Jussie Smollett Assault Case: Arrests Have Been Made

We have a significant update in what has become one of the more bizarre stories we’ve seen in awhile. And that update is this: Two men have been arrested in conjunction with Empire actor Jussie Smollett getting savagely beaten in Chicago last month. According to TMZ, a pair of brothers from Nigeria named Olabinjo and Abimbola Osundairo have been taken into custody by the Chicago police department. They have been labeled “potential suspects” in this beating, as opposed to mere “persons of interests,” which is a key distinction. As previously reported on The Hollywood Gossip and via other outlets, the siblings were picked up at O’Hare Airport on Wednesday night and subsequent had their home raided. Police reportedly found shoes, a laptop and other possible pieces of evidence there that may link them to the Smollett investigation. But here’s where it gets interesting and sort of troubling… Smollett had previously told the cops that his attackers were white. He claimed they screamed that he was in “MAGA Country” at the time of the incident, while also screaming racial and anti-gay epithets in his direction. Now… is it possible that two African-Americans could have uttered these words? Sure. Anything is possible. But the brothers had also previously worked as extras on Empire. Their attorney has confirmed to a CBS affiliate in Chicago that they knew Smollett pretty well. Now… is it possible they therefore knew where he lived and knew his whereabouts on the night of the alleged attack? Sure. However, there’s been rather serious talk that Smollett actually staged this assault and both the skin color of these suspects – and their connection to the actor definitely gives us reason to consider this theory. View Slideshow: Jussie Smollett: Did He REALLY Stage His Own Attack?! Empire Star Under Investigation [UPDATED] Why would Smollett do such a thing? We really don’t wish to speculate too much on such a sensitive and seemingly wild/horrible possibility, but the ABC affiliate in Chicago alleges that he was about to be written off Empire. Presumably, turning himself into a victim of a hate crime that received national attention would have made Smollett into far too much of a sympathetic figure for producers to follow through with this plan. 20th Century Fox Television and Fox Entertainment, however, released a statement in response to the rumor that Smollett was being fired, dismissing the rumor out of hand: The idea that Jussie Smollett has been, or would be, written off EMPIRE is patently ridiculous. He remains a core player on this very successful series and we continue to stand by him. To review, Smollett has claimed two men verbally berated him with racist and homophobic slurs early in the morning of January 29. He says they poured a substance, believed to be bleach all over him; and tied a rope around his neck. Speaking to Good Morning America on Thursday after the beating, Smollett challenged his critics and insisted he’s telling the truth. “I’m pissed off,” he told Robin Roberts early in their chat, citing the criticism he’s received from doubters of the attack. “They called me a f—-t, they called me a n–ga. There’s no which way you cut it,” Smollett said, adding: “I’ve heard that it was a date gone bad, which I also resent that narrative. I’m not gonna go out and get a tuna sandwich and a salad to meet somebody. That’s ridiculous. And it’s offensive.” As for why he waited a short while before calling the police to report what happened? He cited the idea of “pride” and explained: “We live in a society where, as a gay man, you are considered somehow, to be weak, and I’m not weak. I am not weak. And we, as a people, are not weak.” Watch excerpts from the interview below as we try to make sense of this confusing and disturing ordeal all around. Jussie Smollett Speaks on Horrific Attack

Amber Portwood: Officially Out of Teen Mom OG?!

Teen Mom OG has gone through so many changes recently. Sometimes it barely even seems like the show we've watched for years now. Farrah Abraham and Ryan Edwards both left, and Bristol Palin and Cheyenne Floyd joined the cast. Gone are the days of keeping up with those four girls from the first season of 16 and Pregnant. Like, Sarah Palin was featured on the last season. That's how weird things have gotten. But as bizarre as things are now on our beloved reality show, things might be getting even worse by the time the next season rolls around. Because Amber Portwood really might be quitting. 1. Oh, Honey … Amber had a very, very hard time last season. Worse than usual, even. 2. On the Bright Side … Sure, she wasn’t high out of her mind like she was in the old days, and she didn’t commit any felonies on camera, either. 3. Yay? Actually, now that she’s with Andrew and they share precious little baby James, she’s really seemed to calm down a lot. 4. Uh Oh No, Amber’s most recent issues have been very different: she’s been suffering from postpartum depression. 5. Mental Health That’s on top of her previously diagnosed bipolar disorder and borderline personality disorder. 6. Fair Enough As you can imagine, she was in a really bad place. View Slideshow

Jussie Smollett is Lying About Attack, Neighbors Actually Allege

Jussie Smollett was violently and brutally attacked by two men on the streets of Chicago early on the morning of January 29. Or was he , a bunch of very dumb and cruel and cynical people are now asking?!? As you’ve very likely heard about and/or read all about by now, the Empire star was harassed by a pair of assailants late last month on his way home from getting a late-night snack. These individuals allegedly screamed homophobic and racist epithets at the actor, prior to tying a rope around his neck and dumping bleach all over him. It was the epitome of a hate crime. It was a modern-day lynching. It was truly horrible. And yet… despite police confirming the assault… and despite Smollett certainly having no reason to lie about such a thing… a handful of people out there somehow don’t believe this heinous incident actually took place. “I don’t believe it happened the way he said it did,” said Agin Muhammad, who lives in the same high-rise near the Navy Pier as Smollett. On what is he basing this strong allegation? “I’ve been in this neighborhood five years. I don’t believe it, not around here … Half the people are gay and the other half are black,”  Muhammad explained to Page Six . Elsewhere, a patron at Lizzie McNeill’s Irish Pub – located approximately a block from the scene of the alleged assault – said Smollett’s story “doesn’t really make sense,” expounding as follows: “It’s a lie, because Chicago is the most liberal city around,” said this unnamed man. “They have cameras everywhere … Why can’t they find the attack?” This is quite the take. For starters, there is surveillance footage (below) of two men spotted right around the time and right around the place Smollett says he was attacked. Secondly, yes, Hillary Clinton won Cook County (which includes Chicago) with 75% of the vote in the 2016 Presidential campaign. That’s a huge margin of victory over Donald Trump. But it still means 25% of residents voted to Make America Great Again, making it mathmatically very plausible that two of those people screamed that Smollett is in “MAGA Country” while they pummelled him, which is what the actor has claimed. Smollett will soon start filming episodes of Empire once again, while he returned to the stage for a live singing performance just days after the incident. “I am not fully healed yet, but I’m going to, and I’m gonna stand strong with ya’ll,” the actor/singer said during a concert at the Troubadour club on the Sunset Strip. He added at the time: “I had to be here tonight, y’all. I couldn’t let those motherf-ckers win. So I will always stand for love. “I will never stand for anything other than that. Regardless of what anyone else says, I will only stand for love and I hope that you all stand with me.” Elsewhere, Smollett has been asked to turn over his phone records to the police because he has said he was on the phone with his manager at the time of his assault. Authorities therefore consider these records important evidence for the case. However, TMZ reports that Smollett has responded by turning over a redacted PDF of his phone bill. And police have requested the full , actual phone bill — or a download of Jussie’s phone; they say a PDF can be manipulated and cannot be used as any sort of evidence. “We have no reason to doubt the statements, but for a criminal investigation, we need to independently confirm the phone records,” Chicago police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi says. As for those who are casting doubt on Smollet’s story? His spokesperson says the following: Jussie is the victim here, which has been slated by the Superintendent of Police. Jussie has voluntarily provided his phone records from within an hour of the attack and given multiple statements to police. Chicago PD has repeatedly informed us that they find Jussie’s account of what happened that night consistent and credible. Superintendent Johnson has been clear from day one that Jussie is a victim. We are continuing to work closely with the Chicago PD and remain confident that they will find Jussie’s attackers and bring them to justice.

Jussie Smollett Praised for Recovery, Attitude After Horrific Beating

This week, Jussie Smollett returned to work on Empire after surviving a brutal hate crime beating. The creators and showrunners of the hit television series are praising his strength and attitude. Here is what they had to say about Jussie’s recovery. Empire executive producer and showrunner Brett Mahoney spoke at the Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour in Los Angeles. Mahoney spoke to Fox News about Jussie Smollett’s recovery from the brutal and bigoted attack that he endured. “He’s doing well,” Mahoney praises. “I think again, he spoke at the Troubadour during his performance on Saturday,” he notes. So, Mahoney explains, “you know he’s getting better and he will be.” “He’s not there yet,” he admits. “But he’ll back to his old self because he’s strong and you can’t diminish his spirit.” Mahoney refers to Jussie’s statement over the weekend , affirming that he will stand strong in the face of hate. “Let me start by saying that I’m OK,” Jussie affirmed to his fans. “My body is strong but my soul is stronger,” he assured the audience. “More importantly I want to say thank you.” The numerous declarations  of love and support for Jussie has been a heartwarming thing to behold. Jussie gushed: “The outpouring of love and support from my village has meant more than I will ever be able to truly put into words.” Words can really be uplifting, even when someone is frightened, angry, and hurting. He did address a more negative side of the coverage of him and the vicious attack that he endured. “Despite my frustrations and deep concern with certain inaccuracies and misrepresentations that have been spread,” he began. He concluded: “I still believe that justice will be served.” Conspiracy theorists immediately latched onto his story, not wanting it to be true. Though police released photos of the two suspected assailants , some have falsely claimed that there’s no footage of them anywhere. The truth is that the beating of a black gay man by assailants who referred to “MAGA country” makes a lot of people uncomfortable. It would be more politically convenient for some of Jussie had somehow managed to attack himself . Mahoney had more to say about Jussie and the brutal attack that he endured. “The attack on Jussie, because he is such a beloved member of our family – hurt us all very hard,” Mahoney continued. “But, Jussie is a proud gay black man,” he affirmed. “And I don’t know whether the cowards who attacked him were trying to beat the gay, the black, or the pride out of him,” Mahoney admitted. “But that’s impossible because he’s strong,” he noted. “So,” Mahoney concluded. “We’re happy that he is back at work and he’s happy to be back at work.” Danny Strong, co-creator of Empire, voiced similar sentiments. “Anything you want to know about Jussie,” Strong said. “You can see from his statement when he performed on Saturday night. He noted that Jussie had come out “with a statement of defiance for what happened to him.” “And,” Strong continued. “A statement of love.” Very true. Strong went on to mention that Jussie has always had this underlying strength. “And he’s truly a very special person,” Strong said. “Which is how he got cast as Jamal.” This wasy, he explained, “because we needed someone who was special to play that part, and it was him.” “So,” Strong concluded. “I’m not surprised at all by the class and the poise of his response to what’s happened.” It’s good that, at the very least, Jussie is surrounded by a powerful and caring support system. FBI Reportedly Working Closely With The Cast And Crew Of ‘Empire’ After Attack On Jussie Smollett

Read the rest here:

T he investigation is still ongoing concerning the homophobic and racist attack on Jussie Smollett   on Jan. 29. The FBI is reportedly working closely with cast and crew on the set of “Empire,” specifically to track down who sent Smollett a death threat before the attack, according to TMZ. See Also: Mike Pence Has The Unchristian Nerve To Compare Trump To Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. “Sources on set tell us a private security company was hired by the show and met with FBI agents to establish a protocol for inspecting all incoming mail,”  TMZ reported. “We’re told the team wears gloves so the evidence in question is not contaminated.” The security team is there “to flag threatening, incoming mail and alert the FBI, and to possibly link new items to the letter Jussie already received, containing homophobic and racists epithets along with an image of a noose.” “Empire” has consistently received racist and homophobic hate mail, but now everyone is on high alert and the FBI is screening all incoming mail. On Jan. 29, while walking to a Subway in Chicago, two men reportedly yelled racial and homophobic slurs at the actor after he exited a restaurant, investigators told The Hollywood Reporter . They allegedly punched and poured bleach on him while one of the suspects put a rope around his neck. As they fled the scene, Smollett told police they said, “This is MAGA country.” Nine days before, threatening letters were directed at Smollett, reportedly sent to Fox Studios in Chicago. The cutout letters said, “You will die black f**.” See below: “Jussie Smollett You will die black fag” Okay, I'm ready to fight. pic.twitter.com/h42Px47lvW — ℝ

Jussie Smollett Performs, Refuses to Let "Motherf-ckers" Win

Jussie Smollett took to the stage on Saturday night for the first time since he was savagely assaulted just days before . And he had something to say before launching into his set. “I am not fully healed yet, but I’m going to, and I’m gonna stand strong with ya’ll,” the actor/singer said during a concert at the Troubadour club on the Sunset Strip. Referencing the heinous attack, Smollett added: “I had to be here tonight, y’all. I couldn’t let those motherf-ckers win. So I will always stand for love. “I will never stand for anything other than that. Regardless of what anyone else says, I will only stand for love and I hope that you all stand with me.” Smollett was taken by surprise by two assailants around 2 a.m. last Tuesday on his way back from Subway. These attackers tied a rope around his neck and poured bleach all over him, committing an obvious hate crime against someone who is African-American and openly gay. Speaking to the audience last night, Smollett actually clarified a few details around the incident. He said that he was driven to see a doctor but was not hospitalized… suffered bruises but did not break any ribs…and was cleared by his physicians to perform this weekend. “And above all, I fought the f-ck back,” he said, drawing loud cheers. “I’m the gay Tupac.” Folks all over Hollywood have sent Smollett their best wishes, while President Donald Trump did not address the alleged fact that the suspects screamed to Smollett that he’s in “MAGA country.” But the Commander-in-Chief did say the following about the attack on the Empire star: “That I can tell you is horrible. I’ve seen it. Last night. It’s horrible. Doesn’t get worse.” View Slideshow: Jussie Smollett Attacked: Everything We Know So Far Before Smollett began his set yesterday, his siblings Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Jazz Smollett, Jake Smollett, Jocqui Smollett and the eldest, Joel Smollett Jr., took the stage. Said Joel to the crowd: “Jussie is a true artist, that’s how he breathes. “But above all else, above all else, he is the epitome of love. “So on behalf of the Smollett family, we are so proud of our brother and we are here tonight with all of you to give him confidence, the highest praise and unyielding support as he shares his music, his soul and his love to make this world a better place and not to concede to hate.” Jussie then came out and hugged his relatives. The day before Smollett broke his silence about the hate crime . He said via statement: My body is strong but my soul is stronger. More importantly I want to say thank you. The outpouring of love and support from my village has meant more than I will ever be able to truly put into words. Despite my frustrations and deep concern with certain inaccuracies and misrepresentations that have been spread, I still believe that justice will be served. I am not and should not be looked upon as an isolated incident. We will talk soon and I will address all details of this horrific incident, but I need a moment to process. Most importantly, during times of trauma, grief and pain, there is still a responsibility to lead with love. It’s all I know. And that can’t be kicked out of me. Sharon Carpenter Tells BOSSIP What It’s Like To Work On Empire Set Television reporter Sharon Carpenter moved from journalism to primetime, making her acting debut on tonight’s Empire. Carpenter’s character is host of the fictional show “Sippin’ The Tea,” and lands an interview with Jamal Lyon, played by Jussie Smollett. “We are presenting Jussie to the world as a bonafide star for the first time,” Carpenter explained. “He’s reached that level of stardom. He reveals some things that he never said before, and it could end dramatically.” Lee Daniels handpicked the former Revolt reporter for the scene with Smollett, which was shot in a day last summer at Empire’s soundstage in Chicago. Carpenter, whose new website, Wiretapped, covers all aspects of pop culture, said her nerves kicked in once Empire co-star Taraji P. Henson arrived to watch her film. “I started to get a little nervous, but everyone made me feel comfortable,” she said. “I think they’ve realized what the secret is, taking the pressure off and saying kind and supportive words. Once you take that pressure off, it makes people more comfortable to perform.”
