Paul Ryan Interview: We Lost Because …

In his first interview since the 2012 election results dealt him a tough defeat, GOP V.P. nominee Paul Ryan admits losing came as something of a surprise. “We thought we had a very good chance of winning,” the 42-year-old said. Paul Ryan Interview “You know, the polling and the data and all the people who are the smart people who watch this stuff — they had a pretty optimistic view on the night.” “So as you can imagine, it was a bit of a shock when we didn’t win.” As soon as the final numbers on Virginia and Ohio began coming in, says Ryan, “we knew,” adding that President Obama won reelection fair and square. “I’ll let the pundits decide exactly how he won,” says the Wisconsin Congressman. “The point is, [President Obama] got more votes than we did. That’s how he won.” “The president deserves kudos for having a fantastic ground game. And the point I’m simply making is, he won. He won fair and square. He got more votes.” “And that’s – that’s the way our system works. And he ought to be congratulated for that.” Other takeaways from Paul Ryan’s interview with ABC News: He says Obama has no mandate because America also reelected the GOP House, including himself, and that the ideas he ran on are popular. The silver lining? More time with his family; he took a short vacation and didn’t even hear about the David Petraeus scandal until days later. He’s not thinking about the 2016 election . Is Diane Sawyer drunk all the time?

Diane Sawyer: Drunk During ABC Election Night Coverage?

It’s unclear if she was just really excited by President Obama’s reelection win last night, but Diane Sawyer appeared drunk on ABC News. We’re talking like full-on wasted here. Slurring words, bobbing, weaving, rambling about the music, waxing philosophical about symbolism in the exclamation point in Obama’s slogan, generally making no sense … you name it. With due respect to Donald Trump’s rant , this was the LOL and WTF performance of the night. Check out these amazing, possibly drunk Diane Sawyer highlights and see for yourself: Diane Sawyer Drunk?

99-Year-Old Oscar Voter Down on Artist, Up on Brad Pitt

Academy Awards ballots are due today at 5 p.m. PT, and procrastinators in the actors’ branch might do well to take note: One of your eldest peers has an upset or two in mind. The Los Angeles Times had a fun set of features over the weekend exploring some of the principals and predilections set to influence this year’s Oscar vote, none more illuminating than this profile of 99-year-old (and still active!) actress Connie Sawyer. In a nutshell: Sure, she’s squarely Team Streep in the Best Actress category. But Sawyer’s preferences in Picture and Actor defy the easy generalization of rank-and-file Academy voters as pliant, disengaged blue-hairs: Sawyer, who was a 15-year-old living in Oakland in 1927, when The Artist ‘s story begins, wasn’t so enamored of the black-and-white film. The movie was enjoyable enough, she says, but she frankly doesn’t understand what all the fuss is about. “Hasn’t anybody seen old films?” Sawyer asked in exasperation. “They’re easy to make and easy to act. All you have to do is overact. I saw a lot of those films in my day.” For lead actor, the category in which The Artist star Jean Dujardin is favored by some, Sawyer picked Brad Pitt for his starring turn as Oakland A’s General Manager Billy Beane in the baseball drama Moneyball . The film, she said, “was the best work he’s done.” Of course, this from a former Oakland girl and a woman who calls the Oscar itself “the most legitimate movie award there is in the whole world.” Ahem . Still! No better time than the present for a second wind among contenders and observers alike. I love you, Connie Sawyer. [ LAT ]

Disney Star Jake T. Austin to Star Opposite Joel Courtney in Tom Sawyer & Huckleberry Finn

Now that he’s done filming the Disney Channel’s Wizards of Waverly Place , star Jake T. Austin can move onto the next logical step: playing one of the greatest literary protagonists of the past 200 years. Austin will play Huck Finn to Super 8 newcomer Joel Courtney’s Tom Sawyer in Tom Sawyer & Huckleberry Finn , which will start shooting in — wait for it — Bulgaria this August. I suppose the material is ready for Disney alum treatment now that its pesky slurs have been eradicated. Should “Nickelodeon” also join the list of banned words? [ Variety ]

REVIEW: Cars 2 Is All Chassis and No Soul

Everyone who’s ever loved a car — a beat-up Plymouth junker, a pristine ’67 Mustang, a Hot Wheels Corvette Stingray, it doesn’t matter — knows that cars have personalities of their own. But one of the nice things about cars is that they generally express their feelings in mechanical, comprehensible terms: The need for an oil change has nothing to do with deep-rooted insecurities. Cars don’t need a lot from us, emotionally speaking.

ABC’s World News Runs White House Produced Pro-ObamaCare Video as ‘News’

Back in 1992, ABC World News Tonight anchor Peter Jennings told viewers his network would skip coverage of “routine” campaign events, unless they actually contributed new information that viewers could use. In an effort to keep ABC from being used as a propaganda arm for politicians, Jennings declared “there will be less attention to staged appearances and sound bites designed exclusively for television.” He later elaborated to the Washington Post’s Howard Kurtz, saying he did not want to be “‘seduced by pictures as we’ve been so easily seduced in the past. I don’t think any of us ever wants to be in the flag factory situation again,’ referring to a 1988 Bush campaign event.” Evidently, times have changed. On Thursday’s World News, ABC anchor Diane Sawyer ran as a “news” item a White House-produced video — complete with schmaltzy background music — of President Obama taking a phone call from a cancer patient who, Sawyer informed viewers “is now able to get health insurance” thanks to ObamaCare. “This is an honor. I want to thank you, so much,” Gail O’Brien told the President. The video is not even new — Sawyer identified it merely as a conversation that took pace “recently,” but “today we got to listen in,” indicating that Thursday was the day the White House chose to drop this out there for sycophantic news networks to plug into their newscasts. For the record, CBS and NBC refused to take the bait (at least on Thursday night’s broadcasts). Here’s the transcript of the brief item, which set up a story about how the new provisions would lead to higher premiums for many customers: DIANE SAWYER: This is the day significant changes in health care insurance go into effect in America. And today we got to listen in on a phone call — President Obama talking recently to Gail O’Brien, a cancer patient in New Hampshire who is now able to get health insurance. PRESIDENT OBAMA [On screen: “White House video,” background music playing]: Hi, Gail? VOICE: Hello. OBAMA: How are you? GAIL O’BRIEN: I’m doing really well, thank you. This is an honor. I want to thank you, so much.
