How Madonna Got ‘Badass’ Nicki Minaj, M.I.A. On MDNA

Producer Martin Solveig tells MTV News about recording ‘Give Me All Your Luvin,’ ‘I Don’t Give A’ and ‘B-Day Song’ with three fierce ladies. By Jocelyn Vena Madonna, Nicki Minaj and M.I.A. Photo: Getty Images As if just having Madonna on her own album wasn’t enough, the Queen of Pop enlisted the help of two hip-hop princesses to up the girl-power quotient on MDNA . As she sat down with producer Martin Solveig to whip up tunes for her latest studio album, when it came time to bring more feistiness to the already-sassy album, she knew the only two artists who could perfectly compliment her were Nicki Minaj and M.I.A. (Maya Arulpragasam). Solveig explained to MTV News how the twosome came to appear alongside Madge on the album’s lead single, “Give Me All Your Luvin.” “I had this idea of just creating this sort of mini-gimmick that you could very easily use in the stadium or arena,” he said of the cheerleader-inspired chant in the song. “And so I thought of that, which was very basic. … That was the start. “In the first place, it was just the intro, and then it became a bit more of a gimmick, and she liked it, and so she thought, ‘We should have sidekicks to perform with me on the this.’ … She thought of very naturally Nicki and Maya to perform this because they are badass girls. “I was very surprised [it was the first single], and then it made it totally sense with her Super Bowl [performance] because, yes, it was definitely the Super Bowl song. And when we started, it was definitely not the case,” he explained. “We wanted to do something like this. It was a little surf-y. Then I guess when the Super Bowl was confirmed, they thought it would work for that, and I think it did.” Solveig broke down the recording sessions he and the ladies had for not only “Give Me,” but also the scathing “I Don’t Give A,” which features Nicki, and the funky “B-Day Song,” which has M.I.A. “We were the studio both one day with Nicki and two days with Maya,” he said. “They have both very strong personalities and very different. Nicki’s very pro. She’s like, once she arrives and she spends some time, she writes, seriously, her stuff and then she records very quickly, and she’s like bang . “And with Maya, she’s a bit more arty,” he said. “I didn’t see them together. I would have loved to witness this. Definitely, [Madonna] was definitely the perfect [middle].” The “I Don’t Give A” collaboration got a lot of press, thanks to its seemingly overt reference to Madonna’s life and her split from director Guy Ritchie. “A few days after I finalized the song, she finished the lyrics of ‘I Don’t Give A,’ and I could feel there was a lot of references to her life,” he said. “Nothing that I really know of, because you don’t know that kind of stuff, but then I saw it was very commented everywhere.” In the end, when it’s all said and done, Solveig noted that working with Madge was pretty awesome. “I got a call last year from [her manager] Guy Oseary, and he wanted to know if I was in town working, and that was the phone call of a lifetime when you’re a producer, when you heard all the legend and all the story. So I took the next plane and went to meet with Madonna, and I quickly got to work. “In the first place, it’s very confus[ing] because everything that’s all together, you have a very kind person in front of you, [and] you’re like, ‘Can you imagine who you’re talking to?’ and she’s very natural,” he continued. “She’s very easy-going, so you tend to forget it. But, of course, the first time, it’s crazy.”

Madonna Teases ‘Girl Gone Wild’ Video

Clip for second single off MDNA features Madge getting sexy with male dancers. By Jocelyn Vena Madonna in “Girl Gone Wild” Photo: Interscope Madonna has dropped a video tease for her new single, “Girl Gone Wild.” It’s a black-and-white homage to her wild, sexy days in the ’90s. The fashion video — shot, fittingly enough, by fashion photographers Mert and Marcus, who also did the artwork for MDNA — is fast-paced and full of quick shots of Madonna grinding, smoking, looking longingly out in the distance and being her usual sexy self while clad in chains and latex. It’s intercut with scantily clad male dancers who are seen dancing, touching and kissing one another. It seems that the only girl gone wild in this clip is Madonna. No word on when the full video will drop. “GGW” is the second single off the March 26 album release and features production by Benny Benassi; it was recorded in New York and London. While the album’s first single, “Give Me All Your Luvin’,” was brighter in the way that songs early in her career were, this song is more like what fans heard during her Confessions on a Dance Floor era. “I think the majority of the record is more action-packed,” Madge teased to MTV News back in January about the highly anticipated LP. “More high-energy.” The album also features production from longtime Madonna pal William Orbit , as well as Demolition Crew, Martin Solveig, Alessandro “Alle” Benassi, Hardy “Indiigo” Muanza and Michael Malih. “With William, I didn’t really have a discussion,” Madonna said of working with Orbit. “We’ve worked on stuff for so many years that we kind of finish each other’s sentences. He knows my taste and what I like.” Related Artists Madonna

Ashton Kutcher Actually Reaches Out to Demi Moore

His marriage may not have worked out, but Ashton Kutcher may not be a complete jackass. He’s reached out to his estranged wife since she left her nearly month-long stint in rehab last week and the the duo has been in close contact. Demi quietly and briefly returned to her Beverly Hills home, spending just a few days in L.A. before embarking on a recuperative vacation to Turks and Caicos. During that window, she received a visit from Kutcher. “He came to her house to see her for about an hour and a half,” a source told E! News . The couple is getting along well, although they’re showing no signs that they’ll be back to any romantic habits. A source says that a reconciliation is unlikely. But that doesn’t mean Ashton may not drop by again. Kutcher remains on friendly terms with his ex, and is “determined to build upon that,” however, her daughters are “no longer close” to their former stepdad. Must not be Two and a Half Men fans. Shocking.

Madonna And Nicki Minaj’s Kiss: Where’s The ‘Luvin’?

Video directors Megaforce open up about working with Madge, Nicki and M.I.A. — and why the kiss didn’t make the cut. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Rob Markman M.I.A., Madonna and Nicki Minaj in “Give Me All Your Luvin’ ” Photo: Interscope After fans heard that Madonna had enlisted Nicki Minaj and M.I.A. for her single and video for “Give Me All Your Luvin’,” it really felt like anything could happen with those three equally eccentric and visual artists all joining forces. What they ended up creating was an eye-catching clip full of masked cheerleaders, hot football players and lacy outfits (designed by Norma Kamali) that every fan of Madge’s “Like a Virgin” era will go crazy over. The video feels distinctly Madonna — she is the star, after all — but Nicki’s and M.I.A.’s presences are felt between the cheerleader chant and their equally funky verses. “[It was] quite intense but we had a lot of fun. … It’s like shooting three presidents or something like that,” Clement Gallet, from video-directing team the Megaforce , told MTV News about the shoot. “I think everybody’s a bit stressed. We had time to speak to discuss the idea, to do the fittings. So you have time to meet the people first. I think we maybe thought it would be harder to have these three famous women on set, and I think everything went quite well.” While the trio’s collaboration made headlines, so did a kiss Nicki tweeted about that she shared with Madonna on the New York set back in December. “That’s funny, ’cause that’s something we didn’t really see,” he added. “Basically, it was Nicki Minaj’s birthday on the shoot, but we were — as always, as the directors — stressed about the next scene and whatever happens, that when the birthday cake arrived, we were already prepping the next scene and we didn’t see what happened. And we learned about it on Twitter. So basically, we cannot tell you about the scene,” he joked. Do you wish Nicki and Madonna’s kiss had made it into the video? Let us know in the comments!
