According to the groundbreaking study , the first modern Britons, who lived more than 10,000 years ago, had blue eyes and “dark to black” skin. People with White British ancestry would be a descendent of Cheddar Man’s population. A whole documentary on the subject called First Brit: Secrets of the 10,000 Year Old Man is set to air on Britain’s Channel 4 on February 18. He also supported H.R. 40 , a measure to Study Reparation Proposals for the African-Americans Act, that has been introduced since 1989 by Rep. John Conyers , who recently retired in the widening sexual assault scandal. Under the proposal, Congress examined slavery, its lasting effects, ramifications on future generations, and how the United States should address the issue. He also warned a panel on ABC’s This Week about President Donald Trump, when few people saw it coming. Indeed, Ellison seems poised to take up the mantle of the civil rights movement where Conyers left off. G entrification in the nation’s capital continues to displace more of the city’s longtime African-American residents, as the Black population in the District of Columbia has fallen below 50 percent for the first time in decades. The average net worth of a White household is $284,000 compared to just $3,500 for Black households. There’s also a huge gap in median annual incomes: Whites at $120,000 and Blacks at $41,000. That’s not surprising because half of the new jobs in the district’s economy require at least a bachelor’s degree. Only 12 percent of Blacks in the city were college graduates in 2014, the study noted. Consequently, White residents can pay more for houses and apartments, which is driving up costs and reducing available affordable housing. Many of these inequalities stem from a history of discrimination that pushed the district’s Black residents to the fringes of the economy, the study said. Historic discriminatory practices range from segregated schools to redlining, in which banks refused to lend money to Black entrepreneurs and home buyers. Creating opportunities for Black-owned businesses is one key solution. The report urges the D.C. Chamber of Commerce and city agencies to build a database of minority businesses and do more to help them thrive. Local universities can also play a role by offering courses on business development. Stevie J Is Going To Jail Over $1.1 Million Unpaid Child Support Case Stevie J is headed to jail next week! We EXCLUSIVELY reported back in May that the “Love & Hip Hop Atlanta” star – who was born Steven Jordan was battling a seven figure sum in back support for his son, now 18, and daughter, 17. According to court papers obtained by BOSSIP, Stevie was supposed to pay $8,557 a month for the kids, and as of 2014, owed $1,107,412. The reality star had unsuccessfully tried to apply for “deferred prosecution,” where he’d essentially get off in exchange for him agreeing to certain terms from the government. But lawyers for the feds revealed that the government rejected Stevie’s request, and a judge scheduled it for trial in December. And Stevie J said he was none too pleased with the news. “It went how it went,” he told BOSSIP. “I got some things up my sleeve too. Georgetown University To Offer Preferred Admissions Status To Descendants Of Slaves Georgetown University is attempting to reconcile their horrific past of slavery by offering apologies, memorials and even preferred admissions status to descendants of slaves according to NY Times: Georgetown’s president, John J. DeGioia, who announced the measures in a speech on Thursday afternoon, said he would offer a formal apology, create an institute for the study of slavery and erect a public memorial to the slaves whose labor benefited the institution, including those who were sold in 1838 to help keep the university afloat. In addition, two campus buildings will be renamed — one for an enslaved African-American man and the other for an African-American educator who belonged to a Catholic religious order. Dr. DeGioia’s decision to offer an advantage in admissions to descendants, similar to that offered to the children and grandchildren of alumni, is unprecedented, historians say. The preference will be offered to the descendants of all the slaves whose labor benefited Georgetown, not just the men, women and children sold in 1838. The 1838 sale, worth about $3.3 million in today’s dollars, was organized by two of Georgetown’s early presidents, both Jesuits. A portion of the profit, about $500,000, was used to help pay off Georgetown’s debts at a time when the college was struggling financially. The slaves were uprooted from the Maryland plantations and shipped to estates in Louisiana. Dr. DeGioia said he planned to apologize for the wrongs of the past “within the framework of the Catholic tradition,” by offering what he described as a Mass of reconciliation in partnership with the Jesuit leadership in the United States and the Archdiocese of Washington.
Study Predicts That It Would Take Black Families 228 Years To Catch Up With White Wealth Today A new study predicts that in the future , the wage gap between White Americans and Minorities continues to grow larger as opposed to getting better– and it would take 228 years for black families to acquire the wealth of white families today. Via The Nation If current economic trends continue, the average black household will need 228 years to accumulate as much wealth as their white counterparts hold today. For the average Latino family, it will take 84 years. Absent significant policy interventions, or a seismic change in the American economy, people of color will never close the gap. Those are the key findings of a new study of the racial wealth-gap released this week by the Institute for Policy Studies (IPS) and the Corporation For Economic Development (CFED). They looked at trends in household wealth from 1983 to 2013—a 30-year period that captured the rise of Reaganomics, expanded international trade and two major financial crashes fueled by bubbles in the tech sector and housing prices. The authors found that the average wealth of white households increased by 84 percent during those three decades, three times the gains African-American families saw and 1.2 times the rate of growth for Latino families. To put that in perspective, the wealthiest Americans—members of the Forbes 400 list—saw their net worths increase by 736 percent during that period, on average. If those trends persist for another 30 years, the average white family’s net worth will grow by $18,000 per year, but black and Hispanic households would only see theirs grow by $750 and $2,250 per year, respectively.
