Steven Spielberg Hoped To Direct James Bond – But Got A ‘No’

It’s hard to imagine Steven Spielberg getting a ‘No,’ but that’s just what happened back in the day when he went sniffing around taking on James Bond . But this was back in the late ’70s and he had yet to make some of his biggest pics. The lure of 007 prompted the Jaws director to ask Bond producers if he could direct an installment. “I went to Cubby Broccoli and I asked if I could do one and he said: ‘No,'” Spielberg told the U.K.’s Daily Mail . But, as legions of audiences know, Spielberg didn’t let the disappointment keep him from bigger and better things. He took on some franchises of his own and is of course in line for an Oscar nomination or two for his latest feature. “I never asked again,” he recalled. “Instead, I made the Indiana Jones series.” Still, he’s a 007 fan and heaped praise on the latest Bond, giving kudos to Sam Mendes’ Skyfall , which has cumed over $790 million worldwide since it first hit release in late October, followed by early November in the U.S. The Oscar-winning director said he will likely even see the latest one starring Daniel Craig as the British operative “again.” Since its initial limited release November 9th, Spielberg’s Lincoln has grossed over $62 million. Over the holiday weekend it played just over 2,000 theaters, grossing over $25 million. The film continues to generate Oscar buzz for the director and its star Daniel Day-Lewis. Latest Skyfall Image: Go Poolside with James Bond

The latest publicity shot to come from the Skyfall set is several steps up from the Banal 007 meme witnessed a while back, though it’s still pretty banal: Daniel Craig, with his back to the lens, sits on the ledge of a pool. At night. Ripped. Part movie photo, part gay-resort brochure. Alas! It’s just James Bond chillin’ at the London Four Seasons. Meanwhile, according to the synopsis accompanying the fist-look photo in Empire , “With Craig and director Sam Mendes promising something on an even bigger and more emotional canvas than ever before, expect great things from Bond 23…” Will do. 15 Suggested Titles for the Next James Bond Movie

It looks like James Bond will return after all ! At least until the next delay. Assuming, though, that MGM can be taken at its word — and assuming we’re all still around and not sucked into the vortex of an apocalypse in 22 months — 007 will arrive at theaters on Nov. 9, 2012 with Daniel Craig reprising his role as James Bond for director Sam Mendes. Hooray! The currently untitled film is going by BOND 23, which would be fine if this were a trendy bar and not a movie franchise. Ahead, Movieline offers some foolproof title suggestions.

Christopher Nolan Wants to Direct James Bond

With the breathless hyperbole surrounding Inception only just beginning, it would surprise exactly no one if a film critic found a way to compare Christopher Nolan’s self-proclaimed dream heist epic to James Bond. Like you couldn’t picture ” Inception is The Matrix mixed with James Bond, oxygen and gold bars!” scrolling across a TV spot next week? But even if Nolan was busy aping the dapper British agent with a license to kill, it seems that his ultimate goal is to direct the dapper British agent with a license to kill. Yes, this is Bond rumor — but for once, it seems legit!

Could the James Bond Delay Actually Be a Good Thing?

We’ve been told over and over for decades that James Bond will return, and implicit in that promise is that in the in-between time won’t be long at all. The turmoil at MGM has changed all that, however; not only has the next Bond film lost Sam Mendes as the director , but now, according to an irate Harry Knowles , development on the movie has stopped completely (not to be confused with when it stopped indefinitely ). Is that really so bad, though?

Bob Denver’s Widow Seems Mildly Bitter About Gilligan’s Island Movie

Among the never-ending cascade of press releases tumbling over the Movieline transom in any given week, only a few call out for a closer look. And fewer still match the urgency of a dispatch received today from Dreama Denver — the widow of Gilligan’s Island star Bob Denver — who has publicly responded to news of classic show’s big-screen adaptation with a recommendation and a complaint.
