T he creators behind Napa Valley’s first Black-owned winery estate are continuing to make monumental moves in the wine and spirits industry. According to the Philadelphia Tribune , Brown Estate Vineyards has inked a deal with Delta Air Lines to have its wine collection available on their flights. Delta Airlines is ending Black History Month on a high note. The airline is partnering with Brown Estate Winery, the first black-owned winery Napa Valley. https://t.co/qs4XZ8QxgD — Blavity News (@Blavity) March 1, 2019 The partnership between the airline and the winery is a part of Delta’s effort to take a more inclusive approach in regards to the vendors that the company works with. The brand was introduced to Delta by Carlyne Scott who serves as a member on the company’s Black community business resource group. Initially, Brown Estate’s products were featured on a Delta flight from San Francisco to New York as part of a Black History Month special, but leaders at the airline decided that they wanted to take the partnership further. On Tuesday, Delta announced that Brown Estate wines will become one of their suppliers during the 2019-2020 winter season. The leadership team at Delta is excited to bring the brand on board. “Partnering with innovative, diverse suppliers from certified small-, minority- and women-owned businesses like Brown Estate is fundamental to Delta’s strategy to keep climbing year-round,” Heather Ostis , Vice President of Supply Chain Management, Delta Air Lines, said in a statement. “Seeking employee perspectives and leveraging unique ideas brings us closer to meeting that goal, while creating the highest quality experience for our customers.” Deneen Brown —who founded the company with her siblings 24 years ago and now serves as president of Brown Estate Vineyards—says that this is a major win for her and her family and is excited to partner with Delta. “We are delighted to partner with Delta Air Lines,” said Brown. “Delta’s all-in commitments to the spirit of inclusion and to their wine program are perfectly aligned with our core values at Brown Estate.” Brown Estate Vineyards is not only the first but the only Black-owned winery estate in Napa Valley, California. There is a need for more representation in the wine industry. Research shows that less than 5 percent of wineries in the U.S. are Black-owned. According to the Detroit Free Press , Smith is using his platform as an avenue for activism and bringing a water filtration system to the city. Jaden Smith's foundation has collaborated with a church to design and engineer a new way to bring cleaner water to Flint, Michigan. https://t.co/N4epKbgIi6 — NBCWashington (@nbcwashington) March 1, 2019 The 20-year-old is leading the effort through his company JUST Goods Inc. The company—which is an eco-friendly natural spring water brand—is joining forces with Flint’s First Trinity Missionary Baptist Church to implement a system called “The Water Box” which can help reduce lead and other toxic chemicals in contaminated water. The Water Boxes are engineered through digital devices. Aside from his passion for the arts, Smith has been a fierce advocate for environmentalism. “I want to have something I can feel good about that I can feel like it’s changing the world. I’m not only being neutral with the world, I’m actually making the world a better place,” he said when asked about his water brand during an interview with Highsnobiety . “That’s when I was like, if I can feel that way, that would be amazing. But then if everybody else could feel that way, that’s a dream come true. I’ve just always wanted to be an advocate of humanity.” The First Trinity Missionary Baptist Church has been dedicated to addressing the water issue in Flint. According to the news outlet, the church has given over 5 million bottles of water to local residents. This isn’t the first time that Smith has led philanthropic efforts in Flint. According to the Huffington Post , last year his company vowed to donate water each month to the city’s schools until the water was safe to drink. Thousands of bottles were donated. Source: Marco Quintarelli / EyeEm / Getty Church Bishop Arrested For Raping His Own Daughter Mathew Gibson , whose father, Ben T. Gibson, is the head of Progressive Baptist Church in Brownsville, is accused of raping his own daughter between 2013 and 2017 when she visited on the weekends, police sources confirmed with The New York Post . The girl, now 14, kept quiet about what was happening — but recently told her brother, who is her legal guardian. He immediately went to police. The teen told police that Gibson would abuse her in various rooms inside the church. Gibson, 44, was arrested last Thursday around 5:50 p.m. at an East New York homeless shelter at Forbell Street and Conduit Boulevard where he’d been living. Gibson is charged with sexual abuse of a child, incest and child endangerment. He is being held on $10,000 bail with another court date on Tuesday. According to Myia Maples , the wife of the alleged victim’s brother, Gibson had been working in the church as a bishop. In a now viral Facebook post, the unsettled wife came to tears, asking for help from viewers. She says she wants the church to be shut down and treated as a crime scene. Myia also says that for years, after the victim’s mother died, her husband has been going through the court system to get the father’s rights revoked after they both suspected him of physically abusing the teen. She says the news of the alleged abuse was shocking. The teen blurted it out one day after confiding in her brother about her dislike for boys at school. She also says she has the father’s confession to the sexual assaults against his daughter on tape. Myia Maples is determined to get the church shut down as they seek justice for the unnamed young woman. So sad.
N ashville police defended the white officer seen shooting a fleeing Black man in the back on a video released Wednesday (Aug. 8), as the Black community demanded justice. See Also: The Disturbing, Growing Trend of Police Fatally Shooting Suspects In The Back Without Consequence James Smallwood , president of the Nashville Fraternal Order of Police, argued Wednesday at a press conference that the video doesn’t “paint a complete image of what occurred that day,” the Tennessean reported. He underscored the police report that said Daniel Hambrick had a gun when Officer Andrew Delke shot him on July 26, adding that Delke made an “absolutely necessary and reasonable” snap decision. Meanwhile, after viewing the same video, community members met Wednesday night at the Jefferson Street Missionary Baptist Church and demanded an immediate shakeup of the police department. “I think [Police Chief Steve] Anderson needs to resign or the mayor needs to let him go,” the Rev. James Turner II said. Thankful for my squad. Got me through today without cursing out every politician in sight who voted against @OversightNow , ignored demands for Jocques, + the black preachers who continue to aide in this insanely traumatic cycle. #DanielHambrick https://t.co/3mZFKn2nrv — Gicola A. Lane (@GicolaLane) August 9, 2018 Delke approached the vehicle Hambrick was in, believing that it was the same car he saw earlier that day driving erratically, according to police investigators. Hambrick, 25, and two others fled from the officer. Surveillance video, released by the prosecutor, shows 25-year-old Delke chasing Hambrick. The officer opens fire on Hambrick, who does not appear to turn toward Delke. After firing multiple times, the officer circles the dying man while continuing to point his weapon at him. While the police alleged that Hambrick had a gun, the video does not appear to show him carrying a weapon. Hambrick’s family wants the officer charged. “The police officer fired four times, three of those bullets ripped Daniel apart. He fell to the ground, where he was cuffed and left, left there like a dog. Worse than a dog,” said Jo Kimbrough , attorney for the Hambrick’s family. “I’m a criminal defense attorney. If there is ever a case of premeditated first degree murder, this is it,” the lawyer continued. A truck bomb that exploded in Somalia has left more than 300 dead and hundreds more seriously injured, becoming “one of the most lethal terrorist acts anywhere in the world for many years,” according to The Guardian . The death toll was expected to become higher since people were still missing, Abdikadir Abdirahman , director of Amin ambulances, said. “One hundred and sixty of the bodies could not be recognised and so they were buried by the government [on Sunday],” Aden Nur , a Madina hospital doctor, said. “The others were buried by their relatives. Over a hundred injured were also brought here.” The U.S. mission to Somalia stated “such cowardly attacks reinvigorate the commitment of the United States to assist our Somali and African Union partners to combat the scourge of terrorism.” Somalia Explosion: • At least 231 people killed • At least 275 people injured • Truck bomb exploded in Mogadishu https://t.co/DX13sCzWMt pic.twitter.com/23dYcjatfS — BuzzFeed News (@BuzzFeedNews) October 15, 2017 I n a full-page ad that appeared in Sunday’s edition of The Washington Post , Hustler publisher Larry Flynt says he’ll pay $10 million to anyone who can provide information leading to the impeachment of 45 . “Did he make some financial quid pro quo with the Russians?” the ad asks. “Has the business of the United States been compromised to protect the business of the Trump empire? We need to flush everything out into the open.” Like many of us, Flynt is tired, and he wants to see the president finally face consequences for “compromising domestic and foreign policy with his massive conflicts-of-interest global business empire,” “telling hundreds of bald-faced lies,” and exercising “gross nepotism” via the “appointment of unqualified persons to high office.” “Impeachment would be a messy, contentious affair, but the alternative — three more years of destabilizing dysfunction — is worse,” Flynt concluded. “ . . .
