Demi Lovato Has a Message for the Haters

Demi Lovato is busy making new music these days, while also planning a tour with Nick Jonas and remaining clean and sober . In other words: she doesn’t have time for your crap. Hear that, haters? On Tuesday afternoon, the artist felt a need to defend herself on Twitter after a couple people apparently grew upset at her ignoring them in public. “No matter how long I’ve been doing this, sometimes the madness with the yelling and pushing becomes overwhelming and to avoid people either getting hurt or having more anxiety, I go inside hoping my fans will understand,” Lovato wrote. She didn’t delve into specifics, but it seems as if some fans were hoping for an autograph and/or a few moments with the singer. But Lovato was simply unable to provide them with either. “Today I had 2 instances where I had rude things yelled at me because I didn’t stop for every single person,” she added. “When stuff like that happens it actually really sucks. It’s not okay and just remember, I’m used to getting hate but I’m human too. So please..Take your negativity elsewhere.” Lovato, of course, is never afraid to speak her mind. She even called out Taylor Swift last month for being a fake feminist. In this case, however, Demi said her piece and then moved on to a professional announcement: She and Jonas will be headlining the 15th anniversary of the Honda Civic Tour: Future Now where attendees will get to hear all their old singles and new tracks, including Demi’s single “Stone Cold.” “Being able to tour with someone you have considered one of  your best friends for 9, 10 years, you don’t get to do that often,” Lovato said at this week’s press conference, teasing a duet in the process: “We are working out the details, we are trying to figure everything out. We want it to be an unforgettable experience. We are very hands on with all the details. If you ask me in two months I can give you a solid answer.”

‘Ferris Bueller’ Producer Talks ‘Clever’ Super Bowl Ad

By Eric Ditzian Matthew Broderick in his Honda CR-V commercial Photo: Honda Even if you aren’t a football fan, there’s no way you could’ve pulled a Cameron Frye after last night’s and claimed, as the “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” curmudgeon famously did, that you didn’t see anything good all day. That’s because two and a half decades after writer/director John Hughes introduced us to the coolest high school kid who ever lived, Matthew Broderick returned during the big game for a “Ferris”-inspired Honda commercial that had the actor once again pointing out that life moves pretty fast, so you should look around every once in a while or you’ll miss it. Life, then, is all about surprises. Who would’ve thought that, after Hughes died in 2009 , we’d ever see some fresh “Ferris” action? Certainly not the film’s producer, Tom Jacobson, who was utterly taken by surprise when a teaser for the ad popped up online ahead of the Bowl . Shortly before the game kicked off, MTV News called Jacobson to get his take on the spot, what Hughes would make of it and whether we’ll ever get an actual “Ferris Bueller” sequel. MTV : So what’s your take on the new ad? Tom Jacobson : I think it’s fantastic. The fact that Ferris is a cultural phenomenon and representative of something is cool. I thought it was very well-done. Todd Phillips [who directed the ad] did a really good job. Matthew was great. When the first thing was released, with him just opening the window, it was the same voice. It was the same reading as Ferris 26 years ago. MTV : It was eerily similar. Jacobson : He’s a good actor. Clearly it’s part of him, and that’s why he was so good in the first one. It’s interesting, because the movie is 26 years old this June, and everyone still knows who Ferris is. Even kids know who Ferris is. It’s not generational. I have a 14-year-old son, and last year, when he was in seventh grade, they had a school sleepover thing and the movie they showed was “Ferris Bueller.” All the teachers and all the administration, they were the ones raised on “Ferris Bueller.” MTV : Did you know the commercial was coming? Jacobson : I didn’t know it was coming, and I was surprised. At first, I was like, “What?” Everybody was calling me, and my kids were sending me these links, like, “Dad, did you see this?” I looked it up and loved it. MTV : That was just the teaser? Jacobson : Yeah, just the 15-second thing. MTV : So what were you thinking? Did you think they were making a sequel? Jacobson : I was just a consumer. There was all this Internet rumor about, “What’s this for? Is there a ‘Ferris 2′?” So I did my own calling around and found out pretty quickly it was a car commercial. I actually spoke to Matthew on Monday and Tuesday and told him he did a great job. I emailed him and said it’s amazing how many emails I’ve got about this. And he said the same thing and his BlackBerry was blowing up and it’s amazing how the movie resonates after all these years. MTV : When you saw the full commercial, was there one moment or reference that you thought was particularly cool? Jacobson : It was more the imagery. The way it was framed. And Matthew playing himself. That was very clever and postmodern. MTV : What do think John Hughes would make of this? Ferris Bueller doing a car commercial for the Super Bowl? Jacobson : I can’t really speak for what he would think. He was very protective of his material. It’s unique stuff that he created. I don’t know how he would feel. It’s always a question about how artists feel about their material promoting something else. I’m proud it’s part of the culture. I’ll separate it from the product side of it and the fact that someone bought the rights to sell something else. MTV : Is this ad the closest we’re ever going to get to seeing a “Ferris Bueller” sequel? Jacobson : There are a lot of people involved in that decision. We’ve never tried it before. John never wanted to do it. MTV : Why do you think the film still resonates? Jacobson : I think there’s a very simple sentiment in the movie, which he repeats at the end: Life moves pretty fast, and if you don’t stop and look around, it’ll pass you by. It’s one of those Confucius sayings that the whole movie emblemizes. It’s even truer now. The world moves so fast. It’s true for grownups. And there’s the magic on John Hughes’ execution — the fairy-tale nature of it. Why do fairy tales last for a thousand years? Why does the myth of Ulysses last for 2,000 years? Because they’re mythological journeys, and John made one of those. That’s Ferris’ journey. Here’s Your Ferris Bueller-Themed Honda Super Bowl Ad

The mysterious Ferris Bueller-themed Honda commercial that I was telling you about last week has been unveiled. On the one hand, it’s just Matthew Broderick and a string of references to Ferris Bueller’s Day Off , with the actor calling out ill to work to go frolic around town in his Honda CR-V. So technically, no legacies were harmed in the making of this TV spot. On the other hand, for a guy who’s supposed to be having a day off, I don’t know if I’ve never seen Broderick work harder in my life. Anyway, give it a try! Ferris Bueller-Inspired Super Bowl Ad Debuts

By Eric Ditzian Matthew Broderick in his Honda CR-V commercial Photo: Honda In retrospect, perhaps it would have been better for Ferris Bueller to stay hidden away in Hollywood retirement. Perhaps when the classic ’80s troublemaker reappeared in a viral video last week — a teaser spot leading up to a Super Bowl ad for Honda — we should have realized no good could come of hauling out a movie icon to shill for the auto industry. And now, as depressing as an early-bird special, the commercial has arrived long ahead of primetime. Inspired by but not reprising his Ferris role, Matthew Broderick shuffles through the commercial, halfheartedly repeating lines from “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” and finding himself in situations ripped from the 1986 John Hughes comedy. Once again, Broderick doesn’t want to work, so he fakes an illness and heads off on an adventure. When he says to the camera, like Ferris had more than 25 years ago, “One of the worst performances of my life, and he never doubted it for a second,” we can’t help feeling Mr. Broderick is trying to tell us all something that might not make Honda execs so happy. Or perhaps the joke is on us. The Web has been abuzz for days about the ad and the extended version, available now on YouTube, will only ensure Ferris and Honda are part of the pop-culture conversation in the lead-up to Sunday’s Super Bowl. Why the ad arrived so early, though, remains an open question. We have many others. Is it true, as the automotive blog Jalopnik reported, that “Hangover” director Todd Phillips oversaw the effort, and if so, why is the whole thing not funnier? Why did Broderick play himself, rather than Ferris? Does Broderick really need the money? And what would Hughes, who passed away in 2009, say? At the same time, it could be worse. The ad did deliver some amusing moments (a staring contest with a walrus, for example) and we never get tired of “Oh Yeah” by Yello. At the very least, the ad made for a far better reimagining of a beloved ’80s comedy than Billy Crystal’s short-form sequel last year to “When Harry Met Sally…” That viral video managed to be both unfunny and sacrilegious.
