The Trailer for Oscar Frontrunner The King’s Speech Doesn’t Stutter

The last two films to win the Audience Award at the Toronto International Film Festival were Precious and Slumdog Millionaire , so do your best to feign surprise when 2010 winner The King’s Speech winds up on the list of Best Picture nominees next year. If recent history still has you unconvinced of The King’s Speech Oscar bona fides, however, the first trailer for the film will do its best to change your mind.

Oscar Darling Natalie Portman Tweaked, Tucked in Revised Black Swan Poster

That striking, haunting poster for Black Swan — featuring a wing-eyed, facepainted, selectively focused Natalie Portman — has been revised just in time for the long Oscar haul to come. You could expect nothing less from the micromanaging marketers at Fox Searchlight, especially after the lightning strike of Oscar hype that greeted Black Swan ‘s premiere this week in Venice. So if you bet “yes” in yesterday’s poll of whether or not Jean-Luc Godard would personally accept his honorary Oscar at this fall’s Governors Awards, things aren’t looking good for you. Honorary Oscars Announced: Will Jean-Luc Godard Personally Accept His?

Congratulations to filmmakers Francis Ford Coppola and Jean-Luc Godard, actor Eli Wallach, and film historian and preservationist Kevin Brownlow on their imminent recognition at this year’s Academy Governors Awards. They deserve it, but at least in Godard’s case, will the French New Wave pioneer — who historically sniffs at prizes and couldn’t even be bothered to attend his latest film’s Cannes premiere — even show up to accept?
