Classic Bump n’ Grind: The Old Time Burlesque

Long before strippers started twirling on shiny brass poles in G-strings, men would get goofy watching women twirl their pasties at the old-timey burlesque shows. America’s big cities often had dozens of burlesque theaters that featured bodacious babes in barely-there costumes, at least until prudish city officials started banning the shows. But with the neo-burlesque movement coming back into vogue, and with Christina Aguilera and Cher co-starring in the new movie, “Burlesque”, here’s a fond look back at the heyday of burlesque. This piece includes a number of high resolution vintage black-and-white photographs, a slide show and two musical documentary short films. http://disembedded.wordpress.com/2010/11/29/classic-bump-n-grind-the-old-time-bu… added by: disembedded

Immortal: Portraits of Naked, Beautiful Youth

“Immortal” is a stunning work of photo-based art by the Parisian photographer Vee Speers, a work which creates a new world that merges Mona Lisa charm and mystery, with the melancholy of Dorian Gray. At once alluring and disquieting, these portraits of naked, beautiful young people are set against backdrops of Eden-like natural beauty, or scenes of post-apocalyptic destruction. What makes “Immortal” work so well is the direct gaze that Speers elicits from her subjects. The look is genuine, whether it’s detached, disdainful, modest, defiant, arrogant, melancholy, worried, or puffed up with peacock machismo. These Immortals are all like tragic fallen angels, eyes opened with animal intelligence, looking out onto an uncertain future, not even aware of how perfectly beautiful they appear to be right now. This piece includes a number of high-resolution color photographs, a remarkable slide show and the short film, “The Picture of Dorian Gray.” http://disembedded.wordpress.com/2010/09/16/photos-of-the-day-portraits-of-naked… added by: disembedded

Pig Me: A Poor Little Pig’s Escape from the Slaughter House

“Pig Me” is a wonderful animated short film by five students from Denmark’s Animation Workshop. The very humorous film tells the story of a poor pig that manages to escape from the butcher’s claws, just to find himself in horrible surroundings. He finds his way to the village pet shop and sees the nice and warm atmosphere between the costumers and the animals getting bought. Fortunately, he decides to take refuge inside the little pet shop… Fortunately? This piece includes a number of colorful illustrations, as well as the wickedly funny animated short film. http://disembedded.wordpress.com/2010/08/22/pig-me-a-poor-little-pigs-escape-fro… added by: disembedded

BP’s Next Huge Oil Catastrophe: It’s MARS!

“MARS!” is a very thought-provoking animated short by Joe Bichard and Jack Cunningham, which tells the now painfully common tale of one species colonizing another and sucking its resources dry. This poignant environmental message shows the perils of utilizing a planet’s resources with absolutely no regard for nature and wildlife. “MARS!” can’t help but evoke clear connections to British Petroleum’s ongoing, catastrophic Louisiana oil spill that’s devastating the southern Gulf Coast. This is what we’re actually doing to our own planet! This piece includes colorful illustrations and the engaging animated short, “MARS!” http://disembedded.wordpress.com/2010/06/11/bps-next-huge-oil-catastrophe-its-ma… added by: disembedded

One Flew Over the Dodo’s Nest: I’m Alive!

“I’m Alive!” is the new too-cuckoo-for-dodos video of British singer Don Fardon’s 1969 song, remixed by international DJ Ashley Beedle. The soundtrack here is from the Dodo commercial for Coca Cola’s 5 Alive, but now it’s out with the ad’s dodos and in with some very sexy, high-kicking dancing nurses. The video opens with a frail old pensioner, surrounded by some very concerned nurses. Suddenly a melody of trumpets and funky drumbeats erupts, and he suddenly comes alive and is joined by a group of old pensioners break-dancing and banding together in an almighty dance-off. This piece includes a number of color photographs, as well as the very funny music video. http://disembedded.wordpress.com/2010/05/29/one-flew-over-the-dodos-nest-im-aliv… added by: disembedded
