When Hannah Brown first laid eyes on Luke Parker during Monday night’s Bachelorette rose ceremony, her baffled response no doubt reflected the feelings of millions of confused viewers. “Why are you here?” Hannah asked, as she cringed and pulled away from Parker. Luke stammered out an explanation about “closure and clarity” while Brown strongly encouraged him to leave in a tone that vacillated between pleading and demanding. It was a scene familiar to any woman who’s been subjected to the unwanted advances of a strange man — as well as to any woman who’s been stuck in an abusive relationship with a partner who just won’t leave. If Hannah’s words didn’t send the message powerfully enough, then her body language certainly did. And her most important unspoken question was likely directed as much to the show’s producers as it was to Luke — namely, why is this being allowed to happen? After all, Luke had already been kicked off the show at that point. In fact, it was the second time that Parker was dismissed by Hannah and permitted to return. This is not typical — and these are not the rules of the game. Clearly, the show’s producers made the decision to allow Luke back on set, which indicates that they were more concerned with ratings than with Hannah’s safety and emotional well-being. (We’re sure there was security personnel on set, but abuse can take many forms, and we’re not just talking about Hannah’s physical safety.) Three suitors stood by as Luke confronted Hannah, and they’ve taken some flak online for waiting so long to intervene, but in all likelihood, they were restrained by orders from the same producers who allowed Luke back on set. Many viewers were made uncomfortable by the scene, and they made their opinions abundantly clear on social media: “Watching Luke P. has triggered my daughter’s PTSD,” one viewer wrote on Facebook. “His mind games and control issues are exactly the same as her ex-fiance who eventually abused her and put her in the hospital before she could get away from him. “We’ve been talking about him all season and how we hoped Hannah would see through him before she got hurt.” No doubt Luke’s behavior stirred up similar memories and emotions for many, many viewers. He apologized for some of his actions during last night’s Men Tell All interview, but in typical abuser fashion, he also justified many of his lies, manipulations, and acts of intimidation. And now, the question on the minds of many viewers is — to what extent are the show’s producers responsible for allowing all of this to go on for so long? It’s worth noting that a controversy of this nature could not come at a worse time for the series. Just last week, Bachelor franchise creator Mike Fleiss was accused of assaulting his pregnant wife . This comes on the heels of a previous controversy in which Fleiss feuded with Kelly Ripa and made what many believe to be misogynistic comments toward the daytime host. Police in Kuai, Hawaii and an independent ABC legal team are investigating the allegations made by Fleiss’ wife. Depending on the evidence they discover, Fleiss could be imprisoned, or simply fired from the show that made him famous. Of course, it’s also possible that he’ll remain a free man at the helm of one of the longest-running reality show’s on TV. Whatever the case, Bachelor Nation may soon find itself with a major image problem — and the powers that be would do well to address these issues sooner rather than later. Smollett sat down with Robin Roberts of Good Morning America for his first interview detailing his attack last month. He said he was in the middle of picking up some food from Subway in Chicago and was on the phone with his manager when someone called him a racist and homophobic slur. Jussie said a guy in a mask then punched him screaming “This MAGA country ni**er,” and Jussie punched him back, which resulted in a short scuffle outside. He said a second unknown guy jumped in, kicking Jussie in his back. In the interview with Robin, Jussie also addressed the doubters who might’ve thought he was lying about the whole incident: “I have to acknowledge the lies, and the hate. And it feels like if I had said it was a Muslim, or a Mexican, or someone black, I feel like the doubters would have supported me much more. A lot more. And that says a lot about the place that we are in our country right now… It’s not necessarily that you don’t believe that this is the truth, you don’t even want to see the truth. Smollett, who portrays the openly gay musician Jamal on Empire , said he suffered injuries to his clavicle bone and ribs during the attack. However, some still questioned his story: “For me, the main thing was the idea that I somehow switched up my story, you know? And that somehow maybe I added a little extra trinket, you know, of the MAGA thing,” Smollett said. “I didn’t need to add anything like that. They called me a f—-, they called me a n—-. There’s no which way you cut it. I don’t need some MAGA hat as the cherry on top of some racist sundae.” Jussie also addressed rumors that he was in the middle of a late night love visit when he got attacked. “I’ve heard that it was a date gone bad, which I also resent that narrative,” he said. “I’m not gonna go out and get a tuna sandwich and a salad to meet somebody. That’s ridiculous. And it’s offensive.” Jussie was actually hanging with his friend and creative director Frank Gatson in an apartment, and they got hungry, which prompted the Subway visit. Smollett said the only reports he heard that were inaccurate were the ones claiming the attackers were wearing MAGA hats, which they weren’t. Smollett also explained why he was initially reluctant to hand over his phone to the police: “They wanted me to give my phone to the tech for three to four hours. I’m sorry but — I’m not gonna do that. Because I have private pictures and videos and numbers: my partner’s number, my family’s number, my castmate’s number, my friends’ numbers, my private emails, my private songs, my private voice memos.” Jussie didn’t even want to call the police at first, but Gatson did it on his behalf. When the cops arrived, they said they found Smollett in his apartment with stained clothing and a “white rope draped around” his neck, according to the report. “I was looking at myself, just like checking myself out. I saw the bruise on my neck, you know, like the little — the rope burn around my neck,” he said. “So when the police came I kept the clothes on, I kept the rope on me. … I mean, it wasn’t, like, wrapped around. But, yeah, it was around because I wanted them to see.” Jussie said he believes the photos released of the two possible suspects are accurate. He’s hopeful that the police will track the culprits down, and he hopes his story will inspire other marginalized groups: “I think people need to hear the truth,” Jussie said. “Cause everybody has their own idea. It took a while, but Mexican cartel leader Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán Loera was convicted today (Feb. 12) in a Brooklyn federal district court of multiple crimes including operating a continuing criminal enterprise and multiple charges of conspiracy to import and distribute cocaine, heroin and marijuana. He was found guilty of all the charges he was facing. El Chapo is also infamous for escaping not one but two supermax prisons in Mexico. But don’t expect such finesse stateside. Reports the New York Times : The guilty verdict against the kingpin, whose real name is Joaquín Guzmán Loera, ended the career of a legendary outlaw who also served as a dark folk hero in Mexico, notorious for his innovative smuggling tactics, his violence against competitors, his storied prison breaks and his nearly unstoppable ability to evade the Mexican authorities. The jury’s decision came more than a week after the panel started deliberations at the trial in Federal District Court in Brooklyn where prosecutors presented a mountain of evidence against the cartel leader, including testimony from 56 witnesses, 14 of whom once worked with Mr. Guzmán. He faces life in prison at his sentencing. Needless to say, the trial was bananas. Case in point: At times, the trial was so bizarre it felt like a drug-world telenovela unfolding live in the courtroom. Last month, one of Mr. Guzmán’s mistresses tearfully proclaimed her love for him even as she testified against him from the stand. The following day, in what seemed like a coordinated show of solidarity, the kingpin and his wife, Emma Coronel Aispuro, appeared in court in matching red velvet smoking jackets. Toward the end of the proceeding, Alejandro Edda, an actor who plays El Chapo on the Netflix series “Narcos: Mexico,” showed up at the trial to study Mr. Guzmán. The crime lord flashed an ecstatic smile when told Mr. Edda had come to see him. El Chapo is accused of making a whopping $14 billion during his run. Afterward, Sheck Wes took Twitter to deny putting hands on any woman. Skye saw his denial, and doubled down on her accusations.
