Nicki Minaj’s ‘Starships’ Video ‘May Be Too Saucy For TV’

Rapper says the clip is done and should drop next week. By John Mitchell Nicki Minaj Photo: Getty Images Apparently, getting it just right is more important than keeping it especially timely. Nicki Minaj ‘s smash single “Starships” has been burning up the Billboard Hot 100 for nine weeks now, peaking at #5 a few weeks back and currently holding it down at #7. The pop-dance track was the official lead single (“Roman Holiday” and “Stupid Hoe” were promo singles) from her new album Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, which debuted at #1 two weeks back. All of which makes the fact that there’s been no official video release for the buzz-heavy track seem all the more glaring. Heck, she’s already released the video for “Beez in the Trap,” technically the album’s third single after “Starships” and “Right by My Side” featuring Chris Brown. So when will we finally see the “Starships” video? Pretty soon, according to Minaj. “It’s officially done,” Nicki told the U.K.’s Capital FM . “There was just one tiny little thing I wanted to change, but I know at the beginning of next week you guys will see it.” But watch out, Nicki warns: “It may be too saucy for TV.” Pictures of the rap/pop superstar hard at work on the clip surfaced in mid-March, showing Nicki looking amazing while sporting green hair and a pink bikini as she filmed in an exotic location. At the time, Minaj told MTV News that seeing girls sporting her unique style has been an exciting byproduct of her fame. “I guess I am pop culture, just because what I’m doing seems to be popular. When people want to do what you’re doing, it’s kinda popular,” she said. “I don’t ask girls to wear pink hair; they just do it. It’s not about black or white; I think it’s just a statement. It doesn’t matter which color you are; it’s just a statement of being fearless.” What are you expecting from Nicki’s “Starships” video? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Nicki Minaj

Nicki Minaj Shows Off ‘Big Talent’ On ‘Starships’

‘We did something really fresh that’s out of this world,’ producer RedOne tells MTV News about working on Minaj’s Roman Reloaded. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Kara Warner Nicki Minaj Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Nicki Minaj channels her inner-pop princess on her new single “Starships,” which dropped Tuesday (February 14). The track certainly sounds like it would fit in perfectly on pop radio, nestled in between hits by Britney Spears and Katy Perry. “Starships” is a fist-pumping anthem about having a good time. Produced by RedOne, it is certainly the perfect song for those who enjoyed shaking their groove thang to “Super Bass.” The lighthearted, feel-good vibe of the song is perfect for casual Barbz to blast. It’s hard not to see Spears’ influence on the rapper/singer when listening to the song, and given that the two toured together last year, Minaj may be trying to remind her pop fans that she has an ear for what they want. MTV News recently caught up with RedOne, who had only the kindest words for the Brooklyn-bred MC. “Working with Nicki is amazing, ’cause she’s so talented,” he said. “There’s nothing that inspires me more than raw, really good talent, big talent. I see that in Nicki, and of course, she’s proven to be who she is.” The song not only is pure pop perfection, but RedOne’s influence is evident, thanks to its grinding Euro dance beats. “For me, [it was] a beautiful experience,” he said. “There’s a lot of love there. We respect each other a lot, and I think it’s really key. We’ve done a few songs, and I think it’s going to be very, very special. I’m excited.” “Starships” serves as a tease to what the super-producer and Minaj are cooking up in the studio, but RedOne promises some surprises. “I think we did something really fresh that’s out of this world,” he said. “I’m really excited for the world to hear what we’ve done together.” The love is certainly mutual. Minaj recently dished about the creation of the song. “There was so much love surrounding the making of the song, because RedOne is just so sweet to work with,” Minaj said. “He just sent me that one day, and he said, ‘Hey, I got something for you!’ I was like, ‘You got to be kidding me, right?’ I went to the studio and started writing … scratch that … I didn’t even write the first verse! That was just me mumbling and just saying the first thing that came to my head, and we recorded it, because I just felt like: ‘Let’s go to the beach … let’s go get away.’ It was just so good. It feels good!” “Starships” is the latest track from Minaj’s April 1 release, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded. On Sunday, she gave fans an over-the-top taste of “Roman Holiday” when she performed it during the Grammys. Are you excited to hear more new Nicki music? Let us know in the comments! Nicki Minaj’s New Single “Starships”: Listen

Nicki Minaj Drops Fist-Pumping ‘Starships’ Single

‘There was so much love surrounding the making of the song,’ she says about Roman Reloaded track. By Jocelyn Vena Nicki Minaj Photo: Jason Merritt/Getty Images Nicki Minaj channels her inner pop princess for her just-released single “Starships.” The fist-pumping song dropped on Tuesday (February 14), and it’s club-ready and poised for crossover success. Thanks to its bouncy beat, Minaj’s sing-songy chorus and producer RedOne’s eye for Euro house-influenced pop music, Minaj may have a new “Super Bass.” It’s a blast of pop goodness in which Nicki raps and sings about partying and doing what feels good for you. The song is also full of signature Minaj sass and bravado. “Starships were meant to fly/ Hands up and touch the sky/ Can’t stop ’cause we’re so high/ Let’s do this one more time,” she declares on the feel-good chorus, before it repeats and evolves to a smashing, dance-floor-busting grind of beats, shouts and noises that are certain to get her Barbz on the floor. Minaj shines like a pop star the likes of Britney Spears, Katy Perry and Jennifer Lopez on the genre-busting track. But the song is also signature RedOne thanks to his keen ear for world music. That influence is felt on the song’s breakdowns, which recall smashes he’s made for J.Lo and Enrique Iglesias. “There was so much love surrounding the making of the song, because RedOne is just so sweet to work with,” Minaj told Ryan Seacrest . “He just sent me that one day and he said, ‘Hey, I got something for you!’ I was like ‘You got to be kidding me, right?’ I went to the studio and started writing … scratch that … I didn’t even write the first verse! That was just me mumbling and just saying the first thing that came to my head, and we recorded it, because I just felt like, let’s go to the beach … let’s go get away. It was just so good. It feels good!” “Starship” is the latest track to get a preview before Nicki drops Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded on April 1. On Sunday she gave fans an over-the-top taste of “Roman Holiday” when she performed it during the Grammy Awards . During the interview with Seacrest, Minaj shared that Reloaded will focus on the many sides of Nicki — and it’s clear “Starships” shows her pop side. “I’ve never had this much fun recording music in my life. My first album, I was very guarded,” she said. “I felt like I was making music to please everyone else. I had to be politically correct, but this album I am just creating music, and there’s such a big difference. Literally, in the studio we were cracking up laughing, having fun and enjoying ourselves. The music itself, you’re going to get every side that I’ve ever shown and then a little bit extra. I’ve tried to make it very, very balanced, because I don’t ever want to be boxed in, and that’s always what drives me. So I made a very diverse album.” Related Artists Nicki Minaj
