If you follow this site, you know I’ve expressed quite a bit of skepticism about Guillermo del Toro ‘s upcoming giant-robots-and-monsters movie, Pacific Rim . But that was before I saw this trailer that was unveiled at Wondercon in Las Vegas earlier this month. This clip answers a lot of lot of FAQs about the plot and how the human pilots operate the Jaeger robots in tandem, although it does make me wonder how they ingest that yellow mind-meld fluid so quickly and keep from bugling it right back into their helmets. Better yet, this clip finally torques up the dramatic tension to a level more befitting of a movie this ambitious and big. We get more of the human element, in the form of two Charlies — Hunnam & Day — a relatively civil Idris Elba , Rinko Kikuchi and a pimped-out Ron Perlman . And The Kaiju (monsters) finally look fierce and fast, and the scene of the Jaeger collapsing on the beach is a nice dramatic touch, as is the one where the Jaeger takes a tanker upside the head of one of the glowing creatures. ” Go Big or Go Extinct ” is also a lovely tag line. ‘Pacific Rim’ — Finally! A Trailer That Kicks Some Monster Ass
My palms get sweaty just watching this extended clip of what I hear is one of the most riveting sequences in Iron Man 3 . Tony Stark ( Robert Downey Jr .) has to suit up in a jiff and attempt to save 13 flailing, screaming people who’ve been sucked out of what looks like a crippled Air Force One . (If that’s the case, it will be the first of two times the Presidential airliner gets blowed up this summer season. The trailer for Roland Emmerich ‘s White House Down shows the plane’s wing being blown off. But I digress. Although those two unlucky souls who hit the plane’s fuselage on the way out should probably be dead as a result of the impact, Shellhead’s valiant attempt to rescue everyone when Jarvis is telling him he can only handle four sure does make for some effective dramatic tension. How his first save, Heather , can hear Stark above her own (justified) screaming and the wind is beyond me, but I’m suspending disbelief. The “I’ll electrify your arm and you won’t be able to open your hand” is a nice expository touch, too. Check it out: We can do this, Heather! Until today, I thought Legendary Pictures ‘ effort to make yet another contemporary Godzilla reboot was a seriously misguided idea. I know that almost 15 years have passed since Roland Emmerich’s 1998 take on the reptilian Japanese scream queen hit theaters, but that movie was such a dark, senseless and empty mess that it effectively killed my once fervent love of the big-ass monster genre. Okay, so there were other contributing factors, too, like terrorists in planes who managed to knock down the two largest buildings in New York. When that happens, big mutant lizards don’t exactly cut it anymore. But I digress. Emmerich’s Godzilla debuted three years before 9/11, and the thing that’s most infuriating about the movie is his tiresomely conventional attempt to top the original Japanese movies by just making his reboot bigger, noisier and more Godzilla -ier. The same goes for Diddy, then Sean Puff Daddy Combs, who contributed an equally bombastic song to the soundtrack, “Come With Me,” that, as far as I’m concerned is a sacrilegious use of Jimmy Page’s great guitar riff from Led Zeppelin’s “Kashmir.” (Page apparently didn’t think so at the time. He appeared in the crap-tastic video for the song, which references the 1993 World Trade Center bombing.) The more ambitious thing to do would have been to mine the campier, Mystery Science Theater 3000 – worthy elements of the Godzilla movies, such the Peanuts, the Japanese twin-sister singing group who played the tiny priestesses that were able to communicate with Godzilla’s winged rival, Mothra . But who am I kidding? Emmerich doesn’t deal in subtlety or wit. The reality is, that whether it’s Emmerich’s fault or not, movies about giant mutant creatures terrorizing a city or town don’t move the needle anymore unless they think smaller — on a human scale. J.J. Abrams’ Super 8 and the Abrams-produced Matt Reeves-directed Cloverfield worked for that very reason. The monsters in those films were really catalysts for interesting human drama. To a lesser extent, I felt the same way about Gareth Edwards’ Monsters , so my interest was piqued when he was hired to direct Godzilla and, at Comic Con last summer, promised “a grounded and realistic film that isn’t particularly sci-fi,” according to a CinemaBlend post at the time. Well, to paraphrase Leonardo DiCaprio’s signature line in Django Unchained , Legendary had my curiosity, but now they have my attention with the news, reported by Deadline , that Frank Darabont is rewriting the Godzilla script. The beauty of The Walking Dead under Darabont was that the human conflict and relationships taking place over the first two seasons of the AMC series was way more compelling than the creative zombie deaths. Each of the survivors was a distinct, fully fleshed character that I grew to care about over the course of the series, and that made their peril all the more intense and terrifying. Factor in the excellent script Darabont wrote for The Shawshank Redemption and, although the odds are pretty steep, if anyone can make me care about big-ass mutant lizard again, it’s him. Quite likely cinema’s first Shakespearean conspiracy thriller-meets-royal romance fable, Anonymous features Rhys Ifans as Edward De Vere — the Duke of Oxford long considered a front-runner for having authored many (if not all) of the plays attributed to William Shakespeare. It’s a role that even the charismatic Welsh actor wasn’t sure he would lock down before encountering director Roland Emmerich, the erstwhile apocalypse visionary whose boldness made a fine complement to Ifans’s own.

‘Found footage’ sequel beats out ‘Footloose’ and ‘Real Steel’ and breaks record previously held by ‘Jackass 3D.’ By Ryan J. Downey Katie Featherston and Sprague Grayden in “Paranormal Activity 3” Photo: Paramount Pictures Moviegoers were feeling the Halloween “spirit” over the weekend. “Paranormal Activity 3” broke the box-office record for the biggest fall opening with an estimated $54 million debut, passing “Jackass 3-D” to become the highest-grossing September/October opening ever. Meanwhile, “The Three Musketeers,” “Johnny English Reborn” and “The Mighty Macs” all underperformed. Both “Real Steel” and the remake of “Footloose” held strong over the weekend. Hugh Jackman’s robot action adventure was #2 with $11.3 million for a $67.2 million total, with “Footloose” right behind at #3 with $10.9 million for a $30.9 million total. Roughly 55 percent of “The Three Musketeers” $8.8 million debut, which landed the film at #4 at the box office, can be attributed to its more expensive 3-D screening ticket prices. Co-star Milla Jovovich made entertainment news headlines with a flurry of tweets questioning the promotion effort behind the flick on the part of distributor Summit Entertainment, which also handles the “Twilight” franchise. “I think ‘summit’ have swept ‘3 Musketeers’, a grt family adventure film, under the rug in the US. Shame on them,” the actress declared in one of several tweets unleashed on Friday. The film, directed by Jovovich’s husband, Paul W.S. Anderson, was dismissed by most film critics. “An editorial mess, an atonal wreck, and a huge waste of cash from inception to release,” Scott Weinberg at Twitch wrote. “The Ides of March” rounded out the top five with $4.9 million. The George Clooney-directed political feature has earned $29.2 million to date. While the comedy “Johnny English Reborn” has done respectable business internationally, it made just $3.8 million during its first weekend in North American theaters. “The Mighty Macs” made just over $1 million, although it played in less than a third of the locations as “Paranormal Activity 3.” Lizzie Olsen’s “Martha Marcy May Marlene” got off to a strong start at just four locations in New York and Los Angeles, taking in a respectable per-theater average of $34,385. Lizzie is the sister of Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. Next weekend’s new releases include Johnny Depp’s “The Rum Diary,” “Shrek” spin-off “Puss in Boots,” Justin Timberlake’s “In Time” and director Roland Emmerich’s “Anonymous.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Paranormal Activity 3” and “Footloose.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . The Toronto Film Festival is a world away from Venice , and the difference is especially acute when you hop from one to the other: Toronto is big and glossy, while Venice is intimate and glowing — it’s like the difference between lacquer and gold leaf. But each has its own appeal, and the scale of Toronto is appealing by itself. It’s a little overwhelming but exhilarating, too.

15 years ago, Will Smith,Vivica A. Foxx, Bill Pullman and Jeff Goldblum starred in an epic film that would change and set the standard for Blockbuster movies. Legendary filmmaker Roland Emmerich directed the 145 minute event that generated $104.3 million in it the first week of opening breaking the record once held by Jurassic Park. Will Smith’s character, Captain Steven Hiller saves the world after an alien attack that almost claimed the life of his girlfriend (Vivica Foxx), whom was lucky enough to escape with her life unlike most others who perished after the invaders unleashed their laser like weapons. President Thomas J. Whitmore (Bill Pullman) lead the U.S army to victory against the aliens in the final scenes of Independence Day. The first Independence Day trailer debuted during Super Bowl XXX which costed $1.3 million out of a $30 million promotion campaign. “The shot of the White House’s destruction has been declared a milestone in visual effects and one of the most memorable scenes of the 1990s.” Independence Day has grossed (Domestically and Internationally) $816,969,268 million. It might be a good time to stock up on canned goods, friends. Hours before the ball dropped on New Year’s Eve, residents of Beebe, Arkansas were shocked when more than 2,000 dead birds fell from the sky . “It was horrible,” said Beebe resident Melissa Weatherly , obviously. “You could not even get down the road without running over hundreds. It was that bad.” Though maybe not as bad as finding 100,000 dead fish washed ashore just 125 miles away.
