Gwyneth Paltrow To Duet With Matthew Morrison On His Debut Album

The ‘Country Strong’ star and the ‘Glee’ actor have recorded a version of ‘Over the Rainbow’ for his upcoming release. By Aly Semigran Gwyneth Paltrow and Matt Morrison Photo: GETTY/ Michael Tran Holly Holliday will be making sweet music with Will Schuester once more. Translating from Gleek speak, Oscar-winning-actress-turned-singing-staple Gwyneth Paltrow will be crooning yet another number with Matthew Morrison. Entertainment Weekly reports that Paltrow will appear on Morrison’s upcoming solo album, which is due out on May 10. On “Glee,” recurring guest Paltrow — who plays flaky substitute teacher Holliday — has covered Fleetwood Mac’s “Landslide,” Cee Lo Green’s “Forget You” and Prince’s “Kiss,” the latter of which she performed with Morrison’s Mr. Schue. Now, the Golden Globe-nominated Morrison is having the “Country Strong” star help him out on his debut record, on a tune that’s become almost synonymous with his “Glee” character: “Over the Rainbow.” As Morrison told EW, “People kind of know me for that song now.” The Broadway-trained actor not only used the timeless “Wizard of Oz” number for his “Glee” audition, but also sang it with co-star Mark Salling (who released his own solo effort, Pipe Dreams , in 2010) during the season 1 finale — both times accompanying himself on ukulele. “I wanted to do a duet with a female. I thought that was a good song to do, and we really did a different arrangement of it,” Morrison explained about the version he recorded for his album. “It’s a lot of strings, and it’s beautiful.” Morrison admitted that he felt nervous about approaching Paltrow to see if she’d participate in the recording. “The hardest part of doing this album was asking these people favors, like Elton [John] and her,” he said. “I’m so not that guy.” In addition to Paltrow and John, Morrison also has ‘NSYNC member JC Chasez lined up for a duet on a song titled “Dancing in the Rain.” While there’s no word yet on who, if any, of his “Glee” castmates will appear on the record — both had championed to get their own duets on the album — co-star Jenna Ushkowitz has already been singing its praises . Ushkowitz, who plays glee-club member Tina Cohen-Chang on the show, told MTV News on the red carpet of the Screen Actors Guild Awards in January, “His music is really great.” She went on to say that Morrison “made his own sound” on the album, while adding that it was “a little bit of Justin Timberlake … [and] symphonic-sounding.” Morrison has yet to announce a title for album, though the actor did reveal to MTV News at Clive Davis’ post-Grammy bash in February that ” My Name ” has been considered as a possibility. Dave Grohl Talks Reuniting With Nirvana Bandmate, Producer

‘It sounded great and it felt natural,’ he tells MTV News of teaming up with Krist Novoselic and Butch Vig for Foo Fighters LP. By Aly Semigran, with reporting by James Montgomery Dave Grohl Photo: MTV News It was a moment any hard-core Nirvana fan would have loved to be a fly on the wall for. While recording the upcoming Foo Fighters album , a hard-rocking, back-to-basics record titled Wasting Light, Dave Grohl reunited with his former Nirvana bandmate Krist Novoselic and Butch Vig, the producer of their incomparable Nevermind. Vig is once again working as Grohl’s producer on the upcoming Foo effort, while Novoselic appears on a track called “I Should Have Known.” At music executive Clive Davis’ annual pre-Grammy party this weekend, MTV News asked Grohl what it was like to reconnect with Vig and Novoselic, two men who significantly impacted both his professional and personal life. “The three of us haven’t been in a studio together since 1991,” Grohl revealed. And in spite of the years apart, the trio easily found their rhythm again as they recorded in Grohl’s home studio. “Musically, it sounded great and it felt natural,” Grohl added. But the Foo Fighters frontman said it wasn’t so much their enduring chemistry that he was moved by as the chance to revisit relationships that now span more than two decades. “As friends, that’s a real connection,” Grohl told us. “It had more to do with us as people than even the record.” When asked if they felt nostalgic during the recording process, Grohl replied with a smile, “Too much. We didn’t have enough time.” Just last month, MTV News caught up with Vig to discuss the venture with Grohl and Novoselic, and he shared similar sentiments about working with his buddies again. “When Krist came up to Dave’s house, we sort of sat down and it was like, ‘Holy sh–, man, we hadn’t been in a room together — the three of us — in almost 20 years,” he said. After recording Novoselic’s portions of “I Should Have Known” — Vig described the song as “an emotional roller coaster” — the producer and his old friends made the best of lost time. “We just sat around and shot the sh– for three or four hours,” Vig recalled. “One story would lead to another story, and it was an amazing experience, just to be there, to open up all these things you may have forgotten about. It was really a pretty special part of the album.” Wasting Light is set to be released on April 12. What do you think the new Foo Fighters album will sound like? Tell us in the comments! Gwyneth Paltrow Will Tango To Prince’s ‘Kiss’ On ‘Glee’

Matthew Morrison also reveals a potential title for his solo debut album: My Name. By Aly Semigran Matthew Morrison and Gwyneth Paltrow appear on a previous episode of “Glee” Photo: Fox Step aside, Cee Lo Green (and puppets!) — Matthew Morrison has moved in on Gwyneth Paltrow for a “Glee” duet that will dare to rival the Oscar-winner’s show-stopping “Forget You” performance with the feathery singer at the Grammy Awards on Sunday. Morrison stopped to chat with MTV News at Clive Davis’ post-Grammy party about Paltrow’s upcoming return to “Glee” as spacey substitute teacher (not to mention Mr. Schuester’s future love interest), Holly Holliday. And it certainly seems as though the folks at “Glee” don’t plan to squander Paltrow’s newest knack for bringing the funk. “Gwyneth and I just did ‘Kiss’ by Prince,” Morrison revealed. Perhaps upping the ante from their memorable, albeit soaked, “Singin’ in the Rain”/ “Umbrella” mash-up, Morrison also divulged that he and Paltrow are doing Prince’s 1986 classic “as a tango.” Morrison could only find one way to describe the upcoming number: “It’s pretty awesome.” While Morrison is certain of his work with Paltrow, there’s one upcoming musical venture he’s still a little fuzzy with the details on: his debut solo album. The Golden Globe-nominated actor confirmed that the record (which “Glee” co-star Jenna Ushkowitz has described as sounding like “a little bit of Justin Timberlake”) is slated to drop in May, but he still doesn’t have a title for it. After reluctantly sharing that one of the possible titles that could be used is My Name (“There’s a song I wrote called ‘My Name’ that’s a good one,” he told us), Morrison joked that he would name his solo effort the rather unappealing-sounding Moist. Following a hearty laugh, Morrison said of the terrible title, “That’s like the worst word I could ever think of.” What do you think Morrison should name his solo album? Let us know in the comments! ‘Glee’ Co-Star Says Matthew Morrison Compares Debut To Justin Timberlake

Jenna Ushkowitz says her castmate also calls it ‘symphonic-sounding.’ By Aly Semigran, with reporting by Kara Warner Matthew Morrison Photo: Getty Images Justin Timberlake might have been attending the 17th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards as an acting nominee (along with his “The Social Network” ensemble), but it looks like he might also have some competition in his other field: Music. “Glee” star Matthew Morrison is getting ready to turn out his debut solo record and said he might be poised to give Timberlake a run for his money. Jenna Ushkowitz, who was nominated along with her “Glee” co-stars for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series, revealed to MTV News she’s already had a listen to Morrison’s latest effort. Ushkowitz saw Morrison perform a few of his new songs at The Grove in Los Angeles over the weekend, saying, “He was amazing. “We’re really proud of him,” she said on behalf of her fellow “Glee”-mates, adding, “His music is really great.” While Ushkowitz said she thought Morrison “made his own sound,” her onscreen teacher had his own definition of it: “He says it’s a little bit of Justin Timberlake … [and] symphonic-sounding.” It wasn’t the only time JT’s name came out of the lips of “Glee” stars on the SAG red carpet. Heather Morris told MTV News, “I think his music might be coming to our show.” After coyly hinting that “maybe” Timberlake’s tunes would be featured, she then indulged fans with the news that, “It’s a mash-up.” Meanwhile, “Glee” actor/dancer Harry Shum Jr. made a plea to Timberlake to come back to the musical forefront. Shum echoed many fans when he said, “It’s been awhile since we’ve seen Justin Timberlake with his music videos, so please, come back Justin. We wanna see some new stuff!” Still, Shum promises that while Timberlake weighs his options, “Glee” can tide his fans over by paying homage to “Justin moves and Justin songs” on their show.
