This story still has so many unanswered questions… Almost two months after O.J. Murdock passed away, the Hillsborough County (Fla.) medical examiner’s office has officially ruled the cause of death a suicide. The former Tennessee Titans wide receiver died on July 30th. Interim Medical Examiner, Dr. Mary K. Mainland, signed off on the autopsy report last Friday. According to Sports Illustrated , O.J.’s family plans to have further investigations into the cause of death… What remains unclear is what effect, if any, football played in the July 30 tragedy. Murdock was the fifth former NFL player in the last two years to take his own life and the fourth this year — following Kurt Crain (April 10), Ray Easterling (April 19), Junior Seau (May 2) — and his family has consented to his brain tissue being examined by Boston University researchers studying the effects of chronic traumatic encephalopathy, a degenerative disease brought on by multiple concussions. While his family awaits the findings from that study, his death remains a puzzling tragedy for them, his friends, teammates and former coaches. By the accounts of those people who knew him best, Murdock was a happy young soul with a 500-watt smile and fervor to restart his NFL career with the Titans after missing his rookie season last year with a torn Achilles tendon. “When you met O.J., you fell in love with him. He was a humble young man who just had this great gleam in his eye,” said Hadley Engelhard, his agent. “He just had a wonderful personality,” said Harry Hubbard, who was Murdock’s head football coach at Middleton High in Tampa. “He had a great smile. He was a loving person.” Images via AP/twitter
In case you were wondering NFL stands for “Not Financially Liable” The New England Patriots Restructure Chad Ochocinco’s Contract When the Bengals traded Chad Ochocinco to the Patriots, the receiver was set to make $6 million for the 2011 season. With New England, though, he restructured his deal to make it a three-year, $11.5 million deal (he did, however, end up making that original amount thanks to bonuses). And he seemed fine with taking a smaller base salary for the chance to play for the Patriots. Now, after a less than stellar season in which he caught 15 passes with only one touchdown — and disappeared for long stretches of the season — Ochocinco again has restructured his deal. And again, he seems fine with making less money. According to the Boston Herald, Ochocinco will make $1 million for the 2012 season instead of the $3 million he was scheduled to earn, and for a guy who had a good chance to be cut following the Super Bowl (or even before), Ochocinco supposedly is motivated to become a top-notch receiver instead of what he appeared to be last season — a 33-year-old who had nothing left. “Chad has unfinished business,” his agent Drew Rosenhaus told the paper. “He has unfinished business with the Patriots. They were very generous to him last year, and he’s interested in giving the team his best. He feels with a(n) offseason, with a great offseason, the lockout hurt him, it’s a tough system, he’ll learn the system, he’ll get accustomed to it, and I think he’ll do a lot better. So, he’s excited. He’s ready to make an impact.” Ochocinco made virtually no impact last season in New England, and he was benched for part of the playoffs. Whether it was because Ochocinco couldn’t handle the intricacies of the Patriots offense or whether it was a chemistry issue with Tom Brady or whether it was an issue with Ochocinco’s physical skills (and how much they might have declined from 2010 to 2011), Ochocinco simply couldn’t make himself relevant in New England. Says Chad’s agent Drew Rosenhaus about his performance: “With the lockout, he missed all of the offseason program,” Rosenhaus said. “We represent a lot of guys who have played in that offseason over the years … and it’s a very tricky offensive system to learn. And it’s very precise. Now, Chad has all offseason, he’ll be in the workouts, so we’re excited about it.” Get it together Chad, you have a very expensive wedding to pay for soon! Rocsi learned the hard way that it is important to do a little research before interviewing guests. During a live interview, Rocsi asked NY Giants Wide Receiver, Victor Cruz if his father would be present to watch him play in the Super Bowl, only problem is, Victor’s dad has been dead for 5 years… In her defense, it was probably an honest mistake. Being in this business, I know how fast things can move. Sometimes we get thrown into situations and make assumptions that we shouldn’t. I give VC props for being so polite when he responded to her question. Rocsi also had a good comeback when she said “He’ll be with you in spirit…” Check out the video:
