J. Cole Says Drake Initiated ‘In The Morning’ With Text

MC talks to Mixtape Daily about Friday Night Lights collaboration: ‘It’s the perfect song for us to get on first.’ By Jayson Rodriguez J. Cole Photo: MTV News Celebrity Favorites: J. Cole The old adage is that great minds think alike, and regarding the J. Cole and Drake collabo “In the Morning,” the saying couldn’t be more true. The two young MCs finally linked up on the track from Cole’s recently released mixtape, Friday Night Lights . It happened as a result of a budding friendship between the two, despite blog fodder that the rhyme slingers don’t get along. “I got a text from Drake,” Cole told Mixtape Daily . “Now, I kind of just let people say what they say on the Internet or when they have discussions, but the real truth is me and Drake are cool, and have been cool and have been building a relationship. But he hit me when I was in Paris [on a tour], like, ‘Yo, I just heard this “In the Morning.” ‘ He had just heard it for the first time. He said it was so good that he told me some wild story, you know those exaggerated stories, like ‘I need better beats,’ just one of those type of things, giving me props.” Cole originally recorded “In the Morning” in 2007 in his bedroom, featuring three of his own verses. The track almost made one of the North Carolina rapper’s previous mixtape efforts, but he held onto it before it eventually leaked to the Web. When Drake sent him a message, however, he told the Toronto lyricist he had actually been thinking about reworking “In the Morning.” Cole said Drake responded: “Save me 16.” When Cole hit Stateside, he reached out to the song’s producers, L&X Music, and requested the file. He said he tweaked it with a breakdown and some other additions to “take it to the next level.” Drake sent Cole his verse earlier this month, Cole released the record Thursday, and was aflutter over the Roc Nation signee and the Young Money solider finally doing a song together. “The rumors of tension [between us] were so high, I thought it was cool to break the ice with that type of record,” Cole said of the slow burner. “And like [Drake] said, it’s the perfect song for us to get on first,” he added. “Because everyone is expecting ‘Brooklyn’s Finest,’ and I don’t know if it’s like that. [Drake] said it himself : We got a long time to do those records.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines . Related Videos Mixtape Daily: J. Wiz Khalifa ‘Went Out On A Limb’ Turning Down Drake Tour

‘I figured I’d try a different method, and it ended up working for me,’ he tells MTV News of opting for his own headlining jaunt instead. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Sway Calloway Wiz Khalifa Photo: MTV News Wiz Khalifa said he went with his gut when he turned down Drake’s offer to open for him on the Light Dreams and Nightmares outing, instead embarking on his own headlining effort, the Waken Baken Tour. With only a handful of dates left and after a series of sellouts, the Pittsburgh rapper is pretty sure he made the right call, even being named MTV News’ Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2010 . “I went out on a limb and went with my gut feeling,” Wiz told MTV News. “It was risky when you go for what you know, but it’s really easy to take the hand from someone. Not saying I didn’t want it or couldn’t use it, but I figured I’d try a different method, and it ended up working for me.” Over the weekend, the “Black and Yellow” MC held court at New York’s Best Buy Theater, where he was joined by his brother in arms, Curren$y, and Big K.R.I.T. for the Hot 97-sponsored showcase. The lanky lyricist said Los Angeles and Phoenix were among the standout shows during his tour, which also featured stops in Chicago, Dallas and Atlanta. Phoenix, however, was the top moment, according to Wiz. “Honestly, it might be weird, but Phoenix, huge reaction out there,” he explained. “Every show was [great]. “It was crazy,” he added. “I felt like I was on TV when I was out there.” Do you think Wiz made the right call in skipping Drake’s tour? Drake Says He’s Going To ‘Create A World’ On Tour

Toronto MC also reveals fellow Young Money MC Tyga is new opening act on Light Dreams and Nightmares run kicking off Monday. By Shaheem Reid Drake Photo: MTV News Drake says when his Light Dreams and Nightmares Tour kicks off next week, the lineup will be a little different than originally announced. Instead of having the Clipse open the upcoming tour, he’ll keep it to the home team with Tyga. “Me and Tyga. Family thing,” Drake revealed last week during VMA rehearsals for his Sinatra-inspired performance at the Nokia Theatre. “I love the Clipse. That’s why initially I was like, ‘Man, I wanna go out with them.’ Huge Clipse fan my whole life. But it’s one of those things, man. Me and Tyga being family — both being young, new — it made more sense to head out there with him and take on the world on some YM, Young Money. Ironically, the last tour date is the day Wayne gets home.” Actually, Wayne is slated to get out on November 5, a day before Drake’s final show in Las Vegas at the Hard Rock Hotel’s the Joint. Obviously, a scheduling conflict could have spelled disaster for the Young Money family. But Drake intends to be there to welcome back Wayne at his homecoming show. “He’s ready. He’s just ready to come home,” Drake said of his friend and Young Money boss. “I know he’s in there counting the days now.” The Toronto native also said Wayne has been working out fanatically while inside and he’s getting “huge.” “He’s filling out an ‘XL’ orange suit. Like, ‘What’s up?’ He’s big.” But back to the tour. Drake said he’s excited to be going out with a more elaborate stage show, as well as more time to perform. “This is my first time ever being able to create a world,” he said. “Prior to this, I’ve had to create my world through performance . You literally have to get lost in the music to make you feel like you were somewhere else. All I really had was like two lights or a couple of lights. My lighting guy is phenomenal. I’ve always had great colors. If you look at the photos from my shows, it’s a mirror image of my music: moody, sometimes eerie. What I did was I built a world, a dream world. It’s not based on a set, it’s based on colors; the lighting is phenomenal. I’ve got this one aspect of it where it goes from day to night. It’s really cool.” And Drizzy promised you’ll get an ample dose of So Far Gone, Thank Me Later and his guest features. “I’m dong an hour and 45 minutes,” the 23-year-old revealed. “For me, that’s crazy to carry an hour-and-45. I have trouble — with all the records I have — doing an hour and 15 minutes. [If] I do an hour and 15 minutes, I’m cutting out ‘Miss Me,’ ‘Light Up,’ ‘Money to Blow,’ records people want to hear. It’s gonna be a real interesting tour. I’m adding all the stuff from Thank Me Later. I’m excited to perform in a world. I’ve never done that before. I’ve got background singers now to make stuff sound sweeter. “Really, I go up there and do everything,” he said of his earlier outings like the Away From Home Tour. “The hooks, the singing, the R&B moments, the dancing with the girls — it’s been a test of my showmanship. … We didn’t go the arena-tour route yet. I didn’t tag along with somebody else’s tour. We still do theaters; maximum 500 people. It’s intimate. I want people to walk away and say, ‘That was great show. It was a fun time.’ ” Will you check out Drake’s new tour? Let us know in the comments! Related Photos Drake’s Style: From A To Drizzy Related Artists Drake

Wiz Khalifa Declines Drake’s Offer To Join Tour

The Pittsburgh MC tells XXL he’s flattered but has to ‘keep focusing’ on his own work. By Mawuse Ziegbe Wiz Khalifa Photo: Rostrum Records It looks like fans will have to wait to catch Drake and Wiz Khalifa on the same bill. In a much-watched Ustream convo with fans on Thursday, Drizzy extended an invitation to Khalifa to join his upcoming Light Dreams and Nightmares Tour . However, the Pittsburgh MC said he won’t be added to the Nightmares lineup, which also features Clipse and Bun B, and has decided to focus on his own Waken Baken string of dates. “No disrespect to [Drake] or anybody else who might wanna see me do some more collaborative things, but to keep building and keep my brand as strong as what it is, I gotta keep focusing on what it is,” Khalifa told XXLmag.com on Friday (August 20). “This is my first tour that I got coming up, the Waken Baken Tour. I gotta at least kick that off and make that what it is so we can do 10 more.” The Kush & OJ MC clarified that although he’ll be working the performance circuit solo, it’s all love when it comes to Drake. Khalifa confided that Drizzy’s offer proves he’s on the right track. “Just the fact of cuz even extending his hand and me being on his radar is tight to me. It just lets me know that I’m doing what I need to be doing as far as staying relevant and staying poppin’,” Khalifa said. “But I think to keep me poppin’ and keep me relevant I gotta stay building on top of what I’m doing and what I been doing.” Khalifa also added that he needs to stay on his grind until he can stack paper like Drizzy. “I was looking on the Internet and [saw] that [Drake] made $10 million this year,” Khalifa said. “So maybe when I make $10 million, then we can tour.” The MC added that while he won’t be an official Nightmares act, he may make a special appearance in certain cities. “We can do like some special dates or some surprise guest-type thing, but I need 10 mil too, Drake,” Khalifa said, ribbing the Toronto lyricist. Drake Confirms November 5 Lil Wayne Homecoming Concert

Drizzy also pleads with Wiz Khalifa to join him on Light Dreams and Nightmares Tour during Ustream broadcast. By Mawuse Ziegbe Drake Photo: Michael Caulfield/ WireImage Drake is doing it big right now. The Toronto MC’s debut album, Thank Me Later, is platinum, he’s about to headline his upcoming Light Dreams and Nightmares Tour and he’s just notched 1 million Twitter followers. With that type of success, there’s probably very little that is out of the lyricist’s reach. But Drake revealed that there is one thing he wants that he hasn’t been able to secure yet: snagging Wiz Khalifa as his tourmate. “I had a little bit of a fan moment, I tried to get this third cat on my tour,” Drizzy told more than 30,000 fans who logged on to check him out live on Ustream on Thursday (August 19). The broadcast came on the heels of the premiere of his “Miss Me” video with Lil Wayne. Apparently, Drake was keeping his plan to add another act to his tour on the low. “You know we was trying to get Wiz on the tour,” he said, simultaneously informing listeners and his team who were hanging out in the room and clearly didn’t know what he was referring to. The MC then addressed his fans once again: “Hopefully, the Light Dreams [and] Nightmares Tour, depending on what city we go to, it’ll be Clipse, Bun B and Wiz Khalifa . That’s what I’m hoping. I don’t know, maybe I spoke too soon.” Clipse were already confirmed to join the Young Money MC on the road, along with Houston O.G. Bun B, when the tour kicks off on September 20 in Miami. The chart-topping singer and rapper asked the “Hottest Breakthrough MC” directly about possibly joining the fall tour. “If Wiz by any chance watches this, you gotta make some calls for me and make this happen,” Drake said. “We got that young energy right now, we need to go out here and kill these people.” In addition to making his plea for a more Taylor Gang-friendly Light Dreams tour lineup, the MC said he really wants to work with producer 9th Wonder on the follow-up to Thank Me Later. “9th, can we start this next album please?” Drake asked. “Because I know you in the studio,” he added, urging the North Carolina artist to work on his sophomore effort, which Drizzy hopes to release by next year. The rapper also revealed that he initially wanted the ex-Little Brother beatsmith to contribute to Later, but wasn’t able to make it happen. “I’d greatly appreciate it if we could get some work done because I know last time we weren’t able to do that.” While his touring and production rosters are still up in the air, Drake said he could confirm to fans that one particular event is a definite: a homecoming concert for Lil Wayne. “November 5, the Welcome Home Weezy concert,” Drake said. Although he didn’t reveal the location, Drizzy assured fans they wouldn’t want to miss it. “That’s gonna be crazy,” Drizzy smiled. “I told you I got you. I would never just Ustream and talk about nothing.” Do you think Drake and Wiz Khalifa should tour together? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Drake Lil Wayne Wiz Khalifa
