Get Well: Nelson Mandela In Serious Condition In South African Hospital With Severe Lung Infection

Again??? Sweet baby Jesus. Nelson Mandela In Serious Condition With Lung Infection Via NYPost Former South African President Nelson Mandela is in “serious but stable” condition after being taken to a hospital to be treated for a lung infection, the government said Saturday, prompting an outpouring of concern from admirers of a man who helped to end white racist rule. Mandela’s wife, humanitarian activist Graca Machel, canceled an appearance at an international forum on hunger and nutrition in London on Saturday, citing “personal reasons,” said Colleen Harris, a spokeswoman for the meeting. Mandela, who is 94 years old, was treated in a hospital several times in recent months, with the last discharge coming on April 6 after doctors drained fluid from his lung area after diagnosing him with pneumonia. He has been particularly vulnerable to respiratory problems since contracting tuberculosis during his 27-year imprisonment under apartheid. “During the past few days, former President Nelson Mandela has had a recurrence of lung infection,” said a statement from the office of President Jacob Zuma. “This morning at about 1.30a.m., his condition deteriorated and he was transferred to a Pretoria hospital.” It said Mandela was receiving expert medical care and “doctors are doing everything possible to make him better and comfortable.” Zuma wished Mandela a quick recovery on behalf of the government and the nation and requested that the media and the public respect the privacy of the former leader and his family, the statement said. “We need to hold our thoughts and keep him in our minds,” said Mac Maharaj, the president’s spokesman. “He is a fighter, he has recovered many times from very serious conditions and he will be with us. Let’s pray for him and help him to get better.” Let’s all pray for Mr. Mandela’s health. Image via AP Continue reading

Justin Bieber Adds Tour Dates, Shows Love for Nelson Mandela

Justin Bieber may be facing prosecution for an alleged battery incident in February, and the European leg of “Believe” may have hit a few speed bumps, but the singer is still looking ahead to the future. And that future will apparently include even more tour dates! The 19-year-old superstar Tweeted Thursday that his team has “confirmed more tour dates around the world,” adding: “#BELIEVEtour is coming. Get ready.” Bieber also said he enjoyed an “amazing” show in South Africa last night, concluding with support for the first black president of that nation: “Nelson Mandela is the MAN! #BELIEVE”” Unlike his take on Anne Frank , however, Justin didn’t go as far as to state that Mandela was a fan of his . But, come on, who isn’t it?!?

Get Well: Nelson Mandela Hospitalized In South Africa For Stomach Ailment

Pray for one of the greatest leaders… Former South African President Nelson Mandela has been hospitalized with a stomach ailment, according to a government statement issued Saturday about the 93-year-old anti-apartheid icon. President Jacob Zuma asked that Mandela’s privacy be respected, and did not say at which hospital Mandela was being treated. Mac Maharaj, Zuma’s spokesman, said he could not elaborate but that he would be issuing regular updates. Mandela became South Africa’s first black president in 1994 after spending 27 years in prison for his fight against racist apartheid rule, and was awarded a Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts. His public appearances have become increasingly rare, and he was hospitalized last year for a few days with an acute respiratory infection. We hope he has a full recovery very soon! More On Bossip! Bafana Get Madiba Magic

Mandela gives Bafana some Madiba magic Nelson Mandela donned the captain’s jersey on Thursday during a meeting with the national football team aimed at injecting them with a little of his Madiba magic. In a statement, the foundation said the country’s first black president drew cheers and a song from the team when he arrived wearing a number 4 Bafana Bafana jersey. “Nelson Mandela there is no one like you,” they were reported to have sung. South Africa’s sports teams have often turned to Mandela for inspiration before a major tournament or game. The Springboks national rugby side credit him with inspiring them to a home victory over New Zealand in the 1995 World Cup, by showing immense enthusiasm for a sport once associated with the apartheid regime. The frail statesman, who played a central role in South Africa’s campaign to host the football World Cup, aims to do the same for Bafana Bafana, according to a report in Business Day newspaper. Mandela has requested tickets to the opening game next week between South Africa and Mexico, Sports Minister Makhenkesi Stofile told the paper. Mandela’s foundation, which represents the anti-apartheid icon, refused to confirm the report. “We don’t discuss Mr Mandela’s movements ahead of time because of security reasons,” Sello Hatang, spokesman for the foundation said.
