Oscar Pistorius Nike Ad: "Bullet in the Chamber" Takes on Chilling New Meaning

Oscar Pistorius’ Nike ad during the 2012 London Olympics – part of the athletic giant’s “Weapon” series – declared the sprinter a “bullet in the chamber.” Given the stunning events of this morning, when Pistorius was arrested for murder in South Africa, those words have taken on a chilling new meaning. Early Thursday, South African police arrested the double amputee and Olympic inspiration for the shooting death of his model girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp . Initial reports indicated that the death was an accident, but police have refrained from definitive statements on the crime; he is due in court tomorrow. Oscar Pistorius’ Nike ad, obviously now in bad taste given the situation, has been pulled by the company. But it begs the broader question in general: Are weaponry and violence too serious to employ metaphorically – and so casually – in sports marketing? Is athletic competition really akin to war? Watch the ad below and see if you think it’s inappropriate, not just in light of Pistorius alleged slaying of Reeva Steenkamp, but as a general idea: Oscar Pistorius Nike “Weapon” Ad

Random Ridiculousness: Thirsty Azz Man Pulls Out Gun After Being Denied Entry To “Ladies Night”

Boys just wanna have fun … New Haven police arrested a man at Red’s Café, in Connecticut, just before 12:30 a.m. on Sunday after receiving a report of someone inside with a gun, police said: A bar employee told police she’d argued with Sean Peterson, 38, of New Haven, when he insisted on entering the bar on ladies night, police said. She told police that Peterson displayed a gun when she told him he couldn’t enter the bar because he wasn’t a lady, police said. After Peterson went to the bar, the employee and the owner called police. When police responded and approached Peterson, he reached into his pocket, swore at the officers and fled, police said. Officers tackled Peterson after what they called a violent struggle and removed a knife from his left pants pocket and a .41 caliber Smith & Wesson model 657 Magnum revolver, police said. Police said they also confiscated a black ski mask. How can you blame him? He wasn’t trying to be tardy for the party! Source New Haven Police

violent boyfriend forced pregnant girlfriend to sign an ‘abuse contract’

A violent boyfriend forced his pregnant girlfriend to sign an 'abuse contract' allowing him to beat her whenever he wanted. Under the terms of the contract Graydon Smith,31, was allowed to punch, kick and throttle his 19 year old girlfriend. His only restriction was that he wasn't allowed to punch her stomach. The bizarre contract was revealed after police arrested him for assaulting his girlfriend at their home in Seattle, Washington. The victim's stepfather had called police when he called at the house and saw Smith throttling his daughter. Smith admitted to police that he had made his girlfriend, who has not been named, sign the contract giving him free rein to carry out domestic abuse. Seattle police detective Elizabeth Ellis said: 'Graydon made her sign a statement giving him permission to physically abuse her anywhere on her body except on her pregnant belly.' When police arrested Smith they found his girlfriend with bruises and cuts to her face. She confirmed her boyfriend was responsible for the assault. Unemployed Smith has been charged with assault and harassment. He is being held on $75,000 bond.
