‘Hunger Games’ Star Josh Hutcherson Doesn’t ‘Play It Cool’ Like Peeta

‘Peeta has a hard time saying how he feels to women. I have the opposite problem,’ Hutcherson tells MTV News. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Josh Hutcherson Photo: MTV News For the Josh Hutcherson fans out there who have been onboard with his “Hunger Games” casting in the role of Peeta Mellark since the beginning, you’re clearly on the same page as the actor himself, who has told us several times that he feels such a connection to Peeta that it “hurts.” “I feel like so much of who I am is Peeta,” Hutcherson told MTV News recently . “It drove me crazy during the audition process, because I was like, ‘This is so me, it hurts. If I don’t get this, I’m not even good at being me, so now what am I? I have no idea what to do next.’ ” And when we caught up with the young man behind the boy with the bread during the film’s press day, we asked if there was anything he and Peeta don’t have in common. “Peeta has a hard time saying how he feels to women. I have the opposite problem,” Hutcherson admitted. “I say it too soon, so we’re different in that respect. But, honestly, we’re very similar in so many ways it’s kind of hard to pick out the difference.” When asked whether his upfront approach in revealing his feelings too soon works in his favor, the “Journey 2” actor had no problem admitting defeat. “Not at all,” he said of his method’s effectiveness. “I think I should probably adopt more of Peeta’s strategy and maybe play it cool a little longer.” As those of us who have read Suzanne Collins’ books well know, however, that Peeta doesn’t play it cool for very long. Once he admits his feelings for Katniss, his affection does not waver at all. “Well, it’s borderline obsessed and that’s never good to be obsessed with anything really, but I think that he’s just that in love,” Hutcherson said in reference to his character’s attachment to Katniss. “He can’t help himself; he’s just head-over-heels and hopelessly in love.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Hunger Games.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . New Hunger Games Poster: Beyond Hungerdome

Finally, a Hunger Games poster that reminds us of the carnage and calamity that made the books so addictive. Here, Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) stands before a packed stadium while her adversary Peeta Mellark’s (Josh Hutcherson) image flies above the crowd. Yes, this is the poster that Lionsgate asked Twitter uses to assemble from jigsaw clues — and it appears that @johnshoward is the one who pulled through. Pretty epic thunderdome. Katniss and Peeta are the new 2pac and Dre.

‘Hunger Games’ Role Is ‘So Right’ For Josh Hutcherson

‘I had never read a character that was more like who I am as a person,’ he tells MTV News of playing Peeta. By Kara Warner Josh Hutcherson in “The Hunger Games” Photo: Lionsgate All right, “Hunger Games” fans, are you ready for a little exclusive interview with soon-to-be superstar Josh Hutcherson? We’ve been hinting about it ever since we named Hutcherson “Most Likely to Play a Superhero” as part of our New Class , and the time has finally come to unveil this nifty bit of footage that will have you convinced (if you weren’t already) he’s one to watch in 2012. For those unfamiliar with the talented 18-year-old, he made a splash in Hollywood last year with his buzzed-about performance in the award-season darling “The Kids Are All Right,” and now he’s embodying the pivotal and beloved role of Peeta Mellark in the highly anticipated big-screen adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ dystopian best-seller “The Hunger Games.” MTV News was very lucky to catch up with Hutcherson recently, when he discussed the importance of landing the role, what Peeta means to him and his favorite scene to film. MTV News : Talk to us about what the role of Peeta means to you and why you love him. Josh Hutcherson : It’s so crazy. When I read the books, I had never read a character that was more like who I am as a person and had kind of my core values and what I believe in. So it kind of drove me crazy in a way, because I felt like I was so right for it, then I had to go through this crazy audition process. So to finally be making the movie and now we’re finished, it’s like, somebody please pinch me, because I still don’t believe this is actually happening. For me, it’s just an honor to be a part of such a great story. Gary Ross is such an amazing director, and Jennifer Lawrence is perfect, and everyone else we cast was really great. MTV : What was the audition process like? Did you do specific scene work? Hutcherson : For the audition process, I came in the first time and read a few scenes for Gary Ross and [author] Suzanne Collins and some of the other producers involved. Then maybe about a week or so, maybe two weeks later, I came in and did a screen test with Jennifer, where I actually read the scenes with her so they could see how the chemistry worked. Both of them felt really great, but as an actor, you just pick apart every single thing that you do, so for me, I was on pins and needles waiting to find out. And then when I finally found out, my jaw hit the floor. I was so excited. MTV : What were your favorite scenes to film? Hutcherson : It’s very similar to the book. Probably my favorite scenes are all the scenes with myself and Katniss in the cave, because they’re really emotional and you get to see a lot of their relationship develop there, so for me as an actor, I liked that a lot. And then of course all the physical running through the forest — that was really fun as well. MTV : Did you guys get a lot of bumps and bruises from all that stunt work? Hutcherson : There were tons of bumps and bruises, yeah. It was pretty intense. Ryan Leslie Says ‘You Be Killin’ ‘Em 2’ Is An ‘Event’

R. Les tells MTV News ‘supergroup’ partners Fabolous, Ne-Yo bless remix, ‘Look at Her,’ with peek at what’s to come. By Rebecca Thomas Ryan Leslie Photo: MTV News NEW YORK — For any girl who takes her style seriously — like, blow the rent on a striped concoction from Prada’s spring/summer 2011 collection serious — 2010 was a good year for primpin’-ain’t-easy rap. Big, tag-flaunting singles like Drake’s “Fancy” and Rick Ross’ “Super High” expressed shock, awe and appreciation for girls and their fashion. And, for coining the word “shoe-icide” alone, the Ryan Leslie-produced Fabolous single “You Be Killin’ ‘Em” earned monster status on that playlist. Now, Leslie is aiming to follow up the radio smash with another heater. We ventured downtown last week and caught up with R.Les just before he headed out for his Coachella festival debut. He gave us a preview of Les Is More, his first post-Universal, indie release due July 4, teased his much-discussed supergroup and let us in on “You Be Killin’ ‘Em” — the sequel. “We just did a ‘You Be Killin’ ‘Em,’ part 2 called

‘Hunger Games’ Eyeing Elizabeth Banks For Effie Trinket

The ’30 Rock’ actress reportedly is in talks to play the escort who helps Katniss and Peeta on their dangerous journey. By Eric Ditzian Elizabeth Banks Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images The “Hunger Games” gang is multiplying every day, so it seems. Following the news that Hollywood newcomers Dayo Okeniyi and Amandla Stenberg have been cast as District 11 tributes Thresh and Rue , Variety brings word that a more familiar face is close to joining the production. Elizabeth Banks is in talks to star as Effie Trinket in the adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ best-selling young-adult novel, the trade magazine reports. A pink-haired escort to District 12’s Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark, Effie accompanies the kids on their fight-to-the-death journey. A rep for Lionsgate declined to confirm the report, but said the studio hoped to have official news soon. A representative for Banks could not be reached as of press time. The 37-year-old Banks last appeared onscreen opposite Russell Crowe in the blink-and-you-missed-it thriller “The Next Three Days,” and has a recurring role on NBC’s “30 Rock.” She’ll next be seen alongside Paul Rudd in the comedy “Our Idiot Brother.” While we await official word of the Banks casting, we already know that much of the cast is in place. Katniss and Peeta have already been nailed down, with Jennifer Lawrence stepping in to play lead female Katniss and Josh Hutcherson portraying her Hunger Games partner, respectively. Liam Hemsworth is set to become Gale Hawthorne, Peeta’s best friend. Directed by Gary Ross and scripted by Billy Ray, “The Hunger Games,” the first movie in a planned trilogy based on Collins’ books, is expected to shift into production later this year. The film is slated to be released on March 23, 2012. ‘Hunger Games’ Experts Weigh In On Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth

‘I think we were a little bit shocked,’ the Hob’s Amanda Belcher tells MTV News. By Amy Wilkinson Josh Hutcherson Photo: Alberto E. Rodriguez/ Getty Images Casting for the most anticipated love triangle since Edward, Bella and Jacob is now complete. On Monday, Lionsgate announced that Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth would star as Peeta Mellark and Gale Hawthorne alongside Jennifer Lawrence’s Katniss Everdeen in the big-screen adaptation of “The Hunger Games.” The news came on the heels of rumors that the two were front-runners among the pack of Hollywood’s young men auditioning for the coveted roles. Yet, despite a bit of early warning, “Hunger Games” fans and experts alike were largely surprised by the casting news. “I think we were a little bit shocked, especially when the rumors first broke last week that Josh and Liam were the front-runners,” said Amanda Belcher of the Hob . “We hadn’t really expected that out of all the people that were listed on the short list of people for both Peeta and Gale.” Fan reactions have ranged from pleased (@The SiennaSkye: “Josh Hutcherson was cast as Peeta Mellark!? YES! They picked a cutie!! (:”) to outraged (@meggiedear: “Worst. Casting. News. Ever. [Especially 4 Gale]. R.I.P. Hunger Games movie”). Yet, Belcher said many initially wary fans have changed their tune since the news first sent the Internet ablaze. “Surprisingly, I feel like when the official news got posted, they’ve come around a little bit,” she said. “There’s still quite a few who say, ‘I’m not going to watch this movie. I’m so upset at this casting.’ Then there’s a lot of them that say, ‘You know what? These aren’t our first choices, and we don’t really like them, but we’re going to put our trust in Lionsgate.’ ” One of the chief concerns among fans seems to be that Hutcherson and Hemsworth don’t closely resemble the characters from the book — an issue that was also raised following Lawrence’s casting. “I have a hard time picturing Josh and Liam as Peeta and Gale, but I want to give them the benefit of the doubt,” said “Hunger Games” Examiner Sara Gundell. Mockingjay.net administrator Kimmy West said most fans stuck on the actors’ looks will most likely get onboard once they see the stars’ chemistry and performances for themselves. “[The actors] have to prove to the fans that they’re the good person for the role. Because the moment that people realize that these actors are perfect in the role, hopefully then all the fans will warm up to them and agree that they are good.” What do you think of the Josh Hutcherson/ Liam Hemsworth casting news? Dr. Conrad Murray Implies Michael Jackson Killed Himself, Cites Broken Syringe as Potential Proof

In a major development in the Michael Jackson case, lawyers for Dr. Conrad Murray want to see prints from broken syringe found in the late icon’s bedroom. Sources say they think this item may prove Michael Jackson killed himself, a long-held defense theory that has been floated but not aggressively pursued until now. Dr. Murray’s lawyers are looking to obtain a first generation fingerprint to determine who was handling it. Murray is adamant that he never touched the thing. Murray is charged with involuntary manslaughter in MJ’s June 25, 2009 death . Whether he injected or even chugged Propofol , the defense believes MJ suffered a massive overdose of the anesthetic while Murray was out of the room. Defense sources insist that there were only two people in the room at the time (they likely tried to pursue the missing surveillance tape to back this up). Since Murray did not break the syringe, Michael must have. Or so they claim. The defense is asking the FBI to deliver the first generation fingerprint. You buying it? Tell us: Dr. Conrad Murray is …

The Hunger Games Casting Update: Hunter Parrish as Peeta Mellark?

Has The Hunger Games found its Peeta Mellark? Sources tell E! News that Weeds star Hunter Parrish is in serious negotiations to take on the male lead in this anticipated movie franchise. He confirmed to the site last night that he has “met the producers” and would be “grateful” for the opportunity. Parrish hasn’t seen a script for the film based on Suzanne Collins’ bestselling novel trilogy yet, but it’s one of the most sought after roles in Hollywood. (Alex Pettyfer is also under consideration to play Peeta.) Jennifer Lawrence is the leading contender to portray Katniss Everdeen. Said Parrish of the outpouring of support he’s received on Twitter: “You don’t get much better than that. The true fans of the book. So regardless of whether I’m a part of the film or not, I feel honored to just sort of be thought of.” What do you think? Would this 23-year star be a good fit as Mellark? [Photo: WENN.com]
