Bottle-Boat Plastiki Sets Sail Across Pacific

The bottle-boat named Plastiki has already set sail into the Pacific. It is 60-foot (20m) catamaran made out of 12,500 reclaimed plastic bottles and other recycled PET plastic and waste products. They will sail from San Francisco to Sydney to spread awareness about pollution in the world’s oceans. David De Rothschild an environmentalist and expedition leader together with Co-skipper David Thompson, expedition diver Olav Heyerdahl, filmmakers Max Jourdan and Vern Moen will sail for 3 months passing the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. The expedition has an aim to promote awareness of the amount of garbage disposed in our ocean and how it has greatly affect our environment as evidenced by current sea level rise, ocean acidification and marine pollution. Today, he explained that it was a deliberate “overall branding strategy.” Boy, was he right.
