Angry Environmentalists Greet G20 Economic Summit in Toronto (Slideshow)

On June 26 and 27, Canada hosted G20 , the billion dollar party designed to show the country at its best — G20 leaders from around the world expected to find a clean, peaceful city laid out to welcome them, before sitting down to discuss the issues of finance and the economies. Unfortunately, the vision everyone will remember is that of the torched police cars. Find more of the images scorched into the memory of anyone watching this weekend here:

Italy Installing More Solar Power in Two Months Than California Does in a Year

photo: teesha dunn via flickr We already knew that Italy was the world’s second-largest solar power market in 2009 (the United States was fourth, by the way), but according to a new piece in Wind-works Italy is installing more solar power in two months than California does in a year. By the end of this year they are expected to have one and… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Urge New York State Legislators to Pass Solar Jobs Act

photo: © Big Sue LLC NYC and New York State may not be the first places that come to mind when you think of states leading in solar energy but pending landmark legislation in Albany hopes to change that. The New York Solar Industry Development and Jobs Act of 2010 (S.7093a/A.11004) “aka the Solar Jobs Act”, provides a policy roadmap for jumpstarting solar industry and the economy in New York. The legislation requires each New York retail electric supplier, the New York Power Authority (NYPA), and the Long Island Power Auth… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Unplugged: Organic and Affordable Solar Power

The Millennium Technology Prize trophy, named “Peak,” features a silicon tip. Back in 1991, Professor Michael Graetzel from the Lausanne Polytechnic invented what’s now called the Graetzel Cell , a non-photovoltaic solar cell made of a layer of titanium dioxide, glass and a dye from fruit that absorbs sunlight like the chlorophyll in green leaves. The Swiss professor has since continued deve… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Can a Tiny Weatherproof Solar Light Bulb Replace Kerosene Lights?

Image via Nokero One small solar lightbulb is looking to be the solution to replace billions of polluting kerosene lamps. According to the Nokero Solar Light Bulb manufacturers, over 1.6 billion people still use fuel-burning devices to get illumination, most of that in the form of kerosene. Fuel lanterns emit 190 million tons of carbon dioxide into the air each year. Yet this little bulb with four small solar panels attached purportedly provides five times the light of kerosene lamps while using 1/200th the energy consumption. It could be a very interest… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Solar Panels Fatally Attractive to Aquatic Insects

Photo: Flickr , CC “Like going to the most amazing 3D movie you’ve ever seen and you can’t leave” A new study discovered that solar panels are apparently mesmerizing to certain types of insects (mostly aquatic). What happens is that solar panels reflect light in a way that is similar to how water reflects light, and this fools the insects, attracting them to the panels. “It’s like these organisms become dazzled to death,” said Bruce Robertson of Michigan State University’s W.K. Kellogg Biological Station in Hickory Corners who l… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Luna Ring: A Giant Solar Power Plant on the Moon

Image: Shimizu One of These Days, Alice. Bang! Zoom! Straight to the Moon! Big problems need big solutions, and the Shimizu corporation in Japan certainly can’t be blamed for thinking small. It has made plans to provide enough clean energy to all of humanity by turning the moon into a kind of anti-Death Star, a giant solar power station that brings life instead of death. It might sound like complete science-fiction now, but who knows what will be possible in a 100 years ( if we ma… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Fox News: "We Can’t Trust BP" (Video)

Obama has just wrapped up a press conference affirming his administration’s leadership role in the BP Gulf spill response. Calls have been mounting from all over for the federal government to step up its authority, as BP has been called out as untrustworthy by environmentalists, concerned locals, and even Fox News. Yes, you might think that the conservative network would back Tea Party star Rand Paul, who said that Obama was being too harsh on BP — but as this video attests, the anchors at Fox are incensed:… Read the full story on TreeHugger
