Madonna’s MDNA: Behind The ‘Eclectic’ #1 Album

Producer Martin Solveig opens up to MTV News about working with the Queen of Pop on her latest chart-topping opus. By Jocelyn Vena Madonna’s MDNA Photo: Interscope Madonna released her latest chart-topping album, MDNA, last week, and whatever special magic she cast in the studio seemed to work. The dance-heavy album sits pretty at #1 this week, selling a whopping 359,000 units, proving that Madonna still is the Queen of Pop. The album is full of dirty and chugging production, with Madge lamenting about her broken heart on some songs and seeking vengeance against a former lover on others. The album gets production assists from William Orbit , Benny Benassi and Martin Solveig , among others, but it’s the contributions from those three that stand as the highlights. Both Solveig and Benassi had a hand in the album’s first two singles, “Girl Gone Wild” (Benassi) and “Give Me All Your Luvin” (Solveig), while Orbit brings some emotional gravitas to the record, recalling their work on Ray of Light. Solveig recently stopped by MTV News and opened up about creating the chart-topping album with Madonna. “We were working with no limits. I think the only thing that she said when we started was ‘I just want people to be able to dance to my music and connect easily with my music,’ and also probably to take some risks at some point,” he explained. “Other than this, it was open to any kind of experimentation.” What Solveig wanted to focus on when it came to experimenting with her was rhythm. “This is why I explored mainly the BPM thing,” he said, referring to the beats per minute of his tracks. “You have slow BPM, very fast BMP songs, twisty and more four to the floor, and I thought it was interesting to explore this, because she hasn’t done that a lot on the past albums. And actually, William did a little of the same. It’s very eclectic. Every song has a little story. It’s a collection of songs that are very different, but you are excited to listen from beginning to end.” With a hit record on her hands, Madonna will have a moment to breathe before she kicks off her world tour later this year. The trek will begin May 29 in Tel Aviv, Israel. Madge will land Stateside August 28 in Philadelphia. Did you pick up Madonna’s latest album this week? Share your reviews in the comments! Michael Bay To ‘Ninja Turtles’ Fans: We Won’t Let You Down!

‘Everything that is near and dear to fans will still be there,’ director Jonathan Liebesman tells MTV News after producer catches flak for reboot. By Kara Warner Michael Bay Photo: Dr. Billy Ingram/WireImage Who could have predicted that a Michael Bay-produced re-imagining of “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” would cause such a stir? While fans were largely onboard for a reboot, the tide turned when Bay recently announced that he would give our half-shell heroes an alien origin story. Fan reaction to the news has been negative, to say the least. So much so that Bay has already twice taken to his Shoot for the Edit message board to tell fans that the reboot will not disappoint. On Tuesday (March 27), Bay hit the boards again, promising that the new movie will include “everything you remember” from the original; he also explained why the film’s name is “Ninja Turtles,” not “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.” “Paramount marketing changed the name. They made the title simple,” he wrote. “The characters you all remember are exactly the same, and yes they still act like teenagers,” he added. “Everything you remember, why you liked the characters, is in the movie. This script is being developed by two very smart writers, with one of the original creators of Ninja Turtles. They care VERY MUCH about making this film for the fans. Everyone on this team cares about the fans. Just give them a chance. Jonathan [Liebesman], the director, is a major fan of the whole franchise. HE’S NOT GOING TO LET YOU DOWN.” Speaking of Liebesman, MTV News caught up with the director as he promoted his latest, “Wrath of the Titans,” and he seemed to share Bay’s sentiment, saying the new version will preserve “the essence” of the original. “What’s important to me are the characters that Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird created, the essence is preserved, and we’re true to that,” Liebesman said. “And everything that is near and dear to fans will still be there, every new thing we think of is tied into the mythology. We’re not going to betray anything that has been there before — I’m a fan myself.” “Ninja Turtles” is due in theaters Christmas 2013. ‘American Idol’ A ‘Constant Struggle’ For Erika Van Pelt

‘I think a lot of your fate rides on what sort of light [the judges] shed on you,’ latest castoff tells MTV News. By Christina Garibaldi Photo: FOX “American Idol” fans might still be scratching their heads as to why Erika Van Pelt was sent home on last week’s episode. With a brand-new makeover , the singer took on Billy Joel’s “New York State of Mind” and received mostly positive feedback from the judges, so when she was eliminated, it not only shocked fans, but Van Pelt as well. “I’ve been in the bottom [for] four consecutive weeks. I wasn’t surprised at that. Getting eliminated, I felt a little robbed, I can’t lie,” she told MTV News on Monday (March 26). “Everything happens for a reason.” Looking back at her time on “Idol,” Van Pelt said she felt “confused” by the judges’ remarks , especially for her latest performance, and feels that their changing critiques may have swayed voters. “I think a lot of your fate rides on what sort of light [the judges] shed on you,” Van Pelt said. “For me, I was doing ‘New York State of Mind,’ which is a ballad, and every time Billy Joel has ever performed it, he’s been sitting behind a piano, he’s not dancing around, and [Jennifer Lopez] made some comments about me planting my feet. I just wasn’t feeling it. I don’t feel like I need to jump around to sing. There are a few other contestants on the show that do nothing but stand there and sing, and they don’t say anything to them. [At] the very least, they get standing O’s, and they like that. I just felt it was a constant struggle for me.” Yet Van Pelt doesn’t feel like she was the only contestant receiving contradicting feedback week after week. “There are a lot of really great performers,” Van Pelt said. “Even my personal favorites have gotten some really sort of questionable feedback. I thought their performances were great, and they’d get slammed by the judges. It’s a weird thing. I feel like you never really know.” This summer, Van Pelt will join the other top 10 contestants on tour, where she said she will finally be able to show fans who she really is. “I felt like I was kind of kept in a box a little bit,” Van Pelt said of her time on “Idol.” “It’s just reality, just the structure of the show didn’t allow me to show who I really am as an artist. I have a lot of facets, and I’ve felt like they may have pegged me as this one thing and pushed me in that one direction, but I got a lot going on.” Were you surprised Erika was eliminated? Let us know in the comments. Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions.
