‘Isn’t it Awesome?’ Elijah Wood on The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings 10 Years Later

Elijah Wood has a new hit on his hands in Wilfred , the offbeat FX comedy about a depressed young man’s relationship with the canine next door — whom he happens to visualize and converse with as a dude in a dog suit (played by the show’s co-creator, Jason Gann). Wilfred debuted last week to 2.6 million viewers, the network’s highest ratings ever for a comedy premiere. Not bad at all, but it has a ways to go before catching up with the other phenomenon in Wood’s life.

Behind-the-Scenes Video of The Hobbit with Peter Jackson: Part 1 of 100

Not only is Peter Jackson taking on the intense, arduous task of bringing another epic fantasy novel to life, but he’s still finding time to explain his technical decisions and also make ten-minute video diary entries for each step of the way. He’s just posted the first video, but given that production just started shooting, is it safe to assume we’ll see about a hundred of these before the movie finally hits?

Matt Reeves to Write and Direct Remake of They Live

Nobody wants to call it a “remake,” but if it walks like the original source material and quacks like the original source material… Matt Reeves ( Cloverfield ), who handily re-imagined John Ajvide Lindqvist’s novel Let the Right One In into the 2010 film Let Me In , is writing and will direct a script based on Ray Nelson’s short story 8 O’C lock in the Morning , which was previously adapted into John Carpenter’s 1988 horror comedy They Live . Reeves’ version, it’s noted, will not feature alien-spotting sunglasses and probably won’t star “Rowdy” Roddy Piper. See, totally different! [ Deadline ]

Peter Jackson Explains Why He’s Filming The Hobbit at Groundbreaking Frame Rate

Writing from the set of The Hobbit , Peter Jackson took to Facebook Monday to blog his thoughts on filming at 48 frames per second — the increased frame rate championed by folks like James Cameron, who will use it to blow minds in Avatar 2 and 3 . Jackson is currently filming The Hobbit in 3-D at 48 fps instead of the industry standard 24 fps, and as a result, the Lord of the Rings follow-up will be the first wide release to pave the way into a brave new digital world of filmmaking — whether or not theaters around the world are ready for it.

Labor Unrest In The Shire: SAG & AFTRA Nix Non-Union The Hobbit

Quick! Someone dub Norma Rae over in Elvish! The trouble-prone film adaptation to The Hobbit has had to jump over an unusually large number of hurdles for prequel to a multibillion dollar movie series. First,MGM, its parent distributing company, went through a protracted bankruptcy, freezing the film’s funds. Then its original director, Guillermo del Toro dropped out, leading Peter Jackson to once again take the reins. And now it seems like the Scylla and Charybdis of actors’ unions are giving it the stinkeye.

After Years of Work, Guillermo del Toro Bolts From The Hobbit

Guillermo del Toro has been attached to direct The Hobbit for two years, and he’s even been quietly auditioning actors for it over the last month (including one recent alum of Movieline’s Verge feature — guess who!), but it’s been impossible for him to proceed as planned with the Lord of the Rings prequel without a firm greenlight from the in-turmoil, unsold MGM. Therefore, he announced today, he’s leaving the project.

Lindsay Lohan vs. Glee

It turns out that Lindsay Lohan did see last week’s Madonna-themed episode of Glee , in which McKinley High’s guidance counselor (Jayma Mays) lamented that today’s teenage girls only have role models like Lindsay Lohan, who “looks like something out of Lord of the Rings ,” to emulate. Lohan responded on Sunday night via Twitter: “#gleecast i hope that the show was referring to me looking like a fairy! with the- and the ‘guidance couselor’ [sic] she’s not a natural redhead.” Your move, Ryan Murphy.
