A s the deep freeze sweeps several parts of the country, concerns surrounding the homeless population have been heightened. Temperatures have reached dangerously cold levels and many are worried about how those living on the streets will stay warm. A Chicago woman has taken matters into her own hands. According to CBS Chicago , Candice Payne rented hotel rooms this week so that the city’s homeless residents could have shelter in the cold weather. Candice Payne's selfless act spurred a group to rent 60 hotel rooms to keep homeless people off the streets of Chicago during the historic cold. “Maybe they didn’t know how to or where to start to help, so I’m glad that I was able to be that vehicle.” https://t.co/m7s5WVjgaC pic.twitter.com/Nip4kI8bKh — CBS Chicago (@cbschicago) February 1, 2019 Payne was motivated to step in and help men and women in need after she learned that a propane tank where many homeless people stayed in a cluster of tents had exploded, the news outlet writes. That tank was one of the only sources of heat for the community. Payne decided to step in and rented 20 rooms on her credit card so that individuals without homes would have a place to stay during the frigid temperatures. After posts about her efforts to help the homeless circulated on social media, other individuals volunteered to help. People rented out additional hotel rooms, and donated food, water, and clothes. With the support of volunteers, there has been a total of 60 rooms rented. Nearly 100 people have been accommodated for three-night stays. Payne is happy that she was able to make an impact. “Maybe they didn’t know how to or where to start to help, so I’m glad that I was able to be that vehicle,” she told the news outlet. The individuals that she has helped are thankful for all that Payne has done. “We don’t get that type of help,” one of the people staying at the hotel said. “I really needed them at that point, so they came right in time.” She and the volunteers are working towards creating more of a lasting solution for the city’s homeless population. Efforts like the one she has led are needed. According to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development , in 2017 there were 554,000 homeless people in the United States and 193,000 of those individuals were living on the streets and didn’t have access to shelters. He explains why he is opening up in a new magazine feature. As spotted on Complex the New Orleans Native covers the February edition of GQ . As part of the yearly music issue he provides some context behind some of his most recent moves specifically making his Instagram account public back in November . Being that the “Novacane” crooner is uber private this was a pretty big deal. “I feel like there was dissonance between how I was seen by the audience and where I was actually, so that contributed to the decision to make my Instagram public, for sure,” he explained. “But there’s also the idea of dialogue and discourse and conversation—like theater where the audience can interrupt you versus the television.” When asked to provide examples of the perceived disconnect he pointed to his overall public perception that in his mind couldn’t be farther from reality. “That dissonance—the word being a big container for what I was feeling…the way I was seen was not even close to correct. It’s still not correct, either.” He also details how moving to New York City is going. “I like it a lot because I spend more time at the house. I think it comes from living in hotels, but when I’m in L.A., I find myself in my car a lot.… Which is stress. Source: Thomas Barwick / Getty Science Could Be Giving Us A Pill That Prevents Weight Gain Soon, we might all be able to take a pill that will let you scarf down your favorite foods without gaining any weight. SIGN. ME. UP. According to the people over at Science Daily , this pill is meant to affect the RCAN1 gene. In a study on mice, when the gene was turned off, animals could gorge on fatty foods without gaining any calories in their body. “We know a lot of people struggle to lose weight or even control their weight for a number of different reasons,” the study’s lead researcher Professor Damien Keating explained. “The findings in this study could mean developing a pill which would target the function of RCAN1 and may result in weight loss.” Removing the RCAN1 both increased the mice’s metabolism and expended the calories as heat instead of storing them. This process works for the mice to not gain weight because it turns white fat (fat that’s stored) into brown fat (fat that’s burned as heat). The original findings of Keating’s study were published in EMBO Reports . “Mice deficient for RCAN1 have an elevated metabolic rate and are resistant to diet‐induced obesity,” the report said. “Removing RCAN1 had two major effects,” Keating said. “It reduced the storage of fat in dangerous areas around the belly, for example. And then in muscle it actually [caused] muscles to burn more calories at rest.” As of now, scientists including Keating will continue to explore options for creating a pill like this for humans, so, unfortunately, we’re not out of the woods just yet. “The ideal would be to take some sort of pill that didn’t require you to watch your diet, that didn’t require you to exercise,” Keating said. “Now, that might seem like a pipe dream, but the findings that we have out of this mouse study at least indicate a novel pathway that we might be able to target.” Now we just need a time machine to jump to whatever year we actually have this pill…

W hen NFL star Marshawn Lynch isn’t on the football field, he’s focused on giving back to those in need. His latest philanthropic project will provide the homeless population in Oakland and Seattle with smartphones, AfroTech reported. Through the project, 3,000 homeless people on the West Coast will receive smartphones and three months of free service. Each phone will come equipped with the Beast Mobile app which allows users to receive credits for playing games, participating in surveys and watching videos. Beast Mobile and Fam1st Family Foundation launched this project in efforts to examine the habits and whereabouts of individuals who are homeless so that they can better serve that population. They also hope that through this project those who receive the phones will be able to stay in touch with their loved ones and access the internet for resources. “There is a myth out there that homeless people already get phones from the Government. To qualify for a phone you must already receive some type of assistance like food stamps or Medicare/Medicaid. Also you need to have a home address which homeless people do not have,” read the initiative’s website . “With Seattle having the 3rd largest homeless population in the U.S. and Oakland (and the Bay Area) having the 4th largest, Beast Mobile and Fam1st Family Foundation are committed to providing a solution to help city officials communicate with this previously untrackable demographic.” Phones for the Homeless is currently working towards raising $250,000 to provide individuals with three months of free service. Bright Corporation has pledged to donate 3,000 phones. Homelessness has been a pressing issue in our country. A recent study revealed that Black Americans are about three times more likely to live on the streets than white Americans. G iven the African-American experience with the infamous Tuskegee experiment , it’s worrisome that the risks associated with consent-free experiments are not fairly spread out by race. See Also: Blacks Underrepresented In ‘Life And Death’ Clinical Research, Study Finds A study released on Monday found that African Americans are enrolled in clinical trials that don’t require patient consent at a disproportionately high rate, Stat News reported. This involves administering experimental emergency medical procedures and drugs on patients who often can’t give consent because they’re unable to respond to questions. The Food and Drug Administration permits researchers to conduct these treatments under certain guidelines. The study , published in Health Affairs, found that 29 percent of the patients involved in these experiments are Black, although African Americans represent about 13 percent of the population. African Americans are overrepresented in many clinical trials that don't require informed consent. One study published in June , found that doctors have long used inaccurate guidelines to determine cardiovascular risks, which was particularly the case with at-risk African-Americans patients. A significant part of the problem with the guidelines was that Blacks were underrepresented in the patient sample used to create the guidelines. News about consent-free experiments comes against the backdrop of government experiments, from 1932 to 1972, on African-American sharecroppers in Tuskegee, Alabama. Researchers deceived Black men about receiving treatment for syphilis, which actually went untreated. The experiments have contributed to widespread distrust in the African-American community of medical experiments—especially without consent. The new study also revealed that many researchers who conduct consent-free experiments use a loophole to avoid publishing certain demographic data about the people they test. Government reporting regulations don’t specify which data they must reveal. This only adds to the lack of transparency and distrust.
