Kate Upton on SI Cover Shoot: My Body Shut Down!

Anyone who thinks models don’t work hard, think again. Kate Upton made history with her latest Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue cover as the first to grace it two straight years since Tyra Banks in 1996-97. Boy did she have to earn it in Antarctica, though. Kate Upton Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue Cover Shoot “It was definitely the hardest shoot I’ve ever done,” she says. “The best as well … Antarctica is one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been to.” “But I’m from Florida, so it was pretty painful. I was very surprised by the news that that’s where my shoot was going to be located,’’ she recalled. Kate Upton joked that it took her two months to thaw out. “When I came back I was losing hearing and eyesight because my body was shutting down,” she said. “It was working so hard to keep me warm.” Hey, at least the resulting Kate Upton bikini photos will help keep others warm. That must mean something, doesn’t it? She’s a real humanitarian. “It was an accomplishment just to get through the shoot… I didn’t even think about the possibility of being the cover until after I thawed out a bit!” Kate adds. “But now it’s like, wow … I actually went down there and was able to accomplish that.” Planning for the shoot took about three years due to costs and scheduling, making it the first-ever fashion shoot that has taken place in Antarctica. “Everything about the picture is perfect,” SI editor MJ Day said, “First of all, it’s cold, even though we were there in summer. The wind chill was sub-zero.” “The elements are really working against you.” “She never complained. She’d just say, ‘Okay, let’s do it again.’ I knew if I needed to bury someone in clothing, I needed her physique and curves to come through.” You see, ladies? Curves are awesome. Kate Upton 2013 SI cover :   SO HOT Not my favorite shot of her, but not complaining Not a fan! Wish they had gone with someone else! View Poll »

Oscar Pistorius Nike Ad: "Bullet in the Chamber" Takes on Chilling New Meaning

Oscar Pistorius’ Nike ad during the 2012 London Olympics – part of the athletic giant’s “Weapon” series – declared the sprinter a “bullet in the chamber.” Given the stunning events of this morning, when Pistorius was arrested for murder in South Africa, those words have taken on a chilling new meaning. Early Thursday, South African police arrested the double amputee and Olympic inspiration for the shooting death of his model girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp . Initial reports indicated that the death was an accident, but police have refrained from definitive statements on the crime; he is due in court tomorrow. Oscar Pistorius’ Nike ad, obviously now in bad taste given the situation, has been pulled by the company. But it begs the broader question in general: Are weaponry and violence too serious to employ metaphorically – and so casually – in sports marketing? Is athletic competition really akin to war? Watch the ad below and see if you think it’s inappropriate, not just in light of Pistorius alleged slaying of Reeva Steenkamp, but as a general idea: Oscar Pistorius Nike “Weapon” Ad

Jim Jones Arrested; Rapper Gets Belligerent With Police

Jim Jones has been arrested after the rapper allegedly become belligerent with police in Fair Lawn, N.J., where he resides, according to news reports. Jones was apparently charged with disorderly conduct and hindering apprehension. Police were questioning Jim Jones about a ticketed vehicle they were trying to tow. He agreed to pay the fee but allegedly became upset when questioned about prior warrants for failing to shovel a sidewalk and failing to yield to an emergency vehicle. He posted bail on the warrants and has a February 27 court date. The 37-year-old hip-hop artist is a member of the Diplomats. The New York-based rap crew has been around for years, and Jim Jones’ hit song “We Fly High” was actually one of 2007’s top-selling tracks.

VIDEO: James Cameron Hitting Bottom (of Ocean)

James Cameron broke a world record on Wednesday, plunging five miles below the surface of the Pacific Ocean and eclipsing the earlier four-mile mark held by a Japanese crew. But the filmmaker is not done: Later this month, in a 43-inch wide submersible christened Deepsea Challenger, Cameron will attempt to be only the third man to reach the deepest point on the planet — and the first to do it alone. Seems like a long way to go to promote Titanic 3D , but hey. Of course, previous Cameron expeditions have taken the Oscar-winner to shallower sea depths, but this time he means it : He built his miniature submarine secretly in Australia, and already it has outdone all other watercraft in its ability to ferry people through the deep’s crushing pressures. As with the birth of the private space rocket industry, where commercial companies are building ships to take astronauts aloft, the debut of Mr. Cameron’s submarine signals the rising importance of entrepreneurs in the global race to advance science and technology. He said the vehicle over all had many cameras but only one thick porthole, its inner diameter three inches. He described the craft as a “vertical torpedo,” meant to fall and rise quickly so as to maximize time for exploring the seabed. “You’d be an idiot not to be apprehensive, but I trust the design,” Mr. Cameron said as he contemplated his impending dive. “You’re going into one of the most unforgiving places on earth.” But as Brian Lam adds , it’s OK! If only because, ahem: “James’s breath vapor and sweat will condense on a metal surface where it is collected into a bag; he can drink it in an emergency.” Right . And then what souvenirs would we be left with? Xenophyophores, the bottom-dwelling “mysterious life forms [that] consist of a single cell and appear able to grow to the size of a fist”? EBay does not approve. Anyway, here’s video: [ NYT , The Scuttlefish via The Awl ]
