That American Idol thing worked out pretty well for Jessica Sanchez, huh? The talented singer got a boyfriend out of it, fellow Season 10 contestant DeAndre Brackensick , and also confirmed a record deal this week, telling the crowd at the iHeartRadio American Idol tour stop in New York City Wednesday night that she is signed to Interscope Records. Sanchez also debuted the track “Fairytale.” Give it a listen now:
The UnFair campaign, a new anti-racism effort from the University of Minnesota-Duluth, challenges racial stereotypes by pointing the finger at white privilege. As such, it has been accused by some critics as being racist itself. University of Minnesota-Duluth calls the UnFair Campaign “a major anti-racism effort focusing on the role white people can play in addressing racial disparities.” Sounds good, right? See if you think so after watching it: University of Minnesota Anti-Racism Campaign The 30-second spot shows multiple white men and women, remarks stenciled in black on their faces, explaining what being white provides them inherently. One white male declares, “society was setup for us, and our silence keeps it in place.” Fairly or not, it looks to associates fair skin and features with guilt. UMD’s Chancellor Lendley Black, who supports the effort, said he sought to “create an inclusive campus climate for all” with the campaign’s components. The campaign has elicited some strong reactions from those who criticize it for being anti-white more than anti-racism. Tell us what you think of it below:
Who sings a better ballad, Jessica Sanchez or Lea Michele? Television viewers may be able to answer this question later this year, as sources confirm that the American Idol runner-up is nearing a deal to guest star on Glee Season 4 . Jessica Sanchez – “And I’m Telling You I’m Not Going” Details are unknown at this time and Sanchez would not appear until around midseason because she could not start shooting until the American Idol Live tour is finished in September. But TV Line claims Jessica will stop by multiple episodes and either get involved with Michele’s Rachel in New York or the core singing group in Ohio. She’d be the latest big name to play a role on Glee , with Kate Hudson and Sarah Jessica Parker already signed on for the new season. The only question remaining: Does Glenn Beck think Jessica Sanchez will make Glee more horrifying or less horrifying?
We’ve found her! The only female on the planet who did not vote Phillip Phillips for American Idol champion! Granted, she’s like four years old. It’s both hilarious and heart-breaking to watch her reaction to this week’s finale results. But it should at least be comforting to Fox executives – following a season where ratings tumbled – to know that at least some fans out there still care. A lot. While Phillip Phillips’ win drew a record 132 million votes, ratings were down 30 percent. By Gil Kaufman Phillip Phillips, Jessica Sanchez and Ryan Seacrest on ‘American Idol’ Photo: Getty Images It was the best of times and the worst of times for “American Idol” this week. Yes, a record 132 million votes came in on Tuesday night to help Phillip Phillips take home the top prize. But when the ratings for the finale were tallied up, well, nobody was popping corks or firing up the confetti cannons anymore. Ponder this, ratings for the season 11 finale were half of what they were during the 2003 season when Ruben Studdard and Clay Aiken duked it out in front of 38 million viewers. Half is still 21.5 million, but that number is way down (27 percent) from the 29.3 million who saw Scotty McCreery take home the crown last year. In fact, according to finale Nielsen Co. figures, Wednesday night’s “Idol” viewership is the smallest ever for the show’s finale. Not only was the tune-in number all all-time low, but the show’s 6.4 rating among the coveted adults 18-49 demographic was down 30 percent from last year as well. “Idol” can take some solace in easily beating the finale ratings for such up-and-coming rivals as “The Voice” (11.93 million viewers, 4.4 rating) and “X Factor” (12.59 million viewers, 3.8 rating). The ratings decline this year was expected, since season 10 got a bit of a boost when Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler were added into the mix following the departure of former lead judge Simon Cowell. Though it came into the season with the bragging rights as the #1 show on TV, “Idol” shed nearly 25 percent of its audience this year, falling below 20 million viewers for the first time since 2003. According to reports, the steepest drop-off was among viewers 18-49, the most sought-after demographic among networks. The other shoe to drop on Thursday was that for the first time in eight years, “Idol” will not finish the season as the top-rated primetime program. According to The Hollywood Reporter , NBC’s “Sunday Night Football” finished the 2011-2012 season as the dominant primetime program in total viewers and in all key audience demographics. “Football” averaged 20.7 million viewers this season and an 8.0 rating in the 28-49 demo. The Wednesday night “Idol” performance broadcasts averaged 19.7 million viewers and 18.3 million on Thursday for the season, along with a 6.2 rating on Wednesday’s. Upon winning American Idol last night, Phillip Phillips dissolved into tears and hugged his parents. It was a beautiful, pure moment of happiness. But, moments prior to that celebration, Jessica Sanchez treated viewers to a lovely moment herself: expressing true pride and satisfaction when her opponent’s name was called. “I really think that Phillip deserves to win and I’m so happy for him,” Sanchez told reporters after all was said and done, adding of Phillip: “He has his funny side and his humble side and he’s just an amazing, original artist.” The same is true for Sanchez, who may have lost, but who was involved in what most consider the best performance of the evening: a duet with Jennifer Holliday on “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going.” Watch, be amazed and wish this runner-up luck now: Jessica Sanchez and Jennifer Holliday American Idol Duet SHOULD PHILLIP PHILLIPS HAVE WON AMERICAN IDOL?
