Bolitics: Should President Barack Obama Choose A SCOTUS Successor Following Justice Antonin Scalia’s Death?

President Obama To Choose Successor Following Justice Antonin Scalia’s Death Conservative Court Justice Antonin Scalia , who voted against Obamacare, same-sex gay marriage and said affirmative action sends black students to schools “too advanced” for them, has peacefully passed away at age 79 while in Texas. Now, Republicans are trying to stall President Obama right to pick a new successor as soon as possible according to CNN reports: Within two hours of Scalia’s death being reported, presidential candidates along with Republican and Democratic leaders on Capitol Hill were feuding over whether Obama should appoint a replacement for the eloquent and outspoken Scalia or wait for the next administration to make a decision. The battle lines underscored the huge political stakes in the 2016 election, which could cement the ideological balance of the court for years to come. Obama said Saturday he would nominate a successor “in due time,” but Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell insisted the next administration should make the appointment. “The American people should have a voice in the selection of their next Supreme Court Justice,” the Kentucky Republican said. “Therefore, this vacancy should not be filled until we have a new President.” But Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid issued a scathing statement, previewing the heated fight ahead. “The President can and should send the Senate a nominee right away,” Reid said. “With so many important issues pending before the Supreme Court, the Senate has a responsibility to fill vacancies as soon as possible. It would be unprecedented in recent history for the Supreme Court to go a year with a vacant seat. Failing to fill this vacancy would be a shameful abdication of one of the Senate’s most essential Constitutional responsibilities.” News of Scalia’s death broke hours before the latest Republican presidential debate and added another explosive element to a heated GOP primary campaign. Even before Saturday, the fate of the Supreme Court was already a key election issue, given the possibility that the next President could get the chance to nominate at least two or three Justices due to the age of those on the bench and the possible shift of the ideological balance of the court. Bogus Bolitics: GOP Goon Likens President Obama’s Ability To Override Republican Minority To Black Slavery

You mad? GOP Senator Likens Limited Authority Of Senate Minority To Slavery The Republicans have whining their complaints about how less-than-pleased they are with President Obama’s latest judicial and executive nominees, but one GOP Senator took it too far when he recently compared their lack of power to reject the nominations to slavery in the 1800s. via Think Progress Sen. Mike Johanns (R-NE), joining a parade of Republican Senators angry that a minority of Senators can no longer obstruct President Obama’s judicial and executive nominees, took to the Senate floor Friday to compare his caucus’ plight to that of abolitionists in the 1800s — a comparison that probably would have shocked abolitionists from the 1800s. Indeed, for much of the Nineteenth Century, the Senate’s anti-majoritarian design played a crucial role in thwarting efforts by abolitionists to eliminate the South’s “peculiar institution.” He had this to say: They can appoint the entire judiciary of the United States in the District Courts and in the Circuit Courts with absolutely no involvement whatsoever from the minority. None. That’s what their rule change did. Let me take that rule change and think out loud about where we put ourselves as a country. I wonder who was the first United States Senator in our history who came to the floor and said, “My fellow Senators, I have thought about this, I have contemplated it, maybe I have even prayed about it. And I believe the day has arrived to end slavery in the United States. And I will be attaching an amendment to every bill to end that horrific practice. All the havoc that the shady GOP has wreaked for the duration of President Obama’s time in office and they have the nerve to whine about not getting their way and liken it to slavery? These douche bags just don’t quit. SMH!

You Can’t Be Serious!! Boehner Tells Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid To “Go F— Yourself”!!!

This guy isn’t scared of nothin’! Via Politico … House Speaker John Boehner couldn’t hold back when he spotted Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid in the White House lobby last Friday. It was only a few days before the nation would go over the fiscal cliff, no bipartisan agreement was in sight, and Reid had just publicly accused Boehner of running a “dictatorship” in the House and caring more about holding onto his gavel than striking a deal. “Go f— yourself,” Boehner sniped as he pointed his finger at Reid, according to multiple sources present. Reid, a bit startled, replied: “What are you talking about?” Boehner repeated: “Go f— yourself.” The harsh exchange just a few steps from the Oval Office — which Boehner later bragged about to fellow Republicans — was only one episode in nearly two months of high-stakes negotiations laced with distrust, miscommunication, false starts and yelling matches as Washington struggled to ward off $500 billion in tax hikes and spending cuts. The White House and Congress knew of the self-imposed deadline for more than 17 months and they still blew past it, as a president fresh off a strong reelection victory tested — and ultimately broke — the Republican Party’s fidelity to its tax-cuts-only governing philosophy. It took a late intervention of two Senate veterans — Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and Vice President Joe Biden — to rescue the negotiations. Their relationship, forged over two decades on Capitol Hill, helped move Congress to a resolution because it wasn’t burdened by the raw political conflicts of the past and the legislative fights still to come. But even those longtime Washington hands couldn’t prevent a New Year’s Day drama in the House. Boehner weathered a revolt against the bill, which played out during two meetings in the Capitol basement in which his fellow GOP lawmakers lashed out at having to accept the measure without spending cuts. After hours of uncertainty — even insults against “sleep-deprived octogenarians” from the Senate who passed the bill in the dead of night — the House gave final approval to the deal, 257-167. It was carried by 172 Democrats and 85 Republicans. And it exposed another split: Boehner voted yes, but his top deputies, Majority Leader Eric Cantor of Virginia and Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy of California, voted no. We don’t think anyone’s too happy with the ‘deal’ these fools made…SMH. Images via facebook

Sofia Vergara and Nick Loeb: Brawling Over Her Ex on New Year’s Eve?

Sofia Vergara and fiance Nick Loeb were reportedly involved in a scuffle early Tuesday at Miami nightclub Story, which is owned by Sofia’s former flame Chris Paciello. According to Page Six , things got heated and Sofia’s dress was ripped … and not in a hot way like you’re envisioning (see Sofia Vergara bikini photos , dudes). “Nick seemed tense around Chris, who was hosting them in the VIP section, even though he and Sofia are just friends,” the insider told the New York Post . “In the early hours, Nick and Sofia were arguing before he got into a dispute with somebody at a neighboring table. Some pushing and shoving started .” “Sofia stepped in to try to calm the situation, but somehow ended up getting pushed and shoved. Her strapless dress was torn or pulled down in the melee.” The source says this inadvertently “exposed her cleavage in front of other people and her son Manolo, who was so offended … [he] left the club. It was crazy.” Sounds it. The source said that security guards dragged Nick Loeb , who got engaged to Vergara in July, “out of the VIP section and threw him out of the club.” The Modern Family star followed. Another insider told the newspaper that “things got pretty heated, but [Sofia] was never hit … Nick was pretty bruised from struggling with security.” “None of the drama was Sofia’s fault, but despite the big scene [Nick] created, they made up outside the club, and she took him back to their hotel.” All’s well that ends well?

Russell Crowe Responds to Les Miserables Criticism

Russell Crowe may have ruined Les Miserables for some, but at least the actor isn’t shying away from the criticism. In light of Adam Lambart lambasting the cast vocals last week – Tweeting how the “score suffered massively with great actors PRETENDING to be singers” – the Oscar winner has now responded. And you may be surprised by Crowe’s retort. After a follower sent him Lambert’s critique, Crowe took to Twitter and… mostly agreed with the former American Idol finalist. “I don’t disagree with Adam, sure it could have been sweetened,” Crowe wrote. “[ Les Miserables director Tom] Hooper wanted it raw and real, that’s how it is.” Fair enough, those also irritating enough according to many. Donald Trump Slams GOP Over Fiscal Cliff Deal

Worst. Negotiators. Ever. Donald Trump is slamming the GOP over the fiscal cliff deal that lawmakers reached in the last 48 hours, saying Republicans “may be the worst negotiators in history.” The real estate mogul’s harsh words concerned the last-minute compromise reached by V.P. Joe Biden and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY). The U.S. Senate passed legislation to avert the fiscal cliff – a series of tax increases and budget cuts set to take place January 1 – on New Year’s Eve. The U.S. House passed the bill less than 24 hours later, despite the objections of about 150 Republican members who felt their side gave away too much. Trump, a Republican who’s not shy about criticizing Democrats or President Barack Obama, said “Republicans got nothing” in the fiscal cliff deal. Is that really accurate, though? Under the new agreement: Taxes will rise only for individuals making over $400,000 and couples making over $450,000, with the top rate increasing from 35 to 39.6%. Itemized deductions would be capped for those making $250,000 ($300,000 for couples). Taxes on inherited estates will go up to 40 percent from 35 percent. Capital gains tax rates will increase from 15 to 20 percent. Unemployment insurance would be extended for a year for 2 million people. The alternative minimum tax will be adjusted for inflation. While the first tax increases in many years are significant, the rates and tiers are under the threshold sought by President Obama in nearly all cases. With the support of the public and Congress, GOP leverage was minimized; also, there are further, more significant negotiations on the horizon. The deal does not address the federal spending cuts now set to take effect March 1, nor the long-range entitlement reform debate raging in Congress. Also, the delay was likely caused at least in part by House Speaker John Boehner’s effort to appease the conservative wing of his party and keep his job. All of this logic seems to be lost on the Donald … not that we’re surprised.

Matthews: McConnell Should Be Man of the Year – Time Picks Bad People Like Hitler

Chris Matthews on Friday said Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell should be Time magazine's Man of the Year for engineering a “disgusting strategy” that forced Obama to the left and made the President look like a socialist. “Time magazine’s picked people pretty awful,” claimed the “Hardball” host. “I’m not mentioning their names…Hitler” (video follows with transcript and commentary):

Open Thread: Sen. Murkowski Concedes to Palin-backed Joe Miller

And so concludes the most recent chapter in one of Alaska’s most epic political rivalries – Palin vs. the Murkowskis. More importantly, Joe Miller is an anti-establishment candidate in every sense of the word. He poses a threat even to the GOP’s congressional leadership, as Tim Carney noted : The Alaska result is above all a blow to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell. As with the primary defeat of Utah’s Bob Bennett in the spring, challenger Joe Miller’s likely win replaces a close McConnell confidant with an unaccommodating conservative… Murkowski was one of McConnell’s rising stars. He tapped her for his inner circle in her first term, and she also got a spot on the Appropriations Committee. The darling of Alaska’s former senior senator, Ted Stevens, Murkowski rocketed through the ranks. This year, she was elected secretary of the Senate Republican Conference, one of the top six leadership roles. After Stevens lost re-election in 2008, McConnell took her under his wing. “Lisa is the new powerhouse in Alaska,” he told Roll Call. “She will fill the vacuum left by Ted.” Is Miller’s anti-establishment approach a boon for a GOP seeking to rebrand itself, or a dangerous means to divide the party?

Obama’s many victories defined 2009

.It's hard to find a positive word in the lie factories as of late. We hear more about gate crashing and acorns than we do about the many triumphs of #44. But if anything can be said about the Obama era, it is off to a powerful start.
