Jon Favreau Out as Iron Man 3 Director

OK, not a huge surprise considering a lot of Favreau’s recent comments about the state of Marvel Studios, but it’s still sad to read reports that Jon Favreau has decided not to direct the third chapter of the Iron Man saga. Favreau recently told MTV, “This whole world … I have no idea what it is. I don’t think they do either, from conversations I’ve had with those guys.” So, yeah. That doesn’t sound like a guy itching to sign on for another go around. (His rep did not immediately return Moveline’s requests for comment; Deadline drew confirmation for Robert Downey Jr.’s side.) But look on the bright side: This totally creates an opening for Mike Leigh . [ Vulture ]

It sounds grim, but there were some highlights from last night’s programming worth revisiting — all compiled after the jump.

Will Marvel’s Big Picture Wind Up Killing Iron Man?

Pop quiz, hot shot: Say you’re Marvel Entertainment, and you’ve got the sequel to $585 million worldwide-grossing Iron Man lined up with the original star and director, plus a recent Oscar nominee and Scarlett Johansson. Do you do everything you can to make sure that movie is the The Dark Knight to the original’s Batman Begins , or do you concentrate your efforts on connecting it to other properties that no one but Comic Book Guy even knows exist, like Thor ? If you guessed option two, then send your resume to Marvel, because it seems that’s exactly what’s happening.
