Aveda Salon Charged A Curly Haired Customer A Texture Fee

Source: LaylaBird / Getty If the world has taught us anything, it’s that people of color define diversity. Our hair type and complexion fall on a extremely wide spectrum.  For years the beauty industry ignored the needs of the Black and Brown community by limiting their products to those who fit within their guideline. Once entrepreneurs started creating products that reflected their needs, bigger companies followed suit. Brands took an active role in becoming more inclusive to various skin tones and hair textures. While this is step in the right direction, haircare brand Aveda shows us there’s still a ways to go.  This week, Aveda charge a curly haired customer of color a $10.00 “texture fee” because her hair would require more products. In a now viral tweet, Audre voiced her disbelief. So I just got charged $10 extra at Aveda salon for the “textured” hair fee. The woman at the counter said, “It's because we have to use extra product. It's not meant to be discriminatory.” Is it just me or is that not okay? — Audre Lawda Mercy (@k_lisarae) October 15, 2019 “ So I just got charged $10 extra at Aveda salon for the “textured” hair fee. The woman at the counter said, “It’s because we have to use extra product. It’s not meant to be discriminatory.”  Is it just me or is that not okay? “ It’s not you. And no, this is not okay. Audre continued to say, “ The response was that all curly-haired folks get charged more, especially when flat-ironed. It’s the principle. If I am paying u to wash and style my hair, just because its curly doesn’t mean it takes more product or time. It just means there’s a different styling process .” Another user responded, “ Why is straight hair the standard? All bodies should be treated equally. @aveda is surcharging based on genetics. Norm or not, it’s not ethical. ” Why is straight hair the standard? All bodies should be treated equally. @aveda is surcharging based on genetics. Norm or not, it's not ethical. — Lauren Davis (@WriterLDavis) October 16, 2019 Aveda caught wind of the commotion and responded to Audre saying, “ We’re concerned to hear of your experience, @k_lisarae. Please DM us with additional information. While our salons are independently owned and operated, we will ensure this matter is shared with the appropriate teams. “ Once again, there is an issue that screams lack of diversity. A customer shouldn’t have to pay a fee because their hair texture requires more product. Perhaps a modification of the products that address the needs of curly, kinky, and coily hair is a better solution. Planet earth is the home to billions of people who look, speak, and act differently. In such a diverse world, we still encounter these moments that make people of color question why their physical attributes are not good enough to co-exist with everyone else’s. Although Aveda stated they’re “independently owned and operated”, this mentality is not specific to the store that Audre visited. This policy is practiced by other companies all over the world. Audre and Aveda have not come to a conclusion yet, but I hope she is vindicated. What is likely to happen is Aveda will put out a statement and conduct an equity and inclusion training for their staff. This has become the formula brands resort to when their employees lack good judgement. It’s time for brands to look inward and figure out a better solution. *We reached out to Audre but heard nothing back by time of publication* DON’T MISS Cincinnati Might Be Outlawing Natural Hair Discrimination Walmart Accused Of Racism For Locking Black Haircare Products Behind Glass Lush Cosmetics Releases New Hair Products After 2-Year Gap [ione_media_gallery src=”https://hellobeautiful.com” id=”3057941″ overlay=”true”]

How Black Girls, Women Clap Back Against Racists Keeping Them Out Of STEM

B lack girls and women are resisting the racism that tries to keep them out of certain industries and fields of study, especially when it comes to STEM (science, technology, engineering and math). Recently, three Black teens learned they were finalists in NASA’s acclaimed high school competition. India Skinner, Mikayla Sharrieff and Bria Snell , all 17-year-old 11th graders at Banneker High School in Washington, D.C., invented a water-purification system that separated lead from their school’s drinking fountains, The Washington Post reported. They were the latest proof that Black girls are indeed magic. The three young ladies were the only all-Black female team to be named among the eight finalists — an incredibly significant accomplishment especially considering that Black students comprised 16 percent of high school enrollment in STEM courses for the 2015-16 academic year according to the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights . After creating a homemade water purification system, a group of three D.C. high school girls were named finalists in a @NASA competition. Then racist internet trolls tried to skew online voting to have them eliminated from the competition. https://t.co/1bN0PlbqVm — MAKERS (@MAKERSwomen) May 4, 2018 When public voting was opened up for the NASA competition, the teens turned to social media to rally support. However, some racist trolls tried to hack the system and promote a smear campaign on the notorious White supremacist online breeding ground 4chan to keep the ladies from winning. NASA had to shut down the public voting, with the girls set to find out whether they will be named winners this month. Winners will go to NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, for two days of workshops and get a $4,000 stipend to cover those expenses. The teens, in solidarity with the Black activists and organizations that helped support them, were focusing on the positive responses that their project has prompted from their classmates, community and more folks on social media. “It’s important to be role models for a younger generation who want to be in the STEM field but don’t think they can,” Sharrieff, who inspired someone to set up a college fundraising page for her and the other teens, said. Elsewhere, Democratic Calfornia Rep. Maxine Waters and the Congressional Black Caucus have addressed some of the discriminatory messages that try to dissuade Black folks from stepping into the STEM field. The CBC visited Silicon Valley on Tuesday to propose actions for better representation in tech, which falls at a measly 5 percent for Black people across Apple, Twitter and other companies, Axios reported. The teens’ success and Waters’ campaign also come after Jeanette Epps , a Black women astronaut, was kicked off a ground-breaking mission to the International Space Station in January. Racism was named by Epps’ brother, Henry Epps as the reason why she was deterred from becoming the first African American to visit the ISS. He started a Move.org petition to help raise awareness and fight back. It’s clear that this discrimination against people of color in STEM will be challenged in every way possible. Here’s What Young Black People Are Doing To Fight Back Against HIV And AIDS

See more here:

Y oung Black people are much more “concerned” about the global HIV and AIDS epidemic in comparison to all other demographic in America, according to a new study. And it’s for good reason, too, as African-Americans are affected the most by the sexually transmitted virus despite having a disproportionate representation among the overall population. Nearly half of Black Americans from 18 to 30 years old were especially worried about HIV and AIDS when it comes to people they know. That figure of 46 percent was more than three times the number for White people, a survey conducted by the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation found. The survey was published Thursday ., one day before the annual observation of World AIDS Day. Exacerbating those findings are the fact that Black Americans “account for a higher proportion of new HIV diagnoses, those living with HIV, and those ever diagnosed with AIDS, compared to other races/ethnicities,” according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). As such, about 34 percent of Black people were rightfully concerned about contracting the disease, compared to just 16 percent of White people. There appeared to be a silver lining when it comes to awareness, though: Young Black folks are also the ones most likely to get an HIV test, a key fact considering the virus is older than they are. “An entire generation has been born and grown up without ever knowing a time when HIV did not exist, and they may be the first to see it end,” Tina Hoff, Senior Vice President, Health Communications and Media Partnerships, Kaiser Family Foundation, said in a press release. “Whether this future is realized rests with those most affected being educated about – and having access to – the latest advances in prevention and treatment.” In the U.S., Black people accounted for 40 percent of Americans living with HIV in 2013, the year with the most recent statistics available, according to the CDC. Black people in general around the world have also been lopsidedly diagnosed with HIV and AIDS, with Africa being ground zero with a reported whopping 69 percent of the world’s 34 million HIV diagnoses. More than 90 percent of HIV positive children around the world are in Africa, as well. While there has yet to be a cure, vaccine trials are ongoing, including one that recently launched in sub-Saharan Africa, according to the National Institutes of Health. SEE ALSO: Who Is Next? Mariah Carey Snags Millions In Court Settlement With Ex-Fiance James Packer

The rest is here:

Source: Jon Kopaloff / Getty The short lived romance between singer Mariah Carey and billionaire James Packer yielded millions of dollars in return for the falsetto songstress. We previously reported , Carey asked for $50 million in court after her split from her ex-fiance, claiming the relationship inconvenienced her by forcing her to uproot her life in New York to move to LA. The case also noted a leg of her tour that was apparently cancelled due to Packer. The death knell of their relationship was an argument in Greece involving Packer and Carey’s assistant that ‘traumatized’ the ‘Butterfly’ singer. Now that the dust has settled, Carey reportedly walked away with between $5 and $10 million, and gets to keep her massive engagement ring–allegedly worth less than the $10 million dollars it was originally appraised for. I had worked there when I was 17, as the coat check girl, and I enjoyed returning. I still knew some of the staff at this point, and felt quite comfortable there.  I remember I was wearing one of the Azzedine Alaia tops that were everywhere that year. And hoop earrings. I think it was cool enough for a jacket.  Because I remember being glad I had a jacket by the end of that night. You had a car and a driver that evening. Sometime later, you offered me a ride to my home.  I said, sure. During the making of the RUN DMC movie, I had been in vans with you and other crew members.  I don’t recall having accepted a ride home alone with you before that night. At no time that night did I say: “Russell, I will go home with you”.  Or, “Come home with me.” Or “I will have sex with you.”  Or “I have the desire to have sex with you.” In early November model Keri Claussen Khalighi accused Simmons of forcing her to have sex . She said Simmons and director Brett Ratner lured her to his apartment. Another woman, Tanya Reid, also accused Simmons of pressuring her to perform oral sex on Ratner.
