Museum To Fete Martin Scorsese In Retrospective

Martin Scorsese fans in America will have to take a trip to Germany to get a glimpse of Scorsese artifacts and history first-hand. A Berlin Museum will host an exhibition of all things Scorsese, opening the show just weeks before next month’s 63rd Berlin International Film Festival . The show by the Museum of Film and Television is being billed by organizers as the first exhibition worldwide dedicated to the work of the veteran filmmaker, who shared his belongings for the show. Notable items such as Robert De Niro’s blood-soaked shirt from Cape Fear and worn boxing gloves from Raging Bull are part of the Museum’s exhibition of Scorsese’s half-century career in film. Some of the objects you will see have literally been taken off the walls of my house and my office,” said Scorsese, who also narrates the show’s audio guide, according to The Telegraph . “I hope these objects and the exhibition… help give you an idea or convey my lifelong passion for film.” Scorsese did not attend the gala opening at the Berlin institution because he’s currently editing The Wolf of Wall Street , his fifth film starring Leonard DiCaprio. October’s Hurricane Sandy in the Northeast delayed production of the film. The exhibit also features letters between De Niro and Scorsese about developing characters and sharing sand-drawn storyboards for such films as Taxi Driver and Mean Streets . The show is divided into three parts with one focusing on the filmmaker’s home in the Little Italy neighborhood in Manhattan/ The second delves into Scorsese’s passion as a curator of cinema history and restoration, while the final section spotlights his aesthetic in his feature films and music documentaries. “The one bit of direction he gave us for the exhibition was not to focus too much on violence because his work is often reduced to that,” said co-curator Nils Warnecke. “And it’s true – if you look at the entire body of work, it really represents only a minority of the films.” The exhibit continues in the German capital through May 12 when it will head to Turin and Geneva. Quentin Tarantino Defends Violence in ‘Django Unchained’

Filmmaker Quentin Tarantino defended the heavy dosage of violence in Django Unchained , his latest film starring Jamie Foxx , Christoph Waltz , Leonardo DiCaprio , Kerry Washington and Samuel L. Jackson . As with many of his past offerings, Tarantino’s Oscar hopeful includes a graphic depictions of blood and gunshot victims. Tarantino was asked about the violence over the weekend in New York in the wake of the tragedy in a Connecticut elementary school that left 26 dead, most of them children. At a Saturday press event, Tarantino said that real-life violence is the fault of perpetrators and didn’t appear to accept a correlation between incidents like the weekend’s massacre in Newtown, CT and violence on the big screen. “I think you know there’s violence in the world, tragedies happen, blame the playmakers,” he said according to BBC, adding, “It’s a Western. Give me a break.” Django Unchained received five Golden Globe nominations last week and is a strong contender for Oscar nominations next month. Still, Django star Jamie Foxx did say he believes the big screen can influence people’s actions. “We cannot turn our back and say that violence in films or anything that we do doesn’t have a sort of influence. It does,” he said. In the spaghetti-western style feature, Foxx pays a freed slave who sets out to rescue his wife from a ruthless plantation owner, played by Leonardo DiCaprio. Representing more divide among the Django crew that is perhaps a microcosm of society generally, Christoph Waltz said he didn’t believe films provoke violence, adding that the film contained violence because it was in fact part of American history. “The media’s responsibility is greater than the story teller is because… Django is violent, but it’s not inspiring violence,” said Waltz. Kerry Washington offered up that violence in film can serve as an important learning vehicle, educating audiences about historical atrocities such as slavery. “I do think that it’s important when we have the opportunity to talk about violence and not just kind of have it as entertainment, but connect it to the wrongs, the injustices, the social ills,” said Washington. Meanwhile, Paramount decided to move premiere events in Los Angeles and Pittsburgh for Tom Cruise’s new action pic Jack Reacher “out of honor and respect for the families of the victims whose lives were senselessly taken.” The feature opens with sniper shooting several people. And Sunday night, new episodes of Family Guy and American Dad were dropped, with Fox network opting for repeats of the shows in order to avoid showing any potentially sensitive content. A scheduled repeat of The Cleveland Show was also swapped out. Twenty six children and six adults died at Sandy Hook school in Newton, CT. The gunman is identified as Adam Lanza, 20. He killed his mother before heading to the school Friday. [ Source: BBC ]

The Black List Names 2012 ‘Best Un-Produced Screenplays’

Just in time for Christmas, the annual Black List of promising unproduced scripts has been released this morning. While this year’s list is about what you’d expect for a collection of scripts voted on by nearly 300 industry execs nmdash; a high number of ‘based on true events’ abound nmdash; there are a few with rather promising premises. For example, Americatown , by Ben Pool, is a crime thriller set in a near-future American expatriate enclave within the city of Hong Kong. Timely! Matt Aldrich’s The Ballad Of Pablo Escobar also deserves a mention for the craziest idea on the list, which is casting the notorious druglord as the protagonist in a battle to protect his family against rival cartels and his government. The list also includes a script by Zach Whedon (brother of Joss), and one by A Nightmare on Elm Street reboot writer Eric Heisserer, among many others. The full list, plus synopses, is available here . While you read, try to find out for yourself which of these titles will almost certainly die during production. My guess is that Cherries will get a far less provocative name, probably something like Father’s Day . The top ten scripts based on the number of votes are: #10 – 28 mentions. DEVILS AT PLAY by James DiLapo #8 – 29 mentions. ME & EARL & THE DYING GIRL by Jesse Andrews  #8 – 29 mentions. GLIMMER by Carter Blanchard #7 – 31 mentions. Martin Scorsese And HBO Team Up On Bill Clinton Documentary

Martin Scorsese is taking on the 42nd President of the United States for his next project and Bill Clinton himself is fully participating in the non-fiction film. Produced in conjunction with HBO , the film will “explore his perspectives on history, politics, culture and the world.” Scorsese will produce and direct the film. In announcing the film, Scorsese said Clinton is a “Towering figure who remains a major voice in world issues,” adding, “President Clinton continues to shape the political dialogue both here and around the world. Through intimate conversations, I hope to provide greater insight into this transcendent figure.” William Jefferson Clinton served as the 42nd U.S. President from 1993 to 2001 and was the first Democratic leader in six decades to be elected twice. He is credited with leading the U.S. to one of the longest economic expansions in American history. After leaving office, he established the William J. Clinton Foundation which aims to “improve global health, strengthen economies, promote healthier childhoods and protect the environment by fostering partnerships among governments, business, NGOs and private citizens.” “President Clinton is one of the most compelling figures of our time, whose world view and perspective, combined with his uncommon intelligence, making him a singular voice on the world stage,” said HBO CEO Richard Plepler and programming president Michael Lombardo in a joint statement. “This documentary, under Marty’s gifted direction, creates a unique opportunity for the President to reflect on myriad issues that have consumed his attention and passion throughout both his Presidency and post-Presidency.” “I am pleased that legendary director Martin Scorsese and HBO have agreed to this film,” Clinton said in a statement. “I look forward to sharing my perspective on my years as President and my work in the years since with HBO’s audience.” Martin Scorsese collaborated with the 2011 doc George Harrison: Living in the Material World . He’s also worked with the premium network with the documentary Public Speaking (2010) and the series Boardwalk Empire , in which he is an executive producer.

PHOTO: ‘Twilight”s Real Life Jacob Wolf Loving On A Human

The Twilight series’ concept of imprinting ? Still a little weird. But interspecies love never looked so sweet as it does in this special effects reference photo of the real-life Jacob Black getting friendly with a human, the perfect shot of furry adorbs to counteract today’s gruesome Hobbit pony-killing revelations . Effects guru Phil Tippett Tweeted the pic of the affectionate reference wolf used to create Twilight ‘s CG wolf pack today during a VFX Q&A session. Technically I’m not sure which smoldering, shirtless Quileute werewolf this fella was played by onscreen, but if Taylor Lautner was a wolf I’m pretty sure he’d look like this. (I’ll also admit it’s unclear whether or not this is a Christian the Lion -style wolfy kiss or the prelude to a grisly VFX research visit gone very wrong.) Tippett Studios worked on the last four Twilight films, specializing in the wolf CG effects; for Breaking Dawn Part II they also created the scene in which Bella wrestles and devours a cougar. I’d like to see the reference photos they snapped for that . [via @PhilTippett ]

Wait! What? New ID Documentary Contends O.J. Simpson Didn’t Do It

Are the 1994 murders of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman about to get a new, unexpected chapter?  On Monday, the New York Post reported that the ID (as in Investigation Discovery) cable channel will air a documentary titled  My Brother the Serial Killer  that presents evidence that the subject of the film, Glen Rogers , who may have killed as many as 70 to 80 people, is the “likely” killer of the two, not O.J. Simpson , as has been frequently speculated in the media. According to the tabloid’s TV critic, Linda Stasi , Rogers’ family thought he was lying when he told them that he was “partying with a woman in L.A. named Nicole Brown Simpson shortly before she was murdered. A few years after the murders and the white Bronco highway chase that ushered in a worldwide media circus, Rogers, who was on death row for other murders, admitted to a criminal profiler that he’d killed Simpson and Goldman. Stasi writes that receipts that show Rogers had been working construction in the area at the time of the deaths and his knowledge of how the murders were conducted, appear to add to his credibility. Rogers also apparently claims that O.J. didn’t bring any of this information to light when he he was on trial because the former actor and football star had paid the serial killer to break into Ncole’s house and steal a pair of $20,000 earrings he’d given to her.   The Post also reports that Simpson allegedly told Rogers to “kill ‘the bitch’ if necessary.” Shortly after Simpson and Goldman met grisly ends, Rogers went on a cross-country murder rampage. My Brother the Serial Killer debuts on ID on Wednesday night at 9 p.m. Follow Frank DiGiacomo on Twitter. Follow Movieline on Twitter.

Happy 70th Birthday Week, Martin Scorsese! Celebrate With His Finest Scenes

Martin Scorsese turned 70 on Nov. 17, which makes it an ideal time to look at some of the best  cinematic gifts he’s given to the world.  This list could go on well past the eight clips I’ve chosen. For instance, Joe Pesci’s chilling “Do I amuse you in some way?” scene in GoodFellas could easily be included, but I wanted to feature one clip for each of Scorsese’s seven decades (and, in birthday tradition, one to grow on) without repeating any films. 1.   Robert De Niro’s  “You talkin’ to me?” scene in Taxi Driver   (1976) — One of the most quoted, imitated and parodied scenes in the last 50 years of filmmaking.  And look how young Bobby D looks.  2. The Copacabana Steady-cam shot from GoodFellas (1990)   — This shot makes me practically giddy every time I watch it. It’s a beautiful, seamless depiction of how power and influence can be bought and sold on the streets of New York City.

Lord Of The Boarding Gates: New Zealand Wins Awesomest Airport Ever With Ginormous Gollum Installation

Talk about local flavor: Peter Jackson’s WETA pals this week installed a giant Gollum statue inside Wellington, New Zealand’s airport in celebration of the Lord of the Rings franchise’s fruitful connection to the community (and, y’know, Jackson’s upcoming The Hobbit ). Now boarding: precious, MY PRECIOUS ! The 13-meter installation, depicting Gollum fishing for a tasty fish, hangs over the Wellington Airport’s dining lounge and was created by WETA’s own Oscar-winning Richard Taylor, according to TheOneRing.net ; it took three days for crews to erect this humongous, magnificent thing, which gives Tolkien nerds yet another reason to visit beautiful Wellington, NZ. It’s beautiful and awesome and so wonderfully garish all at once. In other words, how hasn’t LAX done something like this already? [Photo: TheOneRing.net] [ TheOneRing.net via FirstShowing ]
