New Details Emerge on Lara Logan Beating; Flag Poles Used in Attack

Lara Logan is resting at home and sources say the CBS reporter is in good spirits , following a savage attack at the hands of Egypt protesters. But a new report details just how brutal of a beating Logan suffered at the hands of these rioters on February 11. Sources tell The Sunday Times of London that attackers used fists and flag poles against Logan, while wounds that remained hours later were the result of “”aggressive pinching.” It all began around 1 a.m. local time, as a crowd of approximately 200 people shouted “Spy!” and “Israeli!,” surrounding Logan and her co-workers in the wake of President Hosni Mubarak’s resignation. One security guard had his hand broken. A group of women and soldiers eventually came to the aid of Logan and company. They pulled her away from the mob and back to the Four Seasons, where a hotel doctor treated her and gave her a sedative. “Lara is getting better daily,” a friend told the newspaper. “The psychological trauma is as bad as, if not worse than, the physical injuries. She might talk about it at some time in the future, but not now.”

Four score and seven years later, Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg Address, steadfastly vying to preserve the nation his predecessors fought so valiantly for. Ranking the achievements and indelible marks left by these two men is impossible. Comparing 19th and 18th Century fashion, however? You’re on it! Vote:

The Cannabis Papers a Citizen’s Guide to Cannabinoids

Any student of history can tell you we are not the first Americans to confront untruths. (CHICAGO) – This is a book project called The Cannabis Papers: a citizen's guide to cannabinoids. It is written by “Publius” – a pen name once used by the founders and redrafted by the folks at Illinois NORML. The book's essays will be released first online and then published together later this year. The latest release is essay #15 The Birth of the ECS. Also posted… Part One: LIFE #1 Nature’s (legal) cannabinoids #2 Should pregnant women smoke consume pot? #3 Sporting cannabinoids #4 “DSI for Dummies” #5 Astrocytes and cannabinoids #6 A medical cannabis club called CHAMP #7 Chemotherapy and cannabinoids #8 Patient patients #9 To sleep, perchance to dream #10 “Cannabinoids” succeed where “marijuana” fails #11 Washington's hemp seed love Part Two: LIBERTY #13 Liberty to change Nixon's law #14 Intermission – let's get high #15 The birth of the ECS #17 Ownership rights – FOID meets COID #21 “Hi, my name is Publius and I have been an alcoholic since 1972.” Any student of history can tell you we are not the first Americans to confront untruths. To voice our truth through language, to create a new set and setting, we turned to a collection of essays known as The Federalist Papers. During 1787 and 1788, James Madison, John Jay, and Alexander Hamilton wrote 85 essays in support of the US Constitution. They used the pen name “Publius” in honor of a famed Roman republican – someone they saw as a defender of liberty. We are “Publius” in 2010 for the same purpose – to make our sum greater than our individual parts. In doing so, we have created a series of essays to detail the role of cannabinoids in Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness. The essays take truths like “all human beings – in fact all mammals – use cannabinoids” and offers suggestions and ideas on how this will effect reform in the immediate future. Simply stated, cannabinoids and the endocannabinoid system modulate other systems within the human body – and that fact alone represents a revolution in how we will soon be thinking about nature and cannabinoids. You can start reading now by going to Illinois NORML's website at: http://www.illinoisnorml.org/tcp or click on The Cannabis Papers under News & Information. ~ Publius is Bryan Brickner, Julie Falco, Dianna Lynn Meyer, Dan Linn, Stephen Young, William Abens, Danielle Schumacher, Derek Rea (1954-2008), David Nott, Dan S. Wang, Brian Allemana, and many others.~ If you are able to donate to Illinois NORML we would be very grateful for your support. We are< working hard to end cannabis prohibition in Illinois and have made significant progress over the past year moving our medical cannabis legislation through the Senate chamber. The Illinois chapter of the National Organization to Reform Marijuana Laws is financially dependent on our dues paying members and generous supporters, and we thank you. ABC Hypes NAACP Indictment of Tea Party as Racist, a Smear the Network Stoked

Four months after ABC’s World News spent a weekend defaming anti-ObamaCare Tea Party protesters as “very ugly” with “ reports of racial and homophobic slurs ,” citing “protesters roaming Washington, some of them increasingly emotional, yelling slurs and epithets ,” Tuesday’s newscast, unlike those on CBS and NBC, credentialed the NAACP ‘s charge that the “Tea Party movement is a threat to the pursuit of human rights, justice and equality for all.” Sans any ideological label, anchor Diane Sawyer set up the full July 13 story: “The nation’s oldest civil rights organization, the NAACP , has just adopted a resolution this evening at its annual convention condemning quote, ‘racist behavior by Tea Party members.’” Reporter Dan Harris relayed: The NAACP points to the racial epithets allegedly hurled at black members of Congress by Tea Party members during the health care debate and to the racist signs that critics say they spotted at Tea Party events to support its conclusion that the “Tea Party movement is a threat to the pursuit of human rights, justice and equality for all.” Going to a Tea Party leader who is black, Harris pressed: “We’ve all seen the signs. There have been signs that compare Baarck Obama to a monkey, there have been signs that have had the ‘n’ word on them. When you see those signs, how do you feel?” Harris, however, did at least quote Sarah Palin’s tweet asking: “Are liberty-loving, equality-respecting patriots racist?” And, citing an ABC News/Washington Post survey, he noted “the biggest reasons people join the Tea Party are politics and ideology, rather than views on race.” Earlier NB item on Tuesday afternoon about an ABCNews.com post headlined: “Michelle Obama Rouses NAACP Before Vote Condemning ‘Racist’ Elements of Tea Party” Back in March, NB archive: Saturday, March 20 : “ABC: Anti-ObamaCare Protest ‘Turned Very Ugly’ with ‘Racial and Homophobic Slurs’” Sunday, March 21 : “ABC’s Sawyer: ‘Protesters Roaming’ DC, ‘Increasingly Emotional, Yelling Slurs and Epithets’” Plus, from March 21 : “CBS: ‘Mean from the Start’ Health Debate ‘Turned Even Nastier Yesterday’ with ‘Racial Epithets’ and ‘Sexual Slurs’” From the Tuesday, July 13 ABC World News: DIANE SAWYER: Also on politics, a controversy surrounding the Tea Party. The nation’s oldest civil rights organization, the NAACP, has just adopted a resolution this evening at its annual convention condemning quote, “racist behavior by Tea Party members.” Tonight, the   Tea Party is fighting back and here’s Dan Harris. DAN HARRIS: The NAACP points to the racial epithets allegedly hurled at black members of Congress by Tea Party members during the health care debate and to the racist signs that critics say they spotted at Tea Party events to support its conclusion that the “Tea Party movement is a threat to the pursuit of human rights, justice and equality for all.” At the group’s annual meeting in Kansas City, the resolution had plenty of support. UNIDENTIFIED MAN: When we turn on the television and see posters and fliers that send very frightening messages to our community, we have to address it. HARRIS: Tea Party favorite Sarah Palin called the resolution “divisive,” asking today on Twitter: “Are liberty-loving, equality-respecting patriots racist?” David Webb is the co-founder of the New York City Tea Party. DAVID WEBB, TEA PARTY 365: I think the NAACP, in its march towards irrelevancy as an organization, needs an enemy to maintain its power base. HARRIS, TO WEBB: Let me push you a little bit. WEBB: Sure. HARRIS, TO WEBB: We’ve all seen the signs. There have been signs that compare Baarck Obama to a monkey, there have been signs that have had the “n” word on them. When you see those signs, how do you feel? WEBB: They’re offensive. They don’t belong there, but there will always be fringe elements. HARRIS: The biggest reasons people join the Tea Party are politics and ideology, rather than views on race. But today, the NAACP rejected the charge that it’s playing politics. BENJAMIN TODD JEALOUS, PRESIDENT, NAACP: We have no problem with the Tea Party, we have a problem with the Tea Party tolerating racists in their ranks. HARRIS: This race-based fight shows no signs of letting up. The NAACP is planning an anti-Tea Party march on Washington this fall. Dan Harris, ABC News, New York.

In the meantime you can find out who is expected to start for each team with our squad sheets , or keep up with all the latest World Cup news on Sean Ingle’s live blog . Alternatively, you could find out why David Hytner thinks Germany’s football team are reaping the rewards of the country’s liberation generation . Here’s a snippet: When Sami Khedira and his Under-21 team‑mates held aloft the European Championship trophy last summer, after humbling England 4–0 in the final, they dreamed of changing the face of German football. Little did they know that their opportunity would come so quickly. After Euro 2008, Joachim Löw, the Germany manager, accepted the need to “rejuvenate” a squad that had become too heavily seasoned in parts. He has done so in spectacular fashion. Germany have only nine survivors from that tournament here. (It is worth remembering that they were runners-up in Austria and Switzerland.) And once Löw had done with filleting his squad, the players he turned to were almost all from the next generation. Arsenal will sign a defender during World Cup, says Arsene Wenger

• Arsenal manager promises an imminent arrival • ‘Something will happen before the end of the World Cup’ The Arsenal manager, Arsène Wenger, hopes to sign a defender before the end of the World Cup. The Gunners will be left desperately short of central defenders if Sol Campbell, William Gallas and Mikaël Silvestre fail to renew their contracts when they expire at the end of the month. The Frenchman said at the end of last season that Arsenal’s “average” performances at the back cost them dearly in their pursuit of a first Premier League title in six years. He is keen to find a centre half to partner Thomas Vermaelen at the heart of the Arsenal defence for next season and has been splitting his time in South Africa between scouting and commentating for French television. “We are not close (to signing anyone) at the moment,” Wenger told the Arsenal website . “We are quiet. But there will be something happening before the end of the World Cup – certainly on the defensive side.” Arsenal Premier League Transfer window guardian.co.uk
