’s repeatedly broadcasted her giddy glee on social media: “I am ecstatic to regain custody of my kids back!” she told People magazine last week after the stunning reversal. “Throughout this long process and final decision, I am excited to be moving forward and continuing to show America I’m a good parent.” Yeah … Many have argued that she’s proven the opposite in the short time that the kids have been back in her care. Whatever the case, the days since the judge’s controversial dismissal have certainly been eventful. Following a police report indicating that she faked the murder of her pet dog as part of a publicity stunt, Jenelle tried to clear the air. She granted an exclusive interview to The Hollywood Gossip (below),   in which she affirmed that David shot the dog in order to protect her kids . View Slideshow: Jenelle Evans: The Cops Are LYING! David Shot the Dog to Save Our Daughter! (Exclusive) Eason says he executed the 11-pound Frenchie with a shotgun after it threatened one of his kids. Now, police are claiming that the incident that prompted the investigation which caused Jenelle to lose her kids was a complete fabrication. Just another day in the life of the newly-unemployed former reality star. Hope it doesn’t end with more death threats (below). Tori Roloff Ends the Internet with Cutest Baby Bump Photos in History

Tori Roloff is getting a lot of questions about her daughter these days. But the Little People, Big World star just stopped the Internet in its tracks by sharing a handful of photos of herself and her son. Just take a look at one of them for yourself right now: Has anything ever been more precious and adorable anywhere in the whole entire world?!? We’ll go ahead and answer that question for you: No. Roloff is expecting her second child with husband Zach and has been keeping fans apprised of her status and her feelings for several weeks now.  The TLC personality recently said the baby bump featured above and below is growing faster than the one she had with Jackson and that she’s feeling a little self-conscious about it these days. Thankfully, however, as a caption to these cute images, Tori told followers that she’s in better spirts at the moment, partially because she is simply feeling better as a pregnant person. “I am currently 20 weeks!” Roloff wrote excitedly to open her revealing message, adding in further detail: I’m feeling a lot better now than I did in my 1st trimester.  My belly button never returned after Jackson and is becoming even less visible now. I don’t really have cravings. Other than gummy bears (but honestly I love them with or without being preggo). I don’t think Jackson “gets it” but he loves checking his belly for baby. Tori is due in November and, no, she and Zach have decided NOT to find out whether their baby girl will be a dwarf or not. They’ll discover whether their daughter has the condition known as “achondroplasia” — which effects both her dad and paternal grandparents — when she is born later this year. “Baby girl is the size of a banana. Which is so fitting because Jackson is obsessed with bananas,” added Tori, which explained the photo immediately above. After previously being open enough to admit that she was feeling crappy about her body of late, Roloff went on to show gratitude here to anyone who reached out to her about this common insecurity. “I also wanted to say thank you to everyone who comment and messaged me about my post on self image. You all are so fricking sweet,” she added, concluding as follows: “I wasn’t looking for affirmation but y’all seriously gave it to me.
