Cortez Kennedy Dies; NFL Hall of Famer Was 48

Cortez Kennedy, the former NFL defensive lineman who spent ten years with the Seattle Seahawks, has passed away at the age of 48. His cause of death remains unknown. Kennedy passed away in Orlando, and officials say they’re currently investigating the matter. A spokesperson for the Orlando Police Department says there’s no reason to suspect foul play, and Kennedy’s death appears to have resulted from natural causes. Drafted third overall in the 1990 draft, Kennedy spent the entirety of his stellar career with the Seahawks. During his decade in the league, Kennedy was selected for the Pro Bowl an impressive eight times. In 1992, he recorded 14 sacks and was named NFL Defensive Player of the Year by the Associated Press. Kennedy sat out the 2001 season due to injury and announced his retirement from football in 2002. He received numerous offers from other teams, but stated that he wished to finish his career with the team that had given him his start. Kennedy was voted into the NFL Hall of Fame in 2012, and with a look at his career stats, it’s not hard to see why: In 167 games with Seattle, he recorded 668 tackles, 58 sacks, and 3 interceptions. In the minutes after news of Kennedy’s death went public, Kennedy instantly became a trending topic on social media, with some of the biggest names to ever play the game playing tribute: “Really sad to lose a guy like Cortez Kennedy,” tweeted John Elway. “A great personality, a great player & I enjoyed competing against him. Prayers to his family.” “R.I.P Cortez Kennedy… Gone way too early. Thanks for always sharing knowledge to a young buck like me,” wrote fellow University of Miami alum Reggie Wayne. While some of the online tributes are from teammates and some from opponents, there’s little variation in the message: Cortez Kennedy was one of a kind on the field and off, and his tremendous talent was matched only by his enormous heart. Our thoughts go out to Kennedy’s family during this difficult time. View Slideshow: Celebrities Who Died in 2017: In Memoriam

Stop The Violence: Black Female Orlando Cop Shot And Killed At Orlando Walmart

Black Orlando Officer Killed Trying To Apprehend Murder Suspect People got life f**ked up . The police have brought us a LOT of heartache and pain recently, but murdering innocent cops isn’t about to solve the problems that face our community and the nation at large. According to ABCNews , a sista who wears the badge and blue has been killed down in Orlando by a crazed gunman. Master Sgt. Debra Clayton, a wife and mother, was alone at around 7 a.m. when she tried to contact a murder suspect near a Walmart, police said. She was shot multiple times, police said, and later died. Police identified her suspected killer as Markeith Loyd, and said he is also wanted as a suspect in the murder of a pregnant woman. Authorities said Loyd is known to officers and is considered dangerous. THIS is how we know and remember Sergeant Debra Clayton. She always had a smile for kids and always took a moment to interact w/community. pic.twitter.com/8zL46iyUe6 — Orlando Police (@OrlandoPolice) January 9, 2017 Stating it plainly, Orlando Police Chief John Mina had this to say about Officer Clayton’s killer: “We are going to bring this dirtbag to justice” Sgt. Clayton was extremely active with @pkzorlando . She loved working with kids and they loved her too! Rest peacefully, Sarge. pic.twitter.com/Xfpm4ctiqP — Orlando Police (@OrlandoPolice) January 9, 2017 Sgt. Clayton was not the only officer who lost their life today as a result of this incident: A second law enforcement officer, a motorcycle officer from the Orange County Sheriff’s office, was also killed in the line of duty while responding to the Walmart shooting this morning, authorities said. The officer was struck by a motorist and killed, the sheriff’s office said. His identity was not immediately released. Tragic irony: The deaths of OPD Sgt Clayton & OCSO Deputy occurred on #lawenforcement appreciation day We are still committed to your safety pic.twitter.com/IZ1ullEJo8 — Orlando Police (@OrlandoPolice) January 9, 2017 R.I.P. to both officers. Hopefully the Orlando P.D. will apprehend the suspect as tips are said to be pouring in suggesting that the gunman is still lurking in the area. Image via Orlando Police Dept.

Jesus Take The Guns Wheel: 16-Year-Old Florida Boy Mistakenly Shoots And Kills 12-Year-Old Brother Thinking He Was An Intruder

This is so sad. According to WFTV: Police said a teen mistakenly sho t his 12-year-old brother, killing him, inside their Lake Nona home Friday afternoon. The shooting happened on Portafino Drive in the Nona Crest Subdivision in Orange County. According to investigators, the shooting was accidental. Authorities said the two brothers were home alone, when the older boy feared an intruder was inside the house and grabbed a gun. “He heard some noises and he called out for his brother and he didn’t answer and so then his brother startled him,” said Orlando Police Department Detective Mike Moreschi. Detectives said the 16-year-old shot and struck his brother, then realized the tragic mistake and called 911. A police spokesman said the 12-year-old was taken to Arnold Palmer Hospital where he died. “He’s devastated, obviously. His parents are devastated by what happened and it’s just a really bad situation for the family,” Moreschi said. Police said the 16-year-old won’t be charged in the shooting, but the State Attorney’s office will review the case to look for possible negligence. The gun was legally owned. It’s unclear where the gun was located inside the home or if it was locked up. Crime scene investigators were on scene Friday night to process the house. Neighbors said the family has lived in the neighborhood for less than a year. “My heart goes out to the family and I will keep them in my prayers,” said Ikwueme. This is why parents who keep guns in their homes need to take the proper precautions to prevent accidents like this from happening. WFTV
