Exclusive: Extraordinary AIDS Activism Doc How To Survive A Plague Unleashes Poster

How to Survive a Plague turned on the water-works and other outpourings of emotion when it debuted at Sundance earlier this year. Its subjects, the driving-forces behind AIDS activist groups ACT-Up (the AIDS Coalition To Unleash Power) and TAG (Treatment Action Group), took matters into their own hands against a massive tide of fear, discrimination and government failure to deal with the disease that ravaged the gay community in the ’80s and ’90s. Director David France profiles the heroes of the movement who moved the needle in forging treatment and official recognition against extraordinary odds, and today Movieline has your first look at the official poster. Sundance Selects will debut the feature September 21st following the film’s healthy festival run to date. Below, find the poster designed by Sam Smyth and the trailer along with the official synopsis: How to Survive a Plague is the story of the brave young men and women who successfully reversed the tide of an epidemic, demanded the attention of a fearful nation and stopped AIDS from becoming a death sentence. This improbable group of activists bucked oppression and, with no scientific training, infiltrated government agencies and the pharmaceutical industry, helping to identify promising new medication and treatments and move them through trials and into drugstores in record time. In the process, they saved their own lives and ended the darkest days of a veritable plague, while virtually emptying AIDS wards in American hospitals in the process. The powerful story of their fight is a classic tale of empowerment and activism that has since inspired movements for change in everything from breast cancer research to Occupy Wall Street. Their story stands as a powerful inspiration to future generations, a road map, and a call to arms. This is how you change the world. Official Selection: Sundance Film Festival, New Directors/New films, San Francisco International Film Festival, Provincetown International Film Festival, Outfest Documentary Centerpiece, Seattle International Film Festival. For The Ladies: History Will Be Made In 2012 When 18 Women Are CEO’s Of Fortune 500 Companies!

Girls! Who run this mutha-?!? It’s been a hundred years and zero women have held the top position at IBM but all that will change when Virginia “Ginny” Rometty takes the reins as CEO of the technology company. Rometty will join a list that includes Meg Whitman, the former eBay CEO, who was named as CEO of Hewlett-Packard in September. The moves will make two women the head of two of the top tech companies. “Ginni’s long-term strategic thinking and client focus are seen in our growth initiatives, from cloud computing and analytics to the commercialization of Watson. She brings to the role of CEO a unique combination of vision, client focus, unrelenting drive, and passion for IBMers and the company’s future. I know the board agrees with me that Ginni is the ideal CEO to lead IBM into its second century,” outgoing CEO Sam Palmisano said in a statement. The 54-year-old strategic thinker will begin her role at the top on Jan. 1. And, on the same day next year, over at Mylan Inc., Heather Bresch will take on her new role of CEO at the pharmaceutical company. The three appointments in the last few weeks will help boost the amount of women CEOs to record numbers. According to USA Today, only 16 women have headed up Fortune 500 companies at the same time. But, pending no shakeups before the New Year, the total number of women leading Fortune 500 companies will rise to 18. Play on playas!! FDA Pulls Approval On Cancer Drug Avastin

Continue reading here:

The controversial cancer drug Avastin becomes the focus of U.S. regulators’ attention again Tuesday during a two-day hearing to determine if the medication can keep its FDA approval for the treatment of metastatic breast cancer. Easy Ways To Drop 5 Pounds By Summer Back on Dec. 16, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration recommended revoking approval of the drug to fight breast cancer, citing the medication’s poor performance in follow-up studies and its potential for serious side effects. The drug’s maker, Genentech, now owned by the pharmaceutical giant Roche, was given the chance to appeal the FDA recommendation and present additional evidence. That appeal will be the focus of the hearing and, according to published reports, will involve Genentech urging one more clinical trial before any government action on the drug. Tips For Healthy Vascular Living The FDA’s unusual step of scheduling another hearing on the drug underscores the difficulty of withdrawing approval of a cancer medication.

Researchers Ditch Toxic Nanoparticle Chemicals for Delicious Cinnamon

Nanoparticles these days are quietly being slipped into products and processes as diverse as electronics, healthcare products (like sunscreen), and pharmaceuticals to fight cancer. http://www.dailytech.com/Arsenic+Nanoparticle+Fights+Breast+Cancer/article19058…. But for all that promise, there's a dark side. In order to make nanoparticles like tiny gold nanoparticles( http://www.dailytech.com/Gold+Nanoparticles+Dont+Just+Look+Pretty+They+Fight+Can… ) or titanium dioxide nanoparticles, caustic chemicals frequently are required. Scientists are concerned that minute quantities of those chemicals could harm the human body( http://www.dailytech.com/Nanotech+the+New+Asbestos+Carbon+Nanotube+Toxicity/arti… ), causing cancer or other diseases. But a University of Missouri research team, led by MU Physics and Radiology Professor Kattesh Katti thinks they have a solution — cinnamon. The team mixed gold salts in water with cinnamon and discovered that they remarkably formed nanoparticles. Typically such particles form only when exposed to an electric field or when toxic chemicals are added to the mix. Fellow radiology professor Raghuraman Kannan, who participated in the study, comments, “The procedure we have developed is non-toxic. No chemicals are used in the generation of gold nanoparticles, except gold salts. It is a true 'green' process.” Professor Katti adds, “From our work in green nanotechnology, it is clear that cinnamon — and other species such as herbs, leaves and seeds — will serve as a reservoir of phytochemicals and has the capability to convert metals into nanoparticles. Therefore, our approach to 'green' nanotechnology creates a renaissance symbolizing the indispensable role of Mother Nature in all future nanotechnological developments.” More serendipitous yet, the cinammon nanoparticles were found to release phytochemicals found in cinnamon debris. These phytochemicals have been shown to kill or reduce the growth of certain types of cancer cells. So not only are these particles non-toxic, but they also fight cancer. Professor Katti elates, “Our gold nanoparticles are not only ecologically and biologically benign, they also are biologically active against cancer cells.” It all sounds too good to be true, but the team insists that the approach is reliable. They hope to ready it for production so that the new cinnamon-gold nanoparticles can replace existing toxic varieties. The study on the work was published in the journal Pharmaceutical Research. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20872051 added by: toyotabedzrock

Bill Maher Goes Out with Another Conspiracy: ‘We Need a War All the Time So We Can…Buy Oil’

Catching up from Friday night, on the last Real Time with Bill Maher until September, Maher insisted “I’m not trying to be a conspiracy theorist,” but then proceeded to assert the Defense Department “uses more oil than anywhere else to kill people in the Middle East to get fuel to fight wars,” so “I do think there’s something — just the way the pharmaceutical companies sometimes come up with a pill before they come up with the disease — I think maybe we need a war all the time so we can wear out equipment and buy oil.” Maher’s claim came during a one-on-one with far-left film director Oliver Stone, who is producing a ten-hour documentary for Showtime, Secret History of America, about how, as Maher agreed, “America always does seem to need an enemy.” When Stone maintained the Cold War was fueled by an exaggerated fear of communism, Maher jumped in: “I’d like to blame it on oil.” He expounded: The United States Defense Department is the largest procurer of oil in the world, it uses more oil than anywhere else to kill people in the Middle East to get fuel to fight wars. It’s sort of a cycle of life thing. Now, I’m not trying to be a conspiracy theorist. But I do think there’s something — just the way the pharmaceutical companies sometimes come up with a pill before they come up with the disease — I think maybe we need a war all the time so we can wear out equipment and buy oil. Three weeks earlier, on the May 21 program, Maher offered this great insight into the Gulf of Mexico oil leak: Do you think BP could end this oil gushing out of the ocean if they just blew up the well and tapped it and they are not doing so because there’s still money to be made from the oil coming out of the well? Remember these the next time a MSNBC lefty derides a conservative for some “crazy” belief.
