Black Art History Initiative Launched By The Getty Institute

T he Getty Institute is working to preserve rich and historic Black artwork. According to the New York Times , the Los Angeles-based institution announced the creation of a new program that is centered on research surrounding African American artists and their work. The Getty to Start a Research Center for African-American Art. We're honored to be a partner institution. https://t.co/GiKkZKzqDg — CAAM (@CAAMinLA) September 25, 2018 Dubbed the African American Art History Initiative, the research center will focus on acquiring pieces and spearheading research projects that will provide more context about artists connected to the African Diaspora, the news outlet writes. The institute will team up with museums and organizations to push the research forward. Amongst institutions that they will partner with include Spelman College, Art+Practice, the California African American Museum and the Studio Museum in Harlem. “The study of African American art history is fundamental to a comprehensive understanding of American art history. We aim to bring our resources, talents, and relationships together to promote advanced research in an area of American art that has been underfunded and under researched,” James Cuno , president and CEO of the J. Paul Getty Trust said in a statement . The project has a budget of $5 million. One of the first acquisitions under the initiative is the work of assemblage artist Betye Saar . “Saar is one of the major African-American artists in the region, somebody whom artists like John Outterbridge and David Hammons look up to. And she was born in 1926, so to start with something this wide-ranging is wonderful,” historian and project consultant Kellie Jones told the news outlet. She also added that the collaborative aspect of the project will “help move important archives out into other facets of the contemporary art world, whether the classroom or the museum.” There has been an ongoing effort—especially on the West Coast—to preserve historic elements of Black culture. Earlier this year, the African American Museum & Library at Oakland received a grant that will allow them to digitize rare footage of protests that took place during the 60s and 70s. Shade Files: Kenya Moore Blasts ‘Bitter’ Sheree For Dissing Moore Manor

Kenya Moore Blasts Sheree Whitfield For Dissing More Manor Kenya Moore and Sheree Whitfield are keeping their battle of the McMansions alive and well. Kenya recently took to her BravoTV  blog to brag about her self-built home that’s  of course”much” better than Chateau Sheree. My favorite part of Moore Manor is that it feels like my home — my style, my taste, and my overall design aesthetic. I sold my contemporary home in California I owned for approximately 16 years and rented the first 3 years when I moved to Atlanta. Living in them felt foreign. Your house should be your signature style, and now that it is, I couldn’t be happier. She also recounted episode 1 of the new season when Sheree Whitfield stopped by her housewarming party and shaded her home because it was still under construction. According to Kenya Sheree has no room to talk considering that she built Moore Manor in less than a year and Chateau Sheree is still underway. “I thought Sheree would be happy to see how far I’ve come, but all she was capable of doing was tearing it down.” Bravotv.com: Were you surprised that Sheree was throwing shade at Moore Manor? KM : That would be a resounding NO. Quite frankly, Sheree seems bitter and embarrassed that I purchased a home and nearly built it from the ground up in less than a year, while she still has not completed her home in 5 years as of last week. After all, I had no plumbing, air, heat, electrical, flooring… I didn’t even have a front door. Yet I managed to complete my home and move in before the second coming of Christ. I acknowledge I had an extensive “punch out list” prior to my housewarming to complete. With that said, I set a date and was determined not to cancel or change it. I did, however, explain to my select guests that I wasn’t completely finished. I asked for positive energy and for the closest people to me to bless my home and applaud my accomplishment. I thought Sheree would be happy to see how far I’ve come, but all she was capable of doing was tearing it down. Does Kenya have a point???  She did build Moore Manor very quickly. More of Kenya’s words on the flip.

The Green Trial: Can Frank Darabont Make ‘Godzilla’ Matter Again?

Until today, I thought Legendary Pictures ‘ effort to make yet another contemporary Godzilla  reboot was a seriously misguided idea. I know that almost 15 years have passed since Roland Emmerich’s 1998 take on the reptilian Japanese scream queen hit theaters, but that movie was such a dark, senseless and empty mess that it effectively killed my once fervent love of the big-ass monster genre.    Okay, so there were other  contributing factors, too, like terrorists in planes who managed to knock down the two largest buildings in New York. When that happens, big mutant lizards don’t exactly cut it anymore. But I digress. Emmerich’s Godzilla debuted three years before 9/11, and the thing that’s most infuriating about the movie is his tiresomely conventional attempt to top the original Japanese movies by just making his reboot bigger, noisier and more Godzilla -ier.  The same goes for Diddy, then Sean Puff Daddy Combs, who contributed an equally bombastic song to the soundtrack, “Come With Me,” that, as far as I’m concerned is a sacrilegious use of Jimmy Page’s great guitar riff from Led Zeppelin’s “Kashmir.”  (Page apparently didn’t think so at the time. He appeared in the crap-tastic video for the song, which references the 1993 World Trade Center bombing.) The more ambitious thing to do would have been to mine the campier, Mystery Science Theater 3000 – worthy   elements of the Godzilla movies, such the Peanuts, the Japanese twin-sister singing group who played the tiny priestesses that were able to communicate with Godzilla’s winged rival, Mothra . But who am I kidding? Emmerich doesn’t deal in subtlety or wit. The reality is, that whether it’s Emmerich’s fault or not, movies about giant mutant creatures terrorizing a city or town don’t move the needle anymore unless they think smaller — on a human scale.  J.J. Abrams’  Super 8    and the Abrams-produced Matt Reeves-directed Cloverfield  worked for that very reason. The monsters in those films were really catalysts for interesting human drama. To a lesser extent, I felt the same way about Gareth Edwards’  Monsters , so my interest was piqued when he was hired to direct Godzilla and, at Comic Con last summer, promised “a grounded and realistic film that isn’t particularly sci-fi,” according to a  CinemaBlend post  at the time. Well, to paraphrase Leonardo DiCaprio’s signature line in Django Unchained , Legendary had my curiosity, but now they have my attention with the news, reported by Deadline , that Frank Darabont is rewriting the Godzilla script.  The beauty of The Walking Dead   under Darabont was that the human conflict and relationships taking place over the first two seasons of the AMC series was way more compelling than the creative zombie deaths. Each of the survivors was a distinct, fully fleshed character that I grew to care about over the course of the series, and that made their peril all the more intense and terrifying. Factor in the excellent script Darabont wrote for The Shawshank Redemption and, although the odds are pretty steep, if anyone can make me care about big-ass mutant lizard again, it’s him.
