Kelly Rowland Means Business With Here I Am

‘Motivation’ singer says she admires ‘artists like Chris Brown and Rihanna, who don’t mind putting it all on their album.’ By Jocelyn Vena Kelly Rowland Photo: Jason LaVeris/ FilmMagic Kelly Rowland is proudly declaring Here I Am on her new album, which dropped Tuesday (July 26). And while she’s always been a soulful R&B diva, the past few years, she’s carved out a place for herself among the dancing queens of the world. And, she said, there’s room for both of those characters on this latest release. “The personalities aren’t really different,” she explained to MTV News. “I think what I’ve grown to know about my voice is, just having a voice, period, as a woman, you mean business, period — whether that’s making people dance or that’s making people feel in an emotional way or whatever it might be when it comes to R&B. “I think that R&B, of course, is where I’m deeply rooted, period,” she continued. “I’ll never go anywhere. I just happened to try something out [dance], and it worked, and that’s just the part of it. And I think that’s what I admire about artists like Chris Brown and Rihanna, who don’t mind putting it all on their album. Who cares? It’s music, and they’re making it: great music. And I’m proud of that, that we do have a generation that is just making great music, period.” With features from the likes of “Motivation” collaborator Lil Wayne , Big Sean and Rico Love, to name a few, Rowland also got production help from heavy hitters such as Tricky Stewart, Jim Jonsin, David Guetta, RedOne and Rodney Jerkins. “Above anything, I got to work with creative people. We were in the same pocket sonically,” she explained. “And I got the chance to go back in with Rodney Jerkins, and we were just in a pocket together that … blew me away, period. And with Red[One] too, everybody. It was so much fun. I’m so happy with the project.” This album, for Rowland, was a balance of working with a new crop of producers and a familiar set of people. That combination helped her shape the many sides of herself. “Red didn’t meet me, but he was like, ‘I don’t think you are singing at your full capacity,’ ” she recalled. “We got into the studio, and when we finished the two records that we did together, I just looked at him and was like, ‘You get it?’ He gets it. “And Rodney’s been knowing me since I was 17 years old,” she continued. “Rodney comes into the studio, and he’s like, ‘Wait a minute: What’s happening [with your voice]?’ It’s really interesting how the two are not that far off, but they’re both great ears.” Share your review of Kelly Rowland’s new album in the comments below. Some Repeat Matrimony-Dom: Mike And Kiki Tyson Renew Their Vows At Surprise Pretent Birthday Party

Who knew Iron Mike Tyson had become so sentimental in his old age?? First, he’s crying in public . Now, TMZ reports Tyson and his wife of two years just went all out to renew their vows in a surprise ceremony. TMZ has learned … Tyson and his wife Lakiha invited hundreds of friends to a joint birthday party they threw for each other at the M Resort … but the b-day party was merely a cover for a secret vow renewal. After the guests arrived to the party, the couple disappeared … only to re-emerge behind a massive curtain … which dropped to reveal both Mike and Lahika dressed in wedding outfits. With the crowd completely surprised, the couple proceeded to renew their vows in a traditional Muslim ceremony. We’re told the two decided to do the big “wedding” party this time around because they skipped out on a celebration when they were secretly married at a small Vegas chapel back in 2009 … two weeks after Mike’s 4-year-old daughter passed away. Sources tell us the party was AWESOME — guests had their choice of a steak or chicken entree … and then they partied it up in the hotel’s ballroom with a live band. Ain’t that precious. Mazel Tov! Brandy Recalls Meeting Michael Jackson, On ‘When I Was 17’

On latest episode, airing Saturday at 11 a.m. ET, singer says she fainted after meeting the King of Pop. By James Dinh Brandy on “When I Was 17” Photo: MTV Sometimes celebrities get starstruck too — just ask Brandy. In the latest episode of “When I Was 17,” the singer-turned-reality starlet opens up about meeting Michael Jackson, thanks to producer Rodney Jerkins. “When I was 17, my producer Rodney Jerkins was working with Michael Jackson at the time,” Brandy says in the episode, premiering Saturday at 11 a.m. ET on MTV. “He knew how much I wanted to meet Michael Jackson, so he says, ‘Would you like to come and meet him?’ I’m like, ‘Are you serious? Of course I want to meet Michael Jackson! Where do I meet you? Where do we come?’ ” And it wasn’t just Jerkins who knew about the singer’s admiration for Jackson. “Michael Jackson was it, so we studied Michael. Brandy studied Michael,” her brother Ray J says. Brandy says the super-producer orchestrated the meeting between the siblings and Jackson at the recording studio. However, prior to entering the room, Brandy says nerves got the best of her. “My heart is beating so fast at this point,” the “Dancing With the Stars” alum recalls. “I’m like, ‘Oh my God. It’s happening. We’re about to open the door and he’s going to be in there.’ ” Ray J, who was equally excited, peeped around the room, saying, “When we first walked into the studio, we can kind of see Michael in the corner and we looked at each other like, ‘Did you see him?’ ” Unfortunately, Brandy, couldn’t maintain the same type as composure. “And I’m looking at him like, ‘Oh my God. This is Michael Jackson,’ ” adding, “I fainted, blacked out — like seriously blacked out.” “When I Was 17” airs Saturdays at 11 a.m. ET on MTV. Related Artists Brandy

Britney Spears Works With Travis Barker For Femme Fatale

After Rodney Jerkins discusses ‘out-of-the-box’ track, a rep for Barker confirms collabo to MTV News. By James Montgomery Britney Spears Photo: Courtesy of Zomba Records In a recent interview with MTV News, producer Rodney Jerkins said that, on her upcoming Femme Fatale album, Britney Spears got “hands-on,” supplying him with “a lot of ideas” and helping shape the energetic sound of the project. “She’s great. She gets it,” Jerkins said. “She is a top-notch veteran pro at this now.” So it should probably come as no surprise that, somewhere along the line, Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker came to be involved in recording the album — because, while we’re not sure if bringing him onboard was Britney’s idea, he is most certainly the kind who can bring the energy. And, as Jerkins said in a recent sit-down with Headline News’ “Showbiz Tonight,” the experience of working with Spears and Barker was a new one for everyone involved. “I’m really excited. … I did two songs on her album, and one of the songs I did, I brought in Travis Barker, and it’s got this rock feel which is out of the box, out of my norm, and I think it’s out of her norm as well,” Jerkins said. “We had a great time making this record.” Jerkins didn’t elaborate on much else about the Barker song or Britney’s album, saying only that the project is “classic Britney spears, uptempo heavy, of course. It’s new and different.” A spokesperson for Barker confirmed to MTV News that the collaboration happened “about a month ago” but, much like Jerkins, wouldn’t reveal any additional details of the song. Spears’ Femme Fatale is due March 29. What do you think of Britney Spears’ new music? Let us know in the comments! Chris Medina Calls Post-‘American Idol’ Single ‘Heartfelt’

‘He was really good in the studio,’ producer Rodney Jerkins recalls of recording ‘What Are Words.’ By Kara Warner, with additional reporting by Jim Cantiello Chris Medina Photo: MTV News While Chris Medina’s exit from “American Idol” is still a shock to many fans, the fact that the early favorite has already lined up his first post-“Idol” project (by way of super-producer Rodney Jerkins and the single “What Are Words”) should alleviate the burn. MTV News was lucky enough to catch up with both Medina and Jerkins recently to get the inside scoop on the heartfelt track. “I always knew who Rodney Jerkins was, but after doing some research, I didn’t realize how ‘the man’ he actually was,” Medina explained of his reaction to getting a phone call two days after his unexpected elimination. “I got a call on Friday and then that Monday I recorded,” he said. “It was surreal. It was great.” Medina went on to say that while the song isn’t technically his style, it’s not entirely out of his “wheelhouse.” “The words totally embody what my situation is,” he said. “It’s heartfelt, it’s real, and it was an honor to be asked to put my voice to this wonderful material.” For his part, Jerkins, who was inspired to write the song after seeing Medina’s first audition, said the 26-year-old was a total pro during their recording session. “He was really good in the studio,” Jerkins said. “That’s always the fearful moment for myself as a producer. The first time you work with a new artist [you wonder], ‘What is it going to sound like when you get in the studio?’ “[Medina] came in here and he listened to it one time down and then he was like, ‘I think I got it.’ He started singing it for us in the room, and we were just floored,” Jerkins recalled. “Like, ‘Wow,’ he learned it that fast. I’m like, ‘OK, it’s time for you to get in the booth.’ He was great.” Regarding the higher vocals Medina uses in the track, Jerkins said that is all about his technique of challenging his artists. “A lot of technology has made it where we don’t push the artist like we used to,” he said. “I’m a ’90s guy. I come from the school of the ’90s, where you didn’t have Auto-Tune, we didn’t have the tricks of technology. You had to get in there and work the artist and get the best out of them, and that’s what we did.” Don’t miss “Idol Party Live” at 10 p.m. Thursday on MTV.com, following the “American Idol” results show, for analysis, celebrity guests and even some karaoke. Britney Spears ‘Very Hands-On’ For Femme Fatale, Rodney Jerkins Says

‘She had a lot of ideas for me,’ producer says of pop star’s new album. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Kara Warner Britney Spears’ Femme Fatale Photo: Jive Britney Spears is a month away from the release of Femme Fatale, and nearly every day, she’s teasing fans with samples of some of the songs on the album, including the latest, her song with will.i.am, “The Big Fat Bass.” Now, longtime collaborator Rodney Jerkins is opening up about hitting the studio with Spears. “Britney’s always great to work with. I’ve worked with Britney for 12, 13 years now,” he told MTV News. “It’s always great to work with someone when you work with someone time and time again; it’s always great, and it always gets better. And just to see her evolve as an artist, it’s an amazing, amazing thing.” Jerkins worked with Spears in the past on “Overprotected (Darkchild Remix)” and “I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll” in the early 2000s, as well as her leaked version of Lady Gaga’s “Telephone,” when she was recording Circus. This time around, he said Spears knows exactly what she wants musically on the album. “She was very hands-on. She had a lot of ideas for me,” he said. “She’s great. She gets it. She is a top-notch veteran pro at this now.” She might be getting some help from Jerkins, but Dr. Luke and Max Martin are executive-producing the album, and Jerkins had nothing but the best to say about the production team. “I never spoke to them, [but] those guys are just great, and the stuff that they’ve been doing is just really, really great stuff,” he said. “I’m sure with their hands on it, it’s great.” Spears herself has described the album as “moody, edgy pop with A LOT of energy,” hinting that many of the songs will be uptempo, and Jerkins noted that the songs he’s been writing for her have certainly fit that label. “I know the songs that I do are uptempo,” he said. “The stuff I’ve done, I think, will kind of shock people. I got a chance to go out my box a little bit too. She’s great. Britney’s just awesome.” What are you expecting from Britney’s new music? Let us know in the comments! Is Lady Gaga the Next Michael Jackson?

Musician Lady Gaga arrives at Billboard’s 4th Annual Women In Music event at The Pierre Hotel on October 2, 2009 in New York City. Gaga is definitely on fire right now — with sold-out shows across the world, a huge fan following, crazy music videos, and an even crazier wardrobe — so some might say she’ll be one of those one-in-a-million performers who goes down in history in a big way, like Michael jackson Gaga’s producer Rodney Jerkins, who worked with her on her latest song “Telephone,” which got about a billion views on the internet yesterday, said she reminds him of the late King of Pop, whom he worked with on the “Thriller” singers 2001 album Invincible . Michael Jackson Rodney told People.com: “We haven’t seen an artist like Gaga in a long time – we haven’t seen an artist that really has no fear. I remember Michael Jackson used to tell me he was crucified for doing Thriller , but he had to do what he felt was needed at that time. I’m just happy to be part of history. I’ve always wanted to leave my stamp on music, and to be able to say that I worked with Michael Jackson and now I’m working with Lady Gaga, who’ll probably go down in history as one of the best female entertainers of all time .” He also talked about how he found the initial task of marrying together the “street” sound which Beyonce, who sings a verse of “Telephone,” wanted with the disco theme the rest of the track has. Rodney explained: “When I got on the phone with Beyonce, she was telling me she wanted her verses to have a hood, street element, and I actually was caught off-guard. I wondered, ‘How am I going to do that? How am I going to make a disco/techno record and create a hood, street anthem vibe for her verse?’ But once I got to the studio, it just kind of came to me.” Continue reading
