Just in time for the rerelease of The Artist , Tom Selleck is the latest celebrity to come out against the Oscar-winner’s wonder dog Uggie. “As much as I like him — and he’s a cute dog — he kind of panders a little bit,” the actor told Conan O’Brien last night before going on to extol the awards-caliber virtue of his Jesse Stone co-star Joe, the golden retriever who lost to Uggie at last year’s inaugural Golden Collar Awards. And it gets better — for us, that is. Uggie, not so much. Damn . Uggie gave his response exclusively to Movieline: [via @SeriouslyOMGWTF ]

This weekend sees the release of Dark Shadows , marking the eighth time director Tim Burton has teamed with Johnny Depp , his second-favorite performer on screen. (He no doubt frequently has to tell Helena Bonham Carter as much.) So natural is their pairing that we have come to expect a certain level of quality and/or box-office performance from their combined efforts, and an announcement of a new Burton title has generally come to carry the expectation of a Depp appearance. Although Hollywood has long brought us such fruitful and lucrative actor/director relationships — from both Cary Grant and James Stewart’s collaborations with Alfred Hitchcock to Robert De Niro’s legendary work with Martin Scorsese — consider nine other long-term pairings packing a little (or a lot) less luster. Héctor Elizondo / Gary Marshall After Marshall cast character actor Elizondo in his feature directing debut, soap-opera spoof Young Doctors In Love , the two became friends to such an extent that the actor has now appeared in every one of Marshall’s 17 movies. Be it the modern fairy tale Pretty Woman , to the retro fairy tales of The Princess Diaries , or Marshall’s latest unwatchableholiday pictures, Elizondo always manages to steer things a bit closer to the side of classy. Matt Walsh / Todd Phillips As Phillips rose up the Hollywood ladder with his frat-boy-centric films he has done two things: struck box office gold, and taken actor-comedian Matt Walsh with him. Walsh has the kind of face you note, if not outright recognize, thanks to a long career of comedic appearances. But this co-founder of the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater is arguably best known as the doctor to whom the Vegas revelers turn for information in The Hangover , and Walsh worked with Phillips for a sixth time in the follow-up, Due Date . Many of those roles found him playing a character by the name of Walsh. Michael Par

Reports say Oscar-winner will play Man of Steel’s adoptive father, Jonathan Kent, in Zack Snyder’s reboot. By Shawn Adler Kevin Costner Photo: Getty Images/ Kevin Winter Kevin Costner is a man of interest for the Man of Steel, with director Zack Snyder and team keen to cast the “Bull Durham” and “Dances With Wolves” star in their Superman reboot, according to a Deadline report. Citing “well-placed sources,” Latino Review reported that Costner will play Jonathan “Pa” Kent, Kal-El’s adoptive Earth father. With the film shrouded in secrecy, though, it might take Brainiac himself to figure out exactly for what role Costner is being courted. But, given Costner’s screen history in films like “Field of Dreams,” the role of “Pa,” played by Glenn Ford in Richard Donner’s 1978 “Superman,” seems likely. What little is known about the film suggests Costner also could play the role of Perry White, editor-in-chief of Metropolis mega-paper The Daily Planet , or General Zod, hinted as a companion to a rumored fellow Kryptonian villain. It’s possible Costner might even step into the shoes of fellow Oscar-winners Gene Hackman and Kevin Spacey to play archenemy Lex Luthor. Whoever he plays, Costner would be alongside Brit Henry Cavill , pegged to wear the Man of Steel tights in Snyder’s re-imagining. Fans recently got their first glimpse of “The Tudors” star on the cover of Entertainment Weekly sporting a T-shirt with the iconic Superman shield. Would you prefer to see Costner play a good guy or a villain? Sound off in the comments!
