Race Matters: Black Children’s Educational Expectations Are More Likely To Be Underestimated Than Whites

Dr. Ebbie Parsons III Writes About Learning Expectations In Black Schools Dr. Ebbie Parsons III has made it his personal mission to improve the institution of education and has proudly impacted the lives of more than 100,000 children around the world while delivering unprecedented business results to the organizations in which he has served. The co-founder of Yardstick Learning has recently penned a profoundly eye-opening piece for HuffPo on the educational expectations placed on Black youth vs. white youth in our schools today. The basic point of my argument is that “proficient” is such a low standard that not a single child who scores “proficient” in all areas according to the standards will actually be college or career ready upon matriculation from high school. The expectations are too low for any of these kids to rely on “proficiency” to help them get admitted into a competitive college and there’s nothing about any of these standards that are actually preparing these kids to be career ready for any type of position deemed to be on a “career track” by any American standard. These standards aren’t good enough for White students so why should schools be allowed to tout them as success for low-income Black and Brown students? How many times have you seen schools say that they’ve transformed or turned around a school by getting up to 70% proficient? Or what about the schools that brag that 100% of their kids are proficient? I implore you to peel back the onion to find out what percent of those kids are advanced proficient. And trust me, if that number is less than 10% and they’re touting 100% proficiency then you should know that the school is nothing more than a testing mill preparing kids for standardized assessments. Dr. Parsons goes onto argue that affluent communities (more likely to be disproportionately white) tend to teach analysis, critical thinking and offer more advancement opportunities to their students. Affluent communities try to build critical thinkers who are exposed to a vast array of opportunities and curriculum that explores all of the core content areas with a critical eye. They’re not teaching rote memorization of a standard so that kids can do well on an assessment. They’re teaching kids to actually “get it”. Many of them may even have fewer students that score proficient but nearly all of the students who are proficient actually score “advanced proficient” on an assessment because they have a firm understanding of the material. We must choose our children’s education “eyes wide open” and understand when the wool is being pulled over our eyes. The institutional racism that is “proficient” only continues to keep Black and Brown children from ever experiencing the real American dream. We need to understand the standards in order to challenge the standards. This is our responsibility as this determines our future! Do you think the standard is set too low for many students in Black communities so that their skill set leaves them in a position to just be “proficient” or far below their white peers??

Selena Gomez Apparently Braless of the Day

Apparently, Selena Gomez isn’t wearing a bra in these pics… I can’t tell if she’s wearing a bra or not, you see I just assume no one wears bras these days, they aren’t in style, especially when they have small breast implants, because their tits end up with built in bras…but I guess girls are so programmed by society or their family or their moms or their schools…to wear bras…that when they don’t wear bras they make a big deal out of it, talk about it like it’s a thing, in some exodus you’d think was comparable to the slaves being emancipated…when normal girls start exploring this world…usually when over 25, because under 25 grew up on porn and those girls are fine walking around with their assholes exposed…thank god for that… The post Selena Gomez Apparently Braless of the Day appeared first on DrunkenStepfather .

Vince Vaughn Wants Guns in Schools

Vince Vaughn is taking aim at the national gun control debate. The actor, who will play a central role on True Detective Season 2 this summer, has opened up to the latest edition of British GQ, making it very clear where he stands on the second amendment and school safety. “You think the politicians that run my country and your country don’t have guns in the schools their kids go to? They do,” Vaughn said. By that logic, he argues, shouldn’t all kids be afforded the same protection? “I support people having a gun in public full stop, not just in your home,” he continues. “We don’t have the right to bear arms because of burglars; we have the right to bear arms to resist the supreme power of a corrupt and abusive government.” Although no one out there is trying to ban guns as a whole, Vaughn still claims the concept is a non-sensical one: “Banning guns is like banning forks in an attempt to stop making people fat. Taking away guns, taking away drugs, the booze, it won’t rid the world of criminality.” In closing, the actor blames the outbreak of school massacres directly on the fact that there are policies against allowing guns on campuses: “In all of our schools it is illegal to have guns on campus, so again and again these guys go and shoot up these f-cking schools because they know there are no guns there. “They are monsters killing six-year-olds.” On that latter point, no one can disagree. But where do you stand on the rest of Vaughn’s argument?

Ho Sit Down! Mike Huckabee Calls School Shooting ‘No Surprise…We’ve ‘Systematically Removed God’ From Schools’

Whatever happened to just offering your condolences ?? According to The Huffington Post : Former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee (R) weighed in on the massacre at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn. on Friday, saying the crime was no surprise because we have “systematically removed God” from public schools. “We ask why there is violence in our schools, but we have systematically removed God from our schools,” Huckabee said on Fox News. “Should we be so surprised that schools would become a place of carnage?” This line of reasoning isn’t new for Huckabee. Speaking about a mass shooting in Aurora, Colo. over the summer, the former GOP presidential candidate claimed that such violent episodes were a function of a nation suffering from the removal of religion from the public sphere. “We don’t have a crime problem, a gun problem or even a violence problem. What we have is a sin problem,” Huckabee said on Fox News. “And since we’ve ordered God out of our schools, and communities, the military and public conversations, you know we really shouldn’t act so surprised … when all hell breaks loose.” How about we put more money in to our health system and mental care instead of pointing fingers and blaming religion? WTF?!?!?! Chicago Schools Are Bribing Parents With Gift Cards To Stay Involved??

Is it wrong to give parents a $25 gift card to Walgreens if they show up for parent-teacher conferences and pick-up report cards??? Sounds jacked up to us! According to The Huffington Post , it’s already happening in 70 public schools around Chi-town as a ‘pilot program partnership’ between the schools and Walgreens… Parents have long debated whether or not it’s healthy to bribe kids to do things like finish their homework on time or eat all of their vegetables. But what happens when the tables are turned and parents are the ones being bribed to cooperate? Chicago, Ill. is considering doing just that. As part of a pilot program launched at 70 public schools, Chicago parents will be given $25 Walgreens “Balance Rewards” cards in exchange for picking up their child’s report cards and attending parent-teacher conferences, according to a press release from the city. The program is being viewed as a way to incentivize parents to stay more involved in their children’s academic lives. All of the schools selected to participate have had continual difficulty engaging parents. The public-private partnership appears to be a win-win for both the schools and for Walgreens, which just launched its first loyalty card in an attempt to attract shoppers with discounts, the Chicago Tribune reports. With over 150 stores in Chicago alone, Walgreen’s CEO Greg Wasson said he only hopes that the pilot program will expand to more schools. Mayor Rahm Emanuel, who thought up the program, told the Chicago Sun-Times that he envisions the program will close some of the communication gaps that now exist between many public school students and their parents. The city’s schools plan to track and analyze the data to see how effective it is in promoting parent-teacher involvement. Chicago public schools, in particular, seem to be struggling to find ways to increase student success rates. In 2011, less than 24 percent of Chicago public school graduates were prepared for a four-year college program, according to the Tribune. In response to skepticism of Emmanuel’s program, the mayor’s office released a statement from Beth Swanson, deputy chief of staff for education, that said: “This is about our educators and CPS leadership working to be innovative and creative in order to increase parent involvement in their child’s education, period.” It’s pretty damn sad if they feel parents have to be bribed. And Rahm just made the whole city look foolish. Spend that partnership money on cleaning up your schools so they can pass code before you start this mess…SMH. What do you think about all this nonsense?? Images via shutterstock/facebook

Small Town Ohio Schools Excel In The Midst Of Hard Times Kids in the small but close-knit family town of Warren, Ohio are proving that it’s more than possible to make the grade and stay in school, even in the midst of the hardest of times. The city,   which saw a slew of killings , lay-offs and all out negativity this summer, finally has a reason to celebrate….and the kids to thank. via Tribune Chronicle Although data released by the Ohio Department of Education remains preliminary, Warren City Schools have reason to celebrate. After several years of being on Academic Watch, Warren appears to have climbed to Continuous Improvement based on its 2011-12 Ohio State Report Card. “We’ve worked hard and it shows in our improvement,” said Melissa Watson, teaching and learning director at Warren. “We have an idea where we are and where we need to focus. We’ll continue working hard, improving and moving forward.” Based on the 2011-12 data, of Trumbull County’s other 19 public school districts, 11 rated Excellent, four rated Effective and four earned Excellent with Distinction. During the last few weeks, ODE employees have worked diligently to upload and verify remaining data for school improvement purposes,” explained Michael L. Sawyers, Acting Superintendent of Public Instruction. “As we wait for additional information related to the investigation by the Auditor of State, ODE remains committed to sharing existing data so that students, parents, educators and the public can be informed about the progress of our schools.” Congratulations to these kids and this school system for a job well done.
