Poll Shows Most Americans Business Have A Right To Deny Gays Via The Grio reports: While finding that Americans narrowly favor allowing gay and lesbian couples to legally marry, a new Associated Press-GfK poll also shows most believe wedding-related businesses should be allowed to deny service to same-sex couples for religious reasons. Roughly half the country also thinks local officials and judges with religious objections ought to be exempt from any requirement that they issue marriage licenses to gay and lesbian couples, according to the poll. That view of the same-sex marriage issue echoes that of the Mormon church. Last week, the church called on state legislatures to pass new laws that protect gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people from discrimination but also to protect the rights of those who assert their religious beliefs. David Kenney, a self-employed Catholic from Novi, Michigan, said he’s fine with same-sex marriage being legal. He’s among the 57 percent of Americans who said wedding-related businesses — such as florists — should be allowed to refuse service if they have an objection rooted in their religion. “Why make an issue out of one florist when there are probably thousands of florists?” asked Kenney, 59. “The gay community wants people to understand their position, but at the same time, they don’t want to understand other people’s religious convictions. It’s a two-way street.” Kenney isn’t alone. About a quarter of those who favor legal same-sex marriage also favor religious exemptions for those who issue marriage licenses, the poll finds, and a third say wedding-related businesses should be allowed to refuse service. Geri Rice, who lives near San Francisco and works in law firm management, strongly favors gay marriage. She’s torn about whether a public official with religious objections should be exempt from issuing a license but says she believes that business owners should be allowed to tell somebody no thanks. “I don’t like it,” Rice said, “but I think they have the right.” Whether a business can refuse service to someone is a matter of federal, state and local law. National gay-rights groups called the idea of trying to carve out religious exemptions in anti-discrimination statues, such as those proposed by leaders of the Mormon church, deeply flawed. James Esseks, who directs the LGBT project of the American Civil Liberties Union, said the First Amendment’s protection of religious freedom “does not give any of us the right to harm others, and that’s what it sounds like the proposal from the Mormon church would do.” The poll found that 44 percent of Americans favor and 39 percent oppose legal same-sex marriage in their own states, while 15 percent expressed no opinion. They need a res-o-lution… Boy Scouts To Allow Gay Youth But Ban Gay Adults After a lengthy decision process, the Boy Scouts of America organization is finally moving towards a potential decision regarding the policy revision of their long-standing ban on gay members. via Chicago Tribune The Boy Scouts of America on Friday proposed lifting a ban on gay scouts but maintaining a prohibition on gay adults from leading troops, a compromise that attempts to end a fight that has split the century-old American institution into bitter factions. Reaction from scouting supporters ranged from outrage to limited approval. The biggest organization in scouts, the Mormon Church, said it was studying the proposal, leaving uncertain the outcome of a May vote by scout leaders that will set policy. Gay rights groups said continuing to bar gay adults was unacceptable, but they welcomed the change for youths. “The general feeling is that this is a bad move,” which could precipitate a major crisis, A.J. Smith, president of the Association of Baptists for Scouting, wrote in a website post, attempting to summarize Baptists’ views. “This is about a concerted effort to bring down a cultural icon. A Massachusetts woman has charged that the former governor pressured her to ignore her doctors’ advice to terminate her pregnancy after she suffered a life-threatening complication – and another woman claims Romney tried to bully her into giving her son up for adoption by threatening her with excommunication from the Mormon Church. Incredibly, when he was running for public office in the ’90s, Romney presented himself as a pro-choice candidate. These days, he says he believes abortion should only be legal in cases of rape, incest or when the mother’s life is in jeopardy. BUT as a bishop in the Mormon Church in the 1980s, Romney’s views were far more rigid and coldhearted, charges Carrel Hilton Sheldon, a woman who was a member of his “ward” (congregation). In 1983, Carrel, already a mother of four, was in her eighth week of pregnancy when she developed a potentially lethal blood clot. She was given an overdose of the blood thinner Heparin, which caused severe internal bleeding and extensive damage to her kidneys. On the verge of needing a transplant, doctors recommended she terminate the pregnancy to save her life. In an exclusive ENQUIRER interview, Carrel’s husband, 68-year-old Garret Sheldon, says that as his wife lay in her hospital bed with her life “in peril,” Romney visited repeatedly to badger her into carrying the child to term. Romney’s behavior prompted his church superior, Harvard-trained physician Dr. Gordon Williams, to intercede. “Even HE believed my wife should terminate her pregnancy!” recalled Garret. “He said to Mitt, ‘Hey, this is threatening her life – back down!’” Carrel later wrote an article about the devastating experience, recalling that Romney – whom she did not originally identify by name – heartlessly told her: “As your bishop, my concern is with the child.” Author Ron Scott also wrote about the incident in his book “Mitt Romney: An Inside Look at the Man and His Politics.” Scott says that after Romney was unable to persuade Carrel to continue her pregnancy, he went to her parents’ house to make his case. “I have never been so upset about anything in my life,” Phil Hilton, Carrel’s father, told Scott, adding that he ordered the young bishop out of his home and was prepared to “throw (Romney) off the porch if he paused for even a second.” In another case the following year, Peggie Hayes had a run-in with Romney that changed the way she viewed both him and the Mormon Church forever. A former baby sitter for Mitt and Ann Romney’s five sons, the now- 52-year-old woman says the GOP candidate had been a father figure and mentor to her during her teen years. “The relationship we had developed made me feel that I could always rely on him during times of adversity,” Peggie told The ENQUIRER in an exclusive interview. “I grew to trust that Mitt would always be there to support me through the toughest of times.” But that all changed in 1984, when Peggie says the young bishop completely shattered what she’d always believed was an “unbreakable bond” between them. At the age of 24, Peggie – who was divorced and raising a 3-year-old daughter alone – learned she was pregnant again. Unwed and scared, she leaned on Mitt and Ann for moral support. But shortly after the birth of her son, Dane, Romney visited Peggie at her home and told her that, because she was raising the newborn without the help of his biological father, the church expected her to give up the baby “so that he could be adopted by a Mormon couple in ‘good standing.’ ” “And if I chose not to give my son up for adoption,” Peggie continued, “Mitt essentially threatened me by saying I would be excommunicated by the church.” Peggie refused to give up her son, who’s now an electrician living in Salt Lake City. A Florida pastor plans a news conference Monday to call on presidential candidate Mitt Romney to renounce his “racist” Mormon faith : The Rev. O’Neal Dozier, senior pastor of The Worldwide Christian Center Church on Pompano Beach, Fla., says Democrats and President Barack Obama would use Romney’s “racist religion as a secret weapon” to attack the Republican in the general election. “The Mormon religion is prejudiced against blacks, Jews and the Native American Indians,” Dozier says in a release previewing the news conference. “These allegations are substantiated and validated by the writings of the former prophets and seers of the Mormon church.” What Dozier’s release doesn’t mention is that he’s a supporter of rival Republican contender Rick Santorum, and, according to news reports, an honorary chairman of his Florida campaign. The Santorum campaign on Friday touted Dozier as one of its conservative leader endorsements. Santorum spoke in January at Dozier’s church, where the senior pastor noted that blacks will not vote for a Mormon because of the LDS faith’s racial history.
