Lars von Trier’s Nymphomaniac Promises ‘Light and Poetic’ Smut

The Berlin Film Festival and European Film Market are getting underway as we speak, exposing an all-new crop of good, bad and WTF-inducing projects we’ll be hearing and/or seeing about in the year or two to come. But there are also revelations to be found regarding more familiar titles. Take Lars von Trier’s already notorious , sexually explicit Nymphomaniac , for example. /film points us all to the film’s refined description in the EFM guide: NYMPHOMANIAC is the light and poetic story of a woman’s erotic journey from birth to the age of 50 as told by the main character, the self-diagnosed nymphomaniac, Joe. On a cold winter’s evening Seligman, an old bachelor, finds Joe semi-unconscious and beaten up in an alleyway. After bringing her to his flat he sees to her wounds while trying to understand how things could have gone so wrong for her. He listens intently as she over the next 8 chapters recounts the lushly branched-out and multifaceted story of her life, rich in associations and interjecting incidents. Said “erotic journey” will reportedly be populated by porn-star stand-ins doing the dirty work for the more mainstream stars, including leading lady Charlotte Gainsbourg, who recently drew a broad line regarding her role: I haven’t read the script; I sort of had to commit to doing the film without reading it. I know he wants to use porn actors as doubles, like we did in Antichrist , so they would do those shots but then we’d do the rest. I don’t know up to what point, but I know I have limits. I had limits on Antichrist – I remember, he asked me to jerk off the porn actor, and that’s when I said I couldn’t. So we will see what my limit is for the next one. Shooting should commence this summer, with hardcore and softcore versions expected to follow down the line. Generally this kind of thing would be timed to premiere at Cannes, but we all know how that went last time . So… Berlinale 2013? SXSW? Who’s up for Lars-BQ and Lone Stars? Ugh, forget it. Consider Uggie, Day 7: Is Artist Wonder Dog ‘Facing Retirement’?

Even if no awards body deigns to recognize the year’s finest screen work by a dog (or anyone else, for that matter), we can all take some comfort in knowing that Movieline’s Consider Uggie campaign has attained an apex of some kind: The Artist ‘s wonder-dog sidekick has been featured in that celebrated repository of prestige, glamor and influence otherwise known as Page Six. But that’s the good news; another, more troubling report on Uggie suggests that this campaign may be his last shot at golden glory.

At HIFF: Alexander Skarsgård Loves the Hamptons, Critics Not So Much

Greeting from the Hamptons International Film Festival! Located just a two-hour bus jaunt east of New York City, the fest seemed like an ideal place for Movieline to embark on an overnight filmgoing getaway. And just like that, I bumped into Alexander Skarsgård, who’s here representing Lars von Trier’s spellbinding (if mildly embattled) masterpiece Melancholia .

Tom Six on The Human Centipede II and What’s In Store for His American-Set Trilogy Ender

Dutch filmmaker Tom Six cut a striking figure last month at Fantastic Fest , where he appeared — ever-smiling and clad head to toe in a pristine white suit, his outfit of choice — to world premiere his squirm-inducing body horror sequel, The Human Centipede II (Full Sequence) . The following day Movieline spoke with Six about the film, in which he meets the challenge of one-upping himself in the escalation of extremes in gory, grotesque detail. Upon hearing that an audience member fainted the previous night , Six professed his sympathy. He was sorry to hear it, he said with a grin. Well, maybe not completely sorry.

Kirsten Dunst: "My Boobs Were Too Big for Antichrist"

Usually it’s their mutual director pal Lars Von Trier publicly putting his foot in this mouth , but in a recent interview Melancholia star Kirsten Dunst had a bit of a Von Diss for her fellow Von Leading Lady, Charlotte Gainsbourg . Explaining her motivations for taking the Melancholia role, Kirsten referenced Von Trier’s earlier flick, Antichrist , where Charlotte does some pretty shocking things involving rusty scissors and her own genitals: “That kind of film is harder for someone like me to get away with. I’m more in the public eye than Charlotte,” Dunst told The Guardian UK . “It’s something about Charlotte’s body, too. You couldn’t have someone like me, with big breasts, in that film. Charlotte’s thin and her breasts are small and that’s easier to watch somehow. For someone like me to do that film – it would almost be ridiculously shocking.” Ladies, ladies, let’s be fair. Big boobs, small boobs, as long as we’ve got boobs, it’s all good. Now put those scissors down! See what all the fuss is about with Charlotte Gainsbourg nude in Antichrist (2009)- if you dare!

Oscar Predictions: Even Harvey Weinstein Is a Sucker For George Clooney

“I love George Clooney’s movie, The Ides of March ,” Harvey Weinstein raved recently when asked for an Academy Award prediction. “I love politics, and this movie is the best political movie — it’s gotta be right up there with the best of the best. Seriously, it is the toughest, most incisive, no-bullshit movie I’ve seen this year. And [Ryan] Gosling hits it out of the ballpark. And the entire cast is great. Clooney just nailed it. It’s an appropriate movie for these times. So Oscar prediction? That that gets nominated for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor. And it’s not mine.” [ Vulture ]

Do Lars Von Trier’s Nazi Comments Deserve Indefinite Self-Imposed Silence — or Worse?

Well, now: Lars Von Trier ‘s notorious Nazi comments last May have haunted him all the way home to Denmark, where he says local cops questioned him in connection to charges leveled at him by French officials, post-Cannes. In a statement released today, the Melancholia director issued a promise of his own following the media and legal shit storm caused by his ill-conceived joking, announcing that he’ll no longer speak publicly or to press.
